Buffy turns to see Giles holding the crowbar over Ethan, who is still on the floor.
BUFFY: Uh, see if you guys can find something to tie him up with.
JOYCE: Um...
Joyce reaches behind her and pulls out a set of handcuffs, dangling them from her thumb and giving her daughter a sheepish but mischievous look.
Buffy looks at the handcuffs, her eyes widening in horror. She does not look at Joyce's face. BUFFY: NEVER tell me.

1. I walked up to Whole Foods tonight and dropped off my Amazon return and got an email saying the money was credited back to my account while I was on the walk home.

2. I did two store visits in Orange County today and Carla came with me and went shopping (one of the stores is right next to a Book Off) while I worked, so we could just go straight to Disneyland on the way home. We haven't been doing midweek trips as much this year, but a friend of hers is in town for work and this was the best time to meet up. (But since the Food and Wine Festival just started, there's a ton of new menu items to try, so it works out in that regard as well.)

3. Tomorrow I am just doing a store visit at the store near home and then WFH in the afternoon for meetings, so no long drives, which will be nice (especially with gas prices as they are, though I do get reimbursed for the store visits).

4. The weather was about 15 degrees cooler today than yesterday at home and around 20 degrees cooler down in OC. Much nicer than yesterday!

5. Molly has been really into the old cardboard cat house lately for some reason.

Seed Starting

Finally started some seeds this past weekend! A little later than I intended, but given that last year I started them a whole 2 months sooner than I ought to have, I'll take it as a win. More seeds than I had realized need to be stratified first, so those are now chilling in the fridge and I'll get them in pots next month instead.

I'm hoping this week it'll be warm enough out that I can get some compost into the garden so it's all prepped when plants are ready to go in. We've already had crocuses and daffodils up for a few weeks, but we also had a frost this morning, so it's still a little early for most things. Unpredictable March! I've got big plans for some of the space this year, but we'll see how much I actually manage to get done. So far I'm mostly working on clearing out the cabinets so I have space for harvests later in the season. I made some tincture blends on Saturday to consolidate some jars, and used up some oils for salve yesterday. I'll have to spend a lot of time over the next couple of months drinking tea to work through my stash of dried herbs. There are worse fates!

The community garden has gotten started too, and I spent some time there today weeding and clearing out dead plants. I took an extra parsley and some stray borage home with me. I've never gotten borage to take in my garden, but I've tried putting it in a different location this time and maybe it'll settle in.

We went down to DCA again today for dinner to meet up with a friend of Carla's who's in town for work but also spending all his downtime at Disneyland.

Since we'd just been to the park a couple days ago and also had had kind of a long day today before getting to the park, we didn't really do much other than have dinner and chat, and then walk around the park and chat, but it was a nice visit.

A friend let me know about a new Bureau of Prisons guideline for treatment of inmates with gender dysphoria, which you can read in its entirety here. The short form is that they're denying trans inmates gender-affirming care despite medical consensus, and substituting conversion therapy, which has been proven to be harmful and does not in any way "cure" gender dysphoria.

Cats may be small, but they take home security very seriously.

Some cats seem convinced they are the official security team of the house. They pick a good spot by the window and keep track of everything happening outside. People walking by, birds landing on a fence, a car door shutting down the street. It all gets logged in the tiny cat brain. From that window post they watch the whole neighborhood like a very serious guard who takes their job extremely seriously.

Inside the house, the patrol continues. Cats wander from room to room like they're checking that everything is still in its proper place. A grocery bag gets a full inspection. A cardboard box becomes an instant watchtower. Even something as simple as someone opening a cabinet can trigger a full investigation. Guests are handled with the same level of attention. A cat will sit nearby, staring quietly like it's deciding whether this new hooman has been properly approved.

Of course, the security team runs on a flexible schedule. Long naps in sunbeams are an important part of the routine. After all, it takes energy to monitor the house all day. But the moment something interesting happens, they're awake and back on duty. Every little noise gets attention. Every movement gets noticed. Living with a cat means there is always a tiny guard somewhere nearby keeping watch over the whole place.

Some cats take a little longer to trust people, but when they do, the bond is really special.

For the past two years, this shy porch cat has slowly become part of the routine. She lived outside, but she always knew where to find food, shelter, and a familiar pair of humans who cared about her. A small house on the porch, daily meals, and the occasional visit indoors helped build a fragile but meaningful trust over time. She's always been cautious and quick to hide, but she kept coming back.

When it came time to move to an upstairs apartment, there was a small test. Food was placed at the top of the stairs during her usual feeding time. To everyone's surprise, she followed and even stepped inside to explore the new place for a moment. That small step felt like a sign that maybe she was ready for something more.

After trapping her and bringing her to the vet for a checkup, it turned out she had already been spayed as part of a TNR program. Now she's settling into a temporary crate space while she adjusts to indoor life. It's a big change for a cat who is used to having the entire outdoors as her territory, so it's no surprise that she's feeling unsure and keeping to herself right now.

But the fact that she relied on this home for food, shelter, and even brought the occasional "gift" says a lot. Trust like that takes time. With patience, quiet space, and plenty of care, this porch cat may slowly realize that she's already right where she belongs.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33: I wanted to love this game, but the most I could muster up was an appreciation for its artistry, world-building, and ambition. Too much of the story was left clouded, hidden behind impossible bosses, and character motivations kept opaque to preserve surprises for the audience. Massive spoilers behind the cut. )

On top of that, T and I both found the combat difficult in an unsatisfying way, and having to learn not just entirely different skill trees but power-up mechanisms for every character felt unnecessary. Eventually we turned the difficulty level down, which helped, but in the end it felt like we were just slogging through the final battles to get to the ending and be done with it. Disappointing.

Plur1bus: Like many folks, I was eagerly anticipating this one, based on my love for Rhea Seehorn in Better Call Saul, and it lived up to that expectation -- although in other ways I wasn't sure what to expect, and it certainly kept me guessing throughout. It's hard to say much without spoilers, so I'll limit my thoughts here to being just generally impressed by it, and blown away by Seehorn's performance, and also by Karolina Wydra, who played Zosia, a tough role on several levels. Excited to see where it goes!

The 2026 Winter Olympics: Despite all the problems, I do still love the Olympics -- getting to watch and learn about different sports, witness joy and heartbreak and feats of incredible athleticism, following developing storylines and experience the unexpected. I dipped in and out of a lot of events, but I ended up spending the most time on curling. T is a fan -- it's perhaps the only Olympic sport that he'll actively sit down and watch with me -- and because the athletes are all miked, you can hear them discussing strategy with each other, which is really interesting. I also caught some figure skating; in particular, the men's and women's free programs were fascinating case studies in the folly of expectations, and I genuinely loved watching the two gold medal winners put in the performances of their lives.

Went to the ballet again last weekend; will report on that tomorrow I think. Meanwhile, for the music meme, today's prompt is for an underrated song. This is a somewhat hard choice when working with new songs, as something that is new is discovered or undiscovered; overrated and underrated require a certain maturity. So I chose a song from 2023.

Abandoned and alone – being a kitten in the woods isn't safe, or recommended.

This poor thing was just abandoned on her own. A couple heard distant meows coming from the woods, they immediately went towards the sound, concerned about the idea that a kitten would be there lost and alone. The kitten was dirty, covered in dirt and dust. They immediately took in the kitten, cleaned her up, and they are doing everything they can to make sure the kitten is well. Maybe they will end up adopting the poor thing, but if they don't we can all trust that they'll take good care of the kitten until finding her a furrever home.

Out my front window I can see:

* White flowers from the potato vine in the backyard
* Dark pink of the flowering crabapple
* Fresh pale green growth on the podocarpus
* Several fruit in different stages of ripening on the limequat tree
* Fresh growth and some flowers on the redcurrants bushes
* Fresh growth on the rosebush and fig tree
* Fresh growth on the dwarf pomegranate that we've decided is coming out this year. 😢

Of the plants that we're going to remove I'm saddest about the pomegranate.
We're also going to take out two Chinese Fringe bushes because they're crowding the citrus trees, and two shrubs at the end of the patio that aren't thriving at all.

My plan is to cut down the foliage and ask Sergio to take out the stumps, and maybe dig them out a little bit so we could try and plant something else in their spots.

I had a day all planned Saturday--Farmer's Market in the morning, some studio work, tackle taxes. At 2:30 pm, I needed to stop and head down to Club Mud to help set up our studio sale.

And then it turned sunny.

And actually, gorgeous. By the time I got back from Farmer's Market, it was sunny and 60°. An opportunity we couldn't pass up.

So indoor activities were cancelled in favor of pulling all the pots out of the shed, setting up trestle tables in the carport, and sorting, counting, and packing the van for Saturday Market. Denise recorded inventory while I organized stock, and, with a short break for lunch, we had the entire van packed and ready for Market, with four weeks to go.

Give em the ol' razzle dazzle!

When life seems overwhelming, when it feels like too much, like the weight of the world is pressing on you and you can't get up or seem to do anything, then there's only one thing to do….and that's to give 'em the ol' razzle dazzle by scrolling cat memes. The phrase became widely known through stage and film musicals, especially from the famous song, "Razzle Dazzle" in the musical Chicago. To give the glitter and guts with a bold and brazen confidence, dramatic flair, and extra delight to distract yourself (or the audience) from whatever it is you want distracting from. There's something so real about it, and so true. Life is full of distractions here and there, and when you can exhale into them is when you know you really needed the space from heaviness.

The ol' razzle dazzle is just like cat memes. There's a certain dissociative charm about it, there's a show, something distracting, something colorful and entertaining that you can't take your eyes off of. It's about a spectacle, flair, and a touch of theatrical mischief. When someone brings the razzle dazzle, they're not just doing something well, they're doing it with style. Just like these precious and wholesome cat memes do everything with style, enjoy their razzle dazzle as you celebrate life.

Today is cloudy and chilly with gusts of wind.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

In the water jug greenhouses, a few shady wildflowers are sprouting.  :D

EDIT 3/9/26 -- My gold curly willow cuttings have arrived!  \o/  I have put two in water and one in a pot.

EDIT 3/9/26 -- I took cuttings from the older serviceberry tree and a shellbark hickory sapling to put in the willow cups.

EDIT 3/9/26 -- I cracked open some peach pits.  It was a lot easier than I expected.  I found a natural hollow in the concrete step, where I balanced a peach pit on its edge.  A seam goes along the sides.  I put a flathead screwdriver point into the seam and tapped the handle with a hammer.  Most of the peach pits popped apart neatly, releasing the seed.  A couple chipped in fragments.  I think I got several viable seeds, which I put in a baggie of damp sand.  I also bagged up some leftover persimmon seeds.  Then I put the baggies in the refrigerator for cold stratification to see if they'll sprout.

EDIT 3/9/26 -- I tried using an ax to hack away at one of the saplings in the driveway.  I certainly made more progress than I did with the saw.  It's slow going, but I might be able to beaver it down eventually.  The question is whether I'll have the time and energy for that, with all the other spring yardening to do.

EDIT 3/9/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 3/9/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 3/9/26 -- I transplanted a few more snowdrops from the parking lot to the apricot tree.

I am done for the night.

I love a routine

Mar. 9th, 2026 11:25 am
hrj: (Default)

I sometimes say that I live and die by routines. If I have a routine for doing something, then it gets done. If I don't have a routine (or I depart from one) then anything could happen. This means there are things I do more often than I need to (like checking blood pressure or recording weight) because if I don't fit them into a daily routine, I don't get around to it. But it means that things that need a less frequent routine are sometimes tricky (like theoretically once-a-month housekeeping tasks, such as cleaning the cat waterer).

The daily bike-coffeeshop-write-bike routine is solid (even though there are two days when it's coffeeshop-write-gym instead), but if I need to do something substantial before biking--especially if it involves putting on normal clothes--then it's hard for me to shift myself back to it later in the day.

So on a day like today when I started off with an online podcast interview to record, I probably won't get the bike out. Knowing that, I plan to do yardwork and housecleaning. But there's always the temptation to say, "I make my own rules; I could just take a day off." Except I bought some Alpine strawberry sets a few days ago and they really need to get in the ground...

Would you know what to do if you hear meows coming from your ceiling? Well, if not then this story will give you the low down on how one couple made a miraculous rescue and added four paws to their fur family in the process.

It is hard to imagine, but if you have ever had a rat or rodent running around your ceiling cavity we can imagine the sensation is similar, albeit a little different. In both cases you want the creature to get out of the ceiling, but in one case you want to keep and cuddle the creature and in the other you hope they have taken the long sleep before you come face to face.

Either way, this was the conundrum put before this cat loving couple when the Cat Distribution System decided to bestow upon them a cat. As we all know the CDS likes to work its magic in a myriad of mysterious ways but this tale of kitten adoption is quite the unique one. Who knows perhaps this couple liked solving escape rooms and that is why the CDS delivered their kitten like this. Regardless of reason, with a bunch of patience this couple became pawrents for the second time and the rest is history.

Monday has officially arrived, and frankly, it deserves a collective hiss.

If your current mood is less "rise and shine" and more "stay and whine", you are purrfectly in sync with the legendary spirit of the world's favorite grump. There is a specific cathartic joy in embracing your inner sourpuss when the alarm clock dares to interrupt a perfectly good dream about a silent office. We are channeling that classic "I had fun once, it was awful" energy to navigate the morning commute with a permanent, judgmental squint that all cats are capable of.

Being a cat pawrent on a Monday means realizing your feline friend is living your dream life: staying home, nappingwhenever they want, and ignoring every single notification (or, the bliss of not knowing what a notification even is). Whether you're feeling hissterical about your inbox or just clawfully tired of being a functional adult, it's time to channel your inner grumpiness. Let's face this Monday with a flick of the tail and a firm "no."
