A colony was established near Galesburg, Illinois, and was named Bishop Hill. There, Jansson ruled with unlimited power over more than 1,200 followers. However, dissatisfaction soon arose when the promised benefits failed to materialize and the economy was managed in a substandard manner. Jansson was murdered in 1850 by the former follower John Root. Today, his city remains out on the prairie, a cultural monument, and 160 Swedish descendants live among the memories.
