Episode #463: 'Phantom of the Paradise' [Listener Pick 2026!]

As a MaxFunDrive milestone goal, we set the challenge that if we got enough new/upgrading/joining supporters of Maximum Film!, one of those folks would get to pick a movie for us to do an episode on. Well, thanks to supporters like Molly, we hit that goal, and this episode is the result: PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE (one of Molly's faves) is a 1974 rock musical fantasmagoria from early in writer/director Brian DePalma's career. It's box-office flop-turned cult classic. And it is heavily reliant on the dubious cultural power of songwriter and actor Paul Williams. Through every iteration I’ve loved and enjoyed this podcast. I’m devastated to learn that Alonso Duralde hates Life of Chuck, but his incredibly wrong opinion on this subjective medium has inspired me to at last leave my first review of any podcast- 5 stars, top notch, they can do no wrong in my eyes, even when hating a movie I loved. If this review contradicts itself very well, then it contradicts itself. Like the rotating lineup of talented folks on this podcast over the years, and Chuck’s noggin, I contain multitudes.

This podcast is simply delightful. The hosts have an easy, fun rapport and each episode has a lively, thoughtful discussion of the week’s film. I am an Alonso superfan, so I follow where he goes, but Drea and Kevin are also so enjoyable. Fun way to end my work week!

What keeps me coming back to this podcast? Is it Ify’s taste in movies and horniness on main? Is it Alonso’s dedication to Holiday Hallmark movies? Is it Midwest princess Drea’s Minnesotan accent peeping out? Yes! Yes to all! Plus they are insightful and fun and funny people. Love their dynamic. And love that they cover movies that aren’t always the most mainstream. Way to go y’all! Also Ify, I’m loving your part in Never Stop Blowing Up on Drop out. Incredible.
Heretic episode, barely talked about the movie??

I was excited to listen to the Heretic ep with Ross. But they BARELY talked about the film. They could have really leaned into Ross’s knowledge of religion. There is so much to unpack in this film… 100% disappointed. First and last episode I will ever listen to of this pod. I absolutely hate when pods dont talk about the topic they advertise.
