Hello, I'm queer-scribbling, and you may call me Briar.
You can use they/their/theirs/themself pronouns for me, but don't be alarmed if other pronouns are experimented with in the future.
I'm currently a mod in the Pillowfort Snowflake Challenge community, 'Mod Briar' for the Gender Exploration Carnival, and I'm a back-up mod for the Pillowfort Fandom Calendar community.
While I've been a fannish person for years, I only got around to creating a Dreamwidth account in December 2023 in order to help out with the 2024 round of Fandom Snowflake Challenge. My archive will back-date posts from Pillowfort and various Tumblr blogs (including a Wordle sideblog), but it's not going to offend me if most people aren't interested in all that. It's likely that you, hypothetical reader, are stopping by because of the Fandom Snowflake Challenge, and you want to get an idea of what fannish things you might encounter here.

PBS Shows - 'Bookish' & 'The Gold'
Saturday, 7 March 2026 05:30 pmI don't want to lose this reply from the tv_talk community, but I also never tried to do episode by episode recaps because I didn't feel like I was engaging with the shows in question enough to warrant that. I have run into some people who bounced off 'Bookish' when they found out Mark Gatiss is the main lead, Mr Book. 'The Gold' ran on PBS Masterpiece in my viewing area in October and November 2025; 'Bookish' ran in January and February 2026.
"Also tried out Bookish on PBS. Not sure I'll stick with it. It seemed to have all the elements of a good story but was just dull somehow, despite its cast."
My family likes the intro, but we were kinda Eh on the season.
However, the reveal was personally underwhelming. Jack seemed to have really grown attached to his assumption that Mrs Book might have been his mother awfully quickly, but also, he seemed to be written as the weird one who showed a glimmer of 1940s era homophobia that Mr Book and Jack's biological father were lovers. I know Jack wasn't getting the same info as the audience, but it just seemed like a moment where the Books had a 'what a shame that some people are so small-minded' reaction as an appeal to modern viewers instead of carefully broaching the subject before the big reveal so they wouldn't have been so shocked at how Jack reacted. Was Mr Book worried that Jack might tell someone? Eh, not the point, we jumped forward a few weeks, and Jack never said anything while stuck in the 'I just don't understand' stage.
"Also tried out The Gold [...]. It seems promising."
My family gave it a try because The Gold was on after something else we were already watching on PBS that night. Some of my family was technically alive for the initial Brink's-Mat robbery and ensuing trials (without paying much attention to it), but we were all mostly entertained without knowing much about the actual trials to lead us in certain directions. In some ways, it felt like a large neon sign called 1980s UK Classism 😬.

Contains spoilers.
On the one hand, it fits with other PBS murder solving shows in that each case only took up two episodes at a time [while watching live; streaming might combine them], so it's not like we felt it got too convoluted by juggling too many cases that were all solved in the end. On the other hand, the interaction between Mr Book, Mrs Book, and Jack between the cases was more okay than actively drawing us into the 'what is The Secret here' plotline. (Mr Book is written as a bit of an eccentric secondhand book seller, so we were expecting a certain amount of 'Mr Book will dramatically reveal his niche knowledge to solve the case at the end'.) Mr Book and Mrs Book are in an open lavender marriage, and I feel like I ought to like the element of what we see with companionship (Mr Book reading to Mrs Book in bed) and the separate bedrooms as a queerplatonic element. However, the reveal was personally underwhelming. I came across one of the thousands of reblogs of this post on Tumblr sharing a screenshot of the explanation of Metazooa. The Tumblr OP roughly describes it as phylogenetic Wordle, and you get 20 guess to figure out a species. For today, 3 March 2026, I didn't get the answer.
Guess 1 - elephant (Amniota). Guess 2 - crocodile (Archosauria). Then... Birds. I got Neoaves (egret), Telluraves (barn owl), Australaves (falcon), a bunch of wrong answers (Passeroidea, Turdidae, Corvidae), and I ran out of guesses within Passeriforms. The answer was: Swallow.
I didn't want to get trapped amongst the birds again, so I tried raven as my first guess. The common ancestor is Sauria. Sea turtle? That's with raven under Archelosauria, so nope. Rattle snake gets us to Serpentes. Boa constrictor gets us to Henophidia. Burmese python gets us to Pythonidae, and there's not very many pythons in the database [you don't get a species to select when you type it in if it's not in the database]. The answer is green tree python.

All Creatures Great & Small (S6)
Sunday, 1 February 2026 05:30 pmI've tried very hard to not pay much attention to someone who follows along with the UK airings on my Tumblr dash, which means it's finally time for the US airing of season six.
Each episode's recap will go in the comments below, and like last year, I'll probably update the posting date later so this won't get lost amidst the Fandom Snowflake Challenge posts.

Fandom Snowflake Challenge
Thursday, 29 January 2026 01:00 pmChallenge #15: How did the Fandom Snowflake Challenge go? Did you get all you wanted to get from it? Are there things you're going to carry with you for as long as you can? Are you going to continue to challenge yourself? Continue to connect? We can't wait to hear.*takes off mod hat*
As a participant, I completed more challenges this year than the past few years, so it feels a bit like I interacted more. If I hadn't had so many days off from work due to inclement weather, I think I would have finished fewer responses, and I do appreciate those on DW who stop by to leave comments on my DW cross-posts. Overall, I think Fandom Snowflake Challenge went okay.
Next year... Hm. I always feel a bit like I need to complete at least a few challenges since I'm a mod, but we'll just see what January 2027 is like. If we don't get any winter storms, I may have to live with having less free time to complete my own challenge responses. I have wondered if doing a hitching post after a round of Fandom Snowflake Challenge would be interesting, but I wouldn't want people to feel left out if one of their posts weren't mentioned.

Switching to Linux
Friday, 23 January 2026 03:35 pmMy attempt at Linux Minut XFCE basically went exactly the same as trying to install Linux Mint Cinnamon did, and I still need zero point one more GB of space to install Linux Mint XFCE on my laptop. Kinda my bad for not seeing that coming; apparently, if I can't handle the general amount for a Linux Mint install, I can't handle either Cinnamon or XFCE versions.
*pulls out ☕ to mull this over*
Not gonna lie, I don't really get how my available GB is being determined here. Is the installer trying to fit the Linux OS alongside my Windows OS? I'm supposedly using 48 GB out of 58 GB. I guess I don't really have to understand how I only have 16 GB for this install, but it does make it feel like I'm just guessing about finding a different distro.
Instead of constantly checking the about section for my device, I'm just copying some info over here:
So... If I should err on the side of caution and stick to 16 GB of storage, what Linux distros can I install?
[Post-installation update: My guesstimate in the comments is that the current LTS version of Lubuntu is probably using a smidge under 10 GB, which isn't half bad. I just wish I wouldn't have had to go through the installation process itself in order to find that out. Part of the reason that I chose Lubuntu is that it does clearly state in its documentation that you can easily upgrade to the next current LTS release, not unlike updating with Windows, instead of having to do a new series install as with Linux Lite.]
(Update-slash-Note: I'm a little fascinated trying to piece together what's going on with the one developer based on forum posts, but I think the idea of trying to have A.I. Support has been abandoned on the website in favor of a wiki. I'm not currently seeing any further updates about offering A.I. Services in the Shop in order to help fund Linux Lite in the forum, but the shop link is generating a 404 page, as of January 2026.)

An expansion from the comments of the PF post:
I wasn't at the point in the Linux Mint installer where I was given the chance to delete Windows when I was getting the lack of space message -- I chose my language, got the screen for connecting to a wifi network, and then I just get a screen informing me that I only have 16 GB when I need 16.1 GB. I haven't actually gotten a screen where I should tell the installer to replace Windows.Instead of constantly checking the about section for my device, I'm just copying some info over here:
- Processor: Intel Celeron N4000 CPU @ 1.10 GHz
- Installed RAM: 3.81 usable GB out of 4 GB (1 out of 1 slots)
- Graphics Card: Intel UHD Graphics 600 (512 MB)
- Storage: 58 GB SSD
- System Type: 64-bit operating system
So... If I should err on the side of caution and stick to 16 GB of storage, what Linux distros can I install?
Bodhi Linux
I can meet the recommended system requirements for Bodhi Linux - 64-bit, 1.0 GHz processor, 768 MB of RAM, 10 GB of drive space. I think the Standard Release of 7 would probably be the one I'd consider, though I'm not sure if it's close enough to the release of 8 that I should wait a bit for that.Lubuntu
I've run into a lot of mentions of Lubuntu, but it feels less than helpful to run into "we will no longer provide minimum system requirements" ('Taking a new direction'). I would probably expect less than the amounts listed for Ubuntu 24 on Ask Ubuntu, but all I'm seeing for specifically Lubuntu 24 is - 64-bit processor, at least 4 GB of RAM. If I look into this more, I should keep in mind Long Term Support (LTS releases) and consider LTS 24 - Noble Numbat instead of the Quokka one.[Post-installation update: My guesstimate in the comments is that the current LTS version of Lubuntu is probably using a smidge under 10 GB, which isn't half bad. Linux Lite
I do keep running into Linux Lite in compilations of lighter Linux distros to try, but the minimum SSD requirement is 40 GB. Without really understanding why I've been told by the Linux Minut installer that I only have 16 GB to work with, I don't know if I would be able to access more of my listed SSD amount above. Upgrade note: I have an old laptop with a version of Linux Lite on it, and I stopped using it when I hit the end of the current series and needed to face a new install for the next series. You can call it Windows induced laziness, but I definitely prefer the ability to easily hit an update button and just move on with the next release.(Update-slash-Note: I'm a little fascinated trying to piece together what's going on with the one developer based on forum posts, but I think the idea of trying to have A.I. Zorin Lite
I've seen the Lite version of Zorin OS mentioned as well, but I'm just not feeling very enthusiastic about that when the Lite version will be sunset in the reasonably near future. Support until June 2029 isn't nothing, but like, I'd just be prolonging getting the Core version, which I'm on the cusp of not meeting the system requirements for in 2026 (15 GB for Core). Waiting until 2028 or 2029 to opt for the Core version probably won't help me out here.Originally posted on Pillowfort on 23 January 2026 and cross-posted to Dreamwidth on 25 January 2026.

Fandom Snowflake Challenge
Wednesday, 21 January 2026 05:30 pmChallenge #11: Grant someone's wish from Challenge #5.I didn't get around to granting a wish from the Wish List challenge. I looked at several, and then I realised: 1) I didn't have a way to send people money for the physical items they had individually linked to outside of gift buying lists, 2) I just couldn't afford the whole price of some of the physical items on gift buying lists, 3) I can't really create fanart for any of the 'I welcome fanart of my characters' wishes, and 4) I didn't have a way to fulfill the intangible wishes (f'ex, I'm not looking for a beta for any of my fics).
It's not anyone's fault, really. Their wishes were their wishes.
However, it did make me think a bit, especially when it came to physical item wishes. Should someone who only asks for physical items have to also share a way to either donate money or send the bought gift to them? Or would not sharing that info indicate that they're just sharing 'I wish I could have this' items without expecting anyone to buy them? Is there a gift list platform that would be better for Fandom Snowflake Challenge participants to use for creating physical item gift lists? (I imagine more people would consider using a platform if, at the very least, the buyer and recipient wouldn't have to trade actual addresses.)
I'm aware that some people probably expect anyone wishing to buy a wish list item to just leave a comment saying so, so they could work it out with the intended giftee. Still. I'm here to overthink.

Monday, 19 January 2026 11:15 amI was going to try to connect this to the trope challenge and talk about 'Grumpy x Sunshine' in Watson (TV 2025), but I ran out of steam on that. (I was going to call Ingrid the Grumpy to Sasha's Sunshine.)Challenge #10: Big Mood (Board)
Choose something you love and create a mini mood collection of three (or more) items that evoke your feelings about it. You don't have to limit yourself to visual media or collect the items into a special format like a square (though you can if you'd like).
Things that remind me of Ingrid Derian:
~ Any variety of a You Have Been Poisoned Tea Cup
She'd probably call this juvenile and make a disparaging comment about Hot Topic. It might depend on if this was connected back to the Season 1 finale, in which case it would be more gallows humor than anything.
~ A t-shirt labelled with 'Brat'
Season 2 reference to her passing comment about calling her lover Daddy last night. I'm having trouble finding an image that isn't lime green right now, but I think she'd do better with the temporary labelling of a t-shirt.
~ A Neurologist Appreciation Mug
Ingrid's humor is more along the lines of Shit I Want To Say At Work But Can't Desk Calendar, but I think her strong attachment to the gifted desk trophy (second-hand bowling trophy from Goodwill, if I remember correctly) would mean that she'd like an appreciation mug. Even if it was only used at her home or something.

Switching to Linux
Thursday, 15 January 2026 06:35 pmI keep finding myself too busy to switch my main laptop to a Linux option, and Windows 10 ended support *mumble mumble* months ago. (I don't have enough space for Windows 11, and I'm not feeling very enthusiastic about what I've heard about it.) This weekend is when I need to make the switch. Right now, I'm thinking of Linux Mint (probably Cinnamon).
If there isn't a comment from me that I finally made the switch by Sunday, someone can leave something in the comments as a nudge.

Thursday, 15 January 2026 05:30 pmChallenge #8: Talk about your creative process. As mentioned in the comments on the DW Icebreaker entry, I'm in a fallow period between active creation. So, this post is going to go through the process of cross-posting someone's post about a fandom event to the Pillowfort Fandom Calendar community.
There's really not much different in cross-posting from a Tumblr post or the Dreamwidth Fandom Calendar community. Sometimes, I need to figure out which event has the closest sign-up deadline or submission deadline if I have several from the DW comm I need to cross-post, but that's usually not going to impact this process much. Pillowfort is more of a slower platform; people don't check in every hour, sometimes not even every day. This means that I usually pass on an event post if there's less than 24 hours to sign-up, but I might put that info in a draft to see if it happens in a future round.
Example: Soulmates 5 is the oldest post in the DW Fandom Calendar comm that I need to cross-post, but it does not have deadlines for claiming prompts or filling prompts. The closest sign-up deadline is for Casefic Exchange.
Check the PF community to see if this event has been cross-posted there before.
Events aren't exclusively picked or prioritized if they've shown up before. It can just be easier to copy and paste from a previous post, such as Casefic Exchange. Then, I double check that rules haven't changed, update the schedule, update the links, update any tags, and it's a faster cross-post.
In a post draft for the PF community: I usually try to fill in tags first.
See: my tagging process post. That should already tell me if the event is multi-fandom or for a specific fandom, what kind of event it is, what type of fanworks are accepted, when sign-ups are, the submission deadline, and if any other tags should be added.
Example: A post for 5 Soulmates would get tagged: multifandom, prompt fest, format: fic, fic, no signups, no deadline, open prompts, 5 Soulmates.
For the body of the post, I usually try to have three sections: Description, Schedule, and Links.
Description:
I'll probably open up any links to a rules post, AO3 profile, or a Dreamwidth community to help with filling in each section. The description often doesn't change a lot from whatever event post I originally came across, but looking at the rules can provide more info.-- Is the event only for those age 18 and over?
-- Does the event allow more fanwork types than the initial description might suggest? For example, 5 Soulmates was "created with fic in mind, but if you feel you can do art for your prompts, a clean sketch or outline is fine too", so the tags would need to be updated - format: fic and art, fic, art.
-- What are the minimums and maximums for entries?
-- Is this an event where you're required to comment or face being banned from future rounds?
- Example: 5 Soulmates is a multi-fandom prompt table event that's focused on the theme of soulmates. Soulmates in this event can be romantic or platonic. Fic and visual art are accepted. Minimums: a complete and new story of at least 100 words for fic, or a clean sketch or outline for art.
Since there's a posting template for the Dreamwidth Fandom Calendar community, most people tend to hit on roughly the same info. I usually have to do some more rearranging and trimming from, say, Tumblr posts. I rarely copy over images, I usually get rid of emoji, I remove capslock, and I try to reduce banter and humor, especially if it seems fandom-specific.
Schedule:
This can be a sentence within a paragraph for some events that just have posting dates, but some events need a bullet point list. There's no definite template here. Some events have prompt claiming without sign-ups, or I split some layered schedules for big bangs into a writer schedule and an artist schedule. I usually skip temporary closures for mods to clean up nomination tags, especially if the full event schedule lists that out and it's only a day.
Links:
If I haven't already, I open up and double check the hyperlinks provided in the DW Fandom Calendar post or the DW community's rules post go the post or AO3 collection they're supposed to go to. I usually try to include:-- Any applicable Rules or FAQ post, or an AO3 profile if that's been filled out with rules or answered questions.
-- AO3 collection. Sometimes a SquidgeWorld Archive collection.
-- Accounts for the event: Carrd, Discord, Dreamwidth, Tumblr, or any other provided pages by the event mods.
Also: Some events have specific sign-up posts with info, nomination guidelines, provide a prompt list, or give an email address to send questions. For cross-platform events, I usually try to note if there's a preferred method of contacting the mods (such as an event that only wants Tumblr asks). If it turns out that an event is Dreamwidth exclusive, I do also make a point of giving that heads up.
I know it seems like extraneous information when there's date info automatically in the top header of a post on Pillowfort, but I specify the date that I'm posting at the bottom of my PF Fandom Calendar posts and I try to indicate where in the schedule the post is. Example: The Casefic Exchange post notes that I posted during sign-ups.

Tuesday, 13 January 2026 05:30 pmChallenge #7: List three (or more) things you like about yourself. They don't have to be your favorite things, just things that you think are good. Feel free to expand as much or as little as you want. This has absolutely been a hard challenge to try to write a response for. For every possible thing I can think of, I can think of an exception or how I fall short of that thing. So, two out of three will have to do.
1. In certain areas of my life, I have an okay tolerance for the uncertainty and challenge of trying new things.
I know I padded this one out a bit here, but I do feel like I need to have some clarification. I am not entirely comfortable with all kinds of change and trying all the things all the time. However, I've tried out F-Droid on my cellphone, I've tried switching to LibreOffice, I tried out the DuckDuckGo browser for a bit, and I'm currently using up a lot of change tolerance trying out a Linux distro instead of upgrading to Windows 11.
2. If it's within my ability to do so, I try to help people.
I used to enjoy donating blood when I was younger, in part, because it was a visceral way to help people. I tracked down some state resource info for someone on Pillowfort one winter because I had the time to poke around the website. I try to pass along the info for Radio Free Monday or do anonymous submissions. I'm definitely one of those people who have to stop and think about whether someone wants to commiserate or wants help solving a problem.

Sunday, 11 January 2026 05:30 pmChallenge #6: Top Ten Challenge. The category or categories you choose are up to you.I want this post to be done more than I want to hit a designated number, so this is a top six.
Top Six Hobbies (I've heard about recently) With Fan Art Potential
1. Needle Felting
You stab wool with a needle, and there's blending and layering stuff that happens to make a thing. ~so-i-did-this-thing needle felted Vonolel, a pet ret from the show, for his Siegfried Farnon cosplay. Fascinating to see the reblog chain play out on that.2. Diamond Painting
I must confess that I originally thought there was paint brush and paint type of painting involved in this, but it turns out that this is a cousin of paint-by-number kits, except you get little colored resin diamonds to place. Depending on the site you order a kit from, you may be able to find characters or celebrities to choose from, or you usually have an option to custom order an image. (People usually use their own photos of family and pets, so some listings will focus on that with examples of what images to upload.)3. Bookbinding
AKA create your own book. Since I'm usually in fannish spaces, it's more specifically fanbinding, which is turning a piece of fannish writing into a book. I like seeing whatever crosses my Tumblr dash, but I've never been brave enough to try it. (What on earth would I fanbind? It seems like a lot of things to acquire. Our printer has been unhappy for long enough that we usually go to the library for printing things. Granted, there's no-glue pamphlets...)4. Thanks to ~Kalium's Challenge 12 post, I've found out that polymer clay sculpture is a thing. (An unexpected benefit to letting entries simmer on the back-burner a bit.)
5. Miniatures
Please imagine there's a question mark hanging over this one. A random Tumblr post showing someone making very tiny books for a character I didn't recognise in a little library in a box scene crossed my dash the other day. I don't know enough about this to really know what to google here, but with the amount of Warhammer and TTRPG suggestions I'm running into, there's definitely more than one fandom involved in this area of fan crafts.6. Amigurumi
I mentally associate this with crochet, but I think one can also use knitting to create stuffed yarn creations. I'm not sure if ~dailypokemoncrochet is specifically doing amigurumi [they're documenting freehanding crochet at least], but there are lots of results if you google for amigurumi patterns and a franchise (DC, Marvel, KPop Demon Hunters, etc.). It's the sort of thing that's nice to watch other people make, but I'd probably only ever try as a gift for someone I really knew wanted the end result (especially if I have to learn how to crochet in the process).Originally posted on Pillowfort on 12 January 2026 and revealed on 27 January 2026.

However, I put off doing this challenge long enough that it's finally time for the challenge where people try to grant wishes >.>
Wish 1: Advice
Does anyone have any experience with biodegradable pens? Or any recommendations? I'm looking for something more environmentally friendly for colleagues and customers to take since I'm guessing most people will just toss them into the trash later. (Ideally, I'd like the pens to be retractable and use black or blue ink.)
Wish 2: Rec
I am open to trying out a few podcast recommendations. I'm more in the mood for fiction than non-fiction, but other than that, I'm leaving this pretty open right now. (I haven't listened to enough podcasts to get a sense for what I don't like.)
Wish 3: Pillowfort Related
Pillowfort is coming up on its ten year anniversary in April 2026. Glancing in the Pillowfest Planning community would be nice. (The Pillowfort Anniversary Festival community will have more in April.)

I'm not counting visiting my own page on Dreamwidth or Pillowfort for challenge entries, so I think that leaves my last page as visiting a page about superwash wool.
(I've been thinking of knitting a relative something out of superwash wool yarn. It's not happening right now, obviously, but I've been thinking of something like a hooded cowl.)

Saturday, 3 January 2026 05:30 pmChallenge #2: Pets of Fandom: Loosely defined! Post about your pets, pets from your canon, anything you want!I feel like I ought to have something light and fun: Bluebell the dog actor for Betty on 'Will Trent' is a beloved fan favorite, all the animals included in 'All Creatures Great & Small', or how fans fix the lackluster onscreen care of Sunshine the budgie from 'Prodigal Son'.
However, I'm not feeling very light and fun with this prompt. In 2025, my cat had to be euthanized. Probably about the point in November where I stopped doing recaps of 'Fire Country' actually. I did a lot of explaining with offline friends in the aftermath, but more or less, we think she did the cat-typical thing of hiding a health issue until it was suddenly too late. She wasn't a young cat, but that didn't make it any less unexpected.
I used a character as a vessel for some private catharsis (imagining them losing a pet), but I very much needed that to remain private. (There's no definitive proof, but it's not unlikely that a relative's insistence on sneaking our cat table scraps contributed to her burgeoning health issues. The signs of discomfort that we did pick up on and brought up to our vet were incorrectly attributed to arthritis, and I had to get that initial guilt and anger out somewhere that wasn't going to be seen by other people.)
I don't have an optimistic ending, but I know we'll get through this. Humans have been making it through this type of situation for thousands of years.

Fandom Snowflake Challenge
Friday, 2 January 2026 02:30 pmChallenge #1: The Icebreaker Challenge: Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it.
Well, I'm the person who went from just cross-posting Snowflake Challenge posts in order to not lose them being shared on Pillowfort to officially being a PF Snowflake Challenge mod.
It seems un-fun, but I feel like I'm taking part out of a sense of duty. I imagine some people have a negative association with that word, but I don't mind. A cyclical dependency where I have to interact with people I may not voluntarily seek out isn't the end of the world. Sometimes it feels a little awkward when I'm worried I'm bothering people I don't really know, but I think most people are aware that the mods have to go through and comment so it's not totally unexpected.
I've never really thought of myself as gaining something from taking part in this every year. I suppose I feel like I maintain a little connection to broader fannish activity since it's the Fandom Snowflake Challenge. I haven't really created any fanworks in a while, but this is a chance to be a non-creator contributing to a fandom experience.
