Pixel Soup

Infinite wallpapers. No two ever the same.

Your Mac makes them itself, dithered live on your own GPU, drifting slowly behind your icons, and yours to keep the moment one looks right.

Free for 3 days, then one payment, no subscription · macOS 14 or later · Apple silicon and Intel · Also on the Mac App Store

01

They never run out

Each one is a shape, a palette, a dither and a seed. That is over a hundred thousand before you touch a single dial, and every one of them keeps moving. Shuffle until something stops you, then keep that one.

02

Still or moving

Freeze any single frame as your desktop picture, or let it keep drifting behind your icons at a speed you choose. Drop in a photo and it dithers that instead.

03

Stays on your Mac

A small handle sits on the edge of your screen: click it and the editor opens, no Dock icon, no window in the way. Sandboxed, no account, no analytics, and nothing about you leaves your Mac.

The Pixel Soup editor open on a Mac desktop: a live preview, twelve shape tiles and sliders, over an animated dithered wallpaper
The editor. Pick a shape, a palette and a dither, press Apply, and it is your desktop.

Questions

Is it a subscription?

No. You pay once and it is yours, updates included.

Will an animated wallpaper drain my battery?

It is drawn by the GPU at a low frame rate, pauses when windows cover the desktop, and slows down again in Low Power Mode. A still wallpaper costs nothing once it is set.

Does it work with more than one display?

Yes. Every display gets the wallpaper at its own resolution, and plugging one in or out sorts itself.

Which Macs does it run on?

macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple silicon and Intel.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. The download from this site is the full app, free for three days. No account, no card. If you want to keep it after that, a licence is one payment.

Direct download or Mac App Store?

Same app, same price. The direct download comes with a licence key and updates itself; the App Store version updates through the App Store.

Can I use the wallpapers somewhere else?

Yes. Export a PNG and it is yours to use anywhere, including commercially.
