Read before friending, please.

Due to GenderFail at LJ, I'm accepting friend requests only at Dreamwidth from now on. You can comment using ID or with your DW account name. If you need an invite code, please let me know.

Some entries in this journal are friends-locked. I'm trying to keep my friends list manageable, so please don't be offended if I don't friend you back. There will still be plenty of public posts to peruse, mostly political. And there will always be pretty pictures. :->

If you want me to friend you, you need to introduce yourself. It's creepy when strangers friend a journal without so much as a hello. Comments are screened.

If I friend you, I'll read your DW and I'll even comment. Please remember to subscribe *and* give access to your Dreamwidth journal if you want to friend me. If you don't have the time/inclination to interact, eventually I will remove you from my friends list. I'm not interested in friending voyeurs and superstars. I have zero patience for that nonsense.

Politically speaking I am progressive, sometimes I describe myself as "hopelessly radical." If you're uncomfortable with that, you won't want to friend this DW.

I'm heading out to Comic Con this week. As photography is the main reason I go to Comic-Con, I've set up photoshoots with two cosplayers. And I secured a photo pass to shoot the competitors in the Masquerade.

In case you haven't heard, the Con is off to a tragic note, with the death of a Twilight fan.

Twilight fan hit by car and killed at Comic-Con
http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/jul/10/woman-hit-car-downtown-san-diego-dies/

Also a little more insight from someone who was waiting in line with her (according to a witness, she wasn't hit by the car):
http://www.twitlonger.com/show/i90ipv

I'm heartened to see so many people rallying around her and already setting up a memorial fund for her family. And save for the occasional tasteless joke, the victim-blaming seems to be at a minimum. That said, I hope that the tragedy will prompt Comic-Con to take a more organized approach to line security. I've been saying for the longest that they need to hand out bracelets so people can come and go, and they can avoid the kind of panic that seems to have led to the fan's death. Also, if you're going to tell people not to line up before Wednesday without enforcing the rule, you're being passive. At best you're creating confusion, and at worst, chaos. If you can't be bothered to be proactive about protecting the fans, don't book these huge events to attract them.

They were the first to feature the video and ask for the story behind it.

Shari Ellis has made an inevitable contribution to the comedic YouTube videos series "Shit Girls Say." Done with class and humor, "Sh*t Duran Duran Fans Say" is sure to become a classic, and Shari gave us the scoop on how it all came together.

I’m proud of the video as it was a collaboration of friends. I grew up in Chicago, where I met Paula, my editor on the piece. And I went to Yale University, where I met Robinne, who is a professional actress. I love the Shit People Say videos because it’s a fun way for people to tell their stories. I was inspired to write a script by a couple of parodies: Shit White Girls Say to Black Girls and Shit Record Nerds Say. Initially, I sent the script to a few friends just for a laugh and I was going to leave it at that. But Paula called me and convinced me to shoot it, and she even offered to edit it. So I sent the script to Robinne and asked if she would be the star. I was incredibly lucky to have such talented women interested and available to do the project. And other friends and classmates came through making their homes and equipment available, so it seemed destined to happen."

Shari Ellis is a photography student and production coordinator in animation and visual effects in Los Angeles. She’s been a Duranie/Nick fan since 1985.

The Daily Duranie Valentines Day Mashup!
http://www.dailyduranie.com/2012/02/daily-duranie-valentines-day-mashup.html

Have you seen it?!? Sh*t Duran Duran Fans Say is a short YouTube video that's worth watching for some giggles.

In order to laugh, I think you've got to put your ego aside, and recognize that this person IS a fan, and it's absolutely fine to laugh at ourselves. I've learned to laugh on a pretty much daily basis. Let's face it - I'm over 40 and I'm blogging about a band. Yeah, that's worth laughing at. Sure, I make it sound good by saying I'm writing about being a FAN of the rock band rather than constantly posting "I love you" notes.... (A creepy thought. I'm sure someone has already done that though.) but the reality is: I'm writing about a band. So I'm giving you permission to find the funny in what we are...and if you watch this and find that you've never said any of it, at ANY time....maybe you're just not a "Real Duranie"......Ha!!

Also from the Daily Duranie:

http://www.dailyduranie.com/2012/02/typical-fan.html

What is a typical fan? We all know what the definition of fan is, right? According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, a fan is, "A person who has a strong interest in or admiration for a particular sport, art or entertainment form, or famous person.". In our case, we have a strong interest in Duran Duran. Okay. That makes sense. Then, what does it mean to be typical? According to the same dictionary, typical means to have the "characteristic of a particular person or thing." Okay. The question then becomes: Do you have the characteristics of a Duranie? What are the characteristics of Duranies? This feels like very dangerous territory because Duranies are a large and diverse bunch. On Valentine's Day, Rhonda posted the youtube clip of "Sh*t Duran Duran Fans Say." Obviously, this video did exactly what I'm talking about here by trying to summarize the characteristics of "typical" Duranies. Here's the clip again to refresh your memory

Hey everyone -

I took a portrait photography class this semester, and I want to share some photos I took for my final assignment. It was on cosplayers, a natural extension of the very reason I go to Comic Con these days.

For the assignment, we had to do three individual portraits and one group portrait. I took photos of people in and out of costume, so I ended up turning in 8 prints. I shot cosplayers from the Batman, Superman, X-Men Green Lantern and Street Fighter fandoms.

These are some of my favorites:

Hope you enjoy, I would love to continue this project.

Hey everyone -

As most of you know, I've gone back to school full time to study photography. I'm taking two very demanding classes in commercial and portrait photography. This means I have to hunker down. So I'll be going on internet hiatus.

As I remember how I made it through school the first time... well... we didn't have the internet. I stopped listening to the radio and stopped watching TV almost altogether for four years. I don't know if I can do without Pandora, but I'm going to limit my internet usage to email. This means no DW, LJ or other forms of social media.

If you need me or just want to send me major life updates, please send me a private message.

I'll miss you guys. Wish me luck!

I got a letter from the publishers of Photographer's Forum today. I'd entered a few photos into their Spring 2011 contest. I expected the letter to be a typical "thank you for your submission, we regret to inform you..." rejection. Instead, it was to inform me that my photo has been selected as a finalist, and that it will be published in a hardcover coffee table Best of Photography 2011 book at the end of the year.

Here is the photo:

Taken at a local cemetery.

I'm going to be published! I cried when I read the letter. The news was a much-needed boost. I've been greatly second-guessing my decision to go into photography lately. It was rejected for my college's student show, so it's really nice to know my instincts weren't completely off.

Title of this particular roundup borrowed from [personal profile] ithiliana.

This latest one involves author Jim Butcher. Yes, the constant RaceFailing is so old it's putrid, but as someone who tries to do roundups on a semi-regular basis, I feel a duty to link to these and, as a former Chicagoan and recovering fan, this latest one in particular.

[Untitled Entry]
http://karnythia.livejournal.com/1672436.html
So Jim Butcher posted this & many of his followers rushed to support him. Except one who tried to explain. Nicely. Repeatedly.

Same old same old: a reader posts critical review (not professional critic, a reader, because, well, we have the internet) a month ago on tumblr, frustrated at the way Butcher's fictional Chicago contains all the racist stereotypes imposed on her hometown AND whitewashing.

A month ago. Recently, the AUTHOR finds it and posts about it to his twitter with his gazillion fans, who are now mostly up in arms defending their hero.

Because he feels hurt. And he's the expert on his fictional Chicago, not anybody who lives in Chicago. And how dare they play "the racist card."

Lather, rinse, repeat.

this is what white supremacy looks like. it has lotsa people behind it who wouldn't call themselves racist, and yet it crushes poc easily and quickly.

it isn't an isolated event. it's happened often enough that there's a clear pattern.

A bit too frivolous to call it a roundup link, so I won't.

An email from a furious mother-in-law (or is that mother-in-law-to-be?) to her son's fiance was sent to a few friends and has since gone massively viral. There are several versions of the email out there, I suppose, as people have edited out the bits that suit the side they sympathize with most. This appears to be the most complete version:

http://fingerrollsandfoldingchairs.wordpress.com/2011/06/30/wheres-les-dawson-when-you-need-him/

I admit it, I have an almost Victorian sense of manners and I get pretty miffed when people show they have none. So at *first*, I was wondering what the big damn deal was. And I can tell you from personal experience that that guests-waking-up-with-the-household thing is SRS BSNS for certain older, British people.

That said, what an uncouth way to go about educating someone on their manners. I'm not the only one who's mentioned that the MIL reminds me of a Britcom they've been showing on PBS for years called "Keeping up Appearances," in which the extremely annoying main character's last name is Bucket but she wants everyone to pronounce it Bouquets. The MIL seems to share the same middle-class-aspiring-to-something-more sensibilities.

And then I got to the diabetes tirade. Oh, I can see this woman is on some privileged, ableist bullshit. How dare someone inconvenience others with a disease? That was revolting.

But this is the reason I love this email, and it was worth finding a complete version:

I am being kept awake – or woken early – by Bomber who is so profoundly upset by your behaviour on your recent visit that he is depressed and anxious.

According to news reports, Bomber is the family dog.

Two other reasons this particular link is the best? The Les Dawson YouTube video at the bottom. The joke about the mother-in-law's funeral almost made me pee in my seat, I kid you not. And I'm always up for being introduced to British comedians, old and new.

Also, this blog fills the British Expat Blog Void I've needed to fill for the past few months. ;->

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/jun/26/gay-girl-damascus-accused-defending
Tom MacMaster, the US graduate student behind the Gay Girl in Damascus blog hoax, has been accused of creating another fake Arab female online identity to defend his own reputation online.

And the blog in which he commented:

"Amina" was popular because her writing appealed to white audiences, she dabbled in erotica, she wanted to bring the Castro to Damascus and she was at best lukewarm on Israeli apartheid. While that may be good for pieces of fiction, I prefer the real voices of real Arab queers--who are not on the radar of the mainstream media and who's real issues will never focus prominently on NPR or anywhere else.

Vincent Who? Online Screening
http://azn-jack-fiend.livejournal.com/107015.html

*trigger warning for racial violence*
Chin’s death and the lenient sentencing of his murderers led to a nationwide coalition of Asian American activist groups, becoming what journalist Helen Zia called a "watershed moment" for Asian groups throughout the United States. Where previously there had been separate groups for Chinese Americans, Japanese Americans, Filipino Americans, etc., the death of Vincent Chin united Asian Americans to form a pan-ethnic coalition to protest the injustices and racism that Asians faced.

In recent years Vincent Chin has largely been forgotten among the general public. But we must remember him, his name, his legacy. Remember the tragedy of his death, but also the silver lining: the change that it has brought, and the change that is still yet to come. We must continue to carry on his torch and continue fighting for justice.

I've been drawn to stories of initially reluctant participants connecting to the idea of Slutwalk. So here's one that was linked at the Slutwalk LA Facebook from a blog run by sex workers.

Warning for potential triggering - the author's account of her assault while dancing on stage is pretty harrowing.

I Think I Just Figured Out SlutWalk
http://titsandsass.com/?p=2377
SlutWalk won’t change much. Men who rape are still going to need to dominate and harm their victims. Men and women who disregard the rights of others because of the perception they have of those people aren’t going to stop believing that those people deserve it. Let’s face it, SlutWalk isn’t going to prevent victims from being created.

But it will create unity among survivors which have already been through it. SlutWalk means unity. It means I’m going to walk among women and men who have been there, who refuse to be silenced any longer. Who will confront the truth, even if they never have the opportunity to confront their attacker.

I’ll be there.

*************

The Power of SlutWalk Los Angeles was in its Stories
http://www.edenfantasys.com/sexis/sex-and-society/slutwalk-los-angeles-0617111/
"Victim blaming in not acceptable, it doesn’t matter who the victim is. Slut shaming is not ok, all it does is support and perpetuate rape culture. I’m doing this for personal reasons. Maybe I don’t unanimously support the SlutWalk message, but this is a start for a lot of us."

*************

After reading that article, I poked around the SexIs site a bit, and found this article:

Christianity Today Blog Opposes Vibrators, Orgasms for Single Women
http://www.edenfantasys.com/sexis/sex/christianity-today-opposes-vibrators-orgasm-0617116/

However, writer and author Anna Broadway, in the end, comes down on the side of "God thinks it would be better that you not masturbate."

And this makes us sad, because we’re just not conflicted at all about vibrators or orgasms. But we’re not the only ones here. How about it, readers?

Intrigued, I viewed the original article. Full disclosure - I was raised Lutheran and I'm not anymore, but articles on Christianity and religion in general still interest me. And call me sheltered, but I find the fact that anyone still struggles in this day and age with the issue of masturbation from a religious point-of-view fascinating and even a bit shocking.

The title of the article above is a bit misleading - the original blog doesn't condemn masturbation solely for women. It's a women's Christianity blog, so that is the focus. But overall the article employs a psychological approach to masturbation that's not gender-specific:

The Cult of the Orgasm
http://blog.christianitytoday.com/women/2011/06/the_cult_of_the_orgasm.html

This is the crux of the article:
But masturbation fixes none of that. Instead of hope, it brings emptiness. Instead of moving you from loneliness and self-absorption to things that are excellent, praiseworthy, and encouraging (Phil. 4:8), it takes the mind to increasingly dark places. And instead of fostering greater self-sacrifice toward others, in breeds an increasing self-concern and inward focus.

The good news is, we don’t need masturbation to prepare for marriage and sex — if God has those ahead for us. There are many ways to grow in loving others well without being in a romantic relationship, and the more we learn to love like Jesus, the better for all of our relationships.

The comments are worth a read as clearly not all the readers agree with the author.
