Checking length
- Paste your content in the text box and see the results appear in six boxes on screen.
The basics
Almost every piece of writing you do has a number attached to it, and the number usually lives somewhere else. Your title tag has about 60 characters before Google trims it. Your meta description has around 160. A word counter counts all of these and shows how close you are to each limit.
A word counter breaks a piece of text down into countable parts: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, and an estimate of how long it takes to read. You paste, and the numbers appear. That's the simple description, but the reason people keep one open in a browser tab is a bit more practical.
The Rext AI word counter gives you six counts for free: words, characters, characters without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and reading time.
How it works
From anywhere like Google Docs, Word, a CMS editor, Notion, an email draft.
All six points update instantly. Length, words, characters without spaces for hard limits, sentences and paragraphs for structure.
A nine-minute read is reasonable for a detailed guide. It's far too long for a product description and roughly double what most newsletter audiences will sit through. Match the estimate to where the piece is going.
Over your limit? Cut adverbs, hedging phrases, and any sentence that restates the one before it. Those three passes shorten the text without losing a single idea.

Features
Words, characters, characters without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, and reading time, all updating as you type.
The numbers move with you, like you can watch a sentence push you over a limit while you're still writing it.
Paste from Docs, Word, or a CMS and the formatting is stripped automatically.
Based on 200 words per minute.
Total sentences, characters, words, and reading time appear on screen for your guidance.
Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored. Unpublished drafts and confidential client work stay on your machine.
Paste 200 words or 20,000. It's free, and there's no limit.
No, because Google has said directly that word count isn't a ranking factor. Longer pages often rank well on competitive queries because complex topics need space to cover properly, not because length itself helps. Coverage matters; padding doesn't.
Word count divided by reading speed, defaulting to 200 words per minute; that's a common average for adult readers of general-interest material. Dense or technical writing reads more slowly, so treat the figure as an estimate.
Any sequence of characters separated by whitespace. Hyphenated terms like "e-commerce" count as one. Numbers count as words. So does standalone punctuation, such as a lone dash.
Usually because of how whitespace and line breaks are treated. That's why this tool shows both "Characters" and "No Spaces", most platform limits use one or the other, and the gap between them can be significant.
