Kathryn Byrne shared thisToday, I had the privilege of becoming a New Zealand citizen, alongside 520 others from all over the world. What struck me most about the ceremony was the genuine celebration of diversity. There was no expectation to leave your past behind or become someone different. Instead, the message was clear: bring your whole self, your story, your culture and your experiences, and help shape New Zealand’s future while letting New Zealand become part of yours. It was a powerful reminder that belonging doesn’t require sameness. Congratulations to my fellow new citizens. Kia ora - I’m proud to be part of Aotearoa New Zealand’s next chapter. And thank you to Auckland Council for hosting such a warm and memorable ceremony.

Kathryn Byrne shared thisExcited to see Woolworths New Zealand and so many other teams coming together for the Aotearoa AI Hackathon. Looking forward to seeing how AI can help create a more circular food system, reduce waste across the supply chain, and ensure more good food reaches Kiwis who need it most. Wishing everyone the best of luck—can’t wait to see the ideas that emerge! Particular thanks to Nicola Voice and Veronica Cowing for your leadership and encouragement!Kathryn Byrne shared thisWhy are we a Gold Sponsor of this year’s AI Hackathon from the AI Forum New Zealand? Two great reasons: 1) We want to help solve the problem of food waste, and one of this year’s topics (developed by Woolworths and Kai Commitment) is how AI could help reduce waste across the food supply chain, from farm to fork. 2) We want to encourage innovation and to get our super smart people using AI for good. The AI Hackathon brings people together to learn, collaborate, and build practical AI solutions that make a real difference. It’s happening at multiple places across Aotearoa this week with the best ideas going on to a national final in September. We’ve got three Woolworths teams in the mix next week, so let’s get hacking! Kathryn Byrne shared thisCongrats to Matthew Grainger and Shannon Sibley and all the team involved for the launch of the new Woolworths Flaxmere store today. Mauri mahi, mauri ora (through work, we prosper). This is significant on so many levels: Bringing 80 new jobs for locals, providing long-term food and job security and leading the way on co-design with the community. Plus the store is state-of-the-art and supported by internationally leading sustainability initiatives. However, it was the welcome from the community was by far the most inspiring. ...The video is well worth a watch to see the passion and energy brought by the community and team. Flaxmere College - Ka rawe ! #WoolworthsNZ #CommunityInvestment #Flaxmere #FlaxmereCollege #HawkesBay #JobCreation #NewStoreOpening #RetailInnovation #TWPropertyKathryn Byrne shared thisThere is nothing I like more than opening a new supermarket, but what really spins my wheels is seeing the difference Woolworths can make in Kiwi communities. 80 new jobs, 100% filled by locals. That is the joy of long term investment in community, and today, we officially opened the doors to our brand-new, $25M Woolworths Flaxmere store! The turnout was huge, and the vibe was electric. Seeing the crowd gather in the early morning, hearing the spine-tingling, thunderous performance of the Tika Tonu haka from the Flaxmere College students. Ngā mihi nui to Hastings District Mayor Wendy Schollum and TW Property’s Terry May for cutting the ribbon - Mayor Wendy we totally agree ‘This is what it looks like when the community leads the way’. This isn't just another property development, or another supermarket. Yes, it is a state-of-the-art, 3,460m² full-service supermarket. But most of all it is a long-awaited asset for the heart of the Flaxmere community, built from the ground up to bring: ✨ Long-term food and job security for the community. 🔋 Internationally leading sustainability initiatives, from EV charging stations to energy-efficient refrigeration. 🎨 Incredible concrete patterned panels inspired directly by the Flaxmere community. A massive thank you to Shannon Sibley, our Flaxmere Store Manager and all of our Woolies whānau who worked and will continue to work tirelessly, and our partners TW Property who helped bring our vision to life. Most importantly, a huge thank you to the wonderful people of Flaxmere for welcoming us with care and open arms. We are incredibly proud to serve you. Check out the incredible energy and HUGE haka in the video! 📹 Woolworths New Zealand #Flaxmere #FlaxmereCollege #HawkesBay #JobCreation #NewStoreOpening #RetailInnovation Terry May Sally Copland Shannon Sibley Jason Stockill Gordon Harcourt Wendy Schollum Cam Ward Simon Tremain Catherine Wedd Rob McCartney Katherine Ellington

Kathryn Byrne shared thisI’m back in NZ after a whirlwind trip to the UK - seeing family, old friends and joining my MBA class reunion after 15 years (all of which I’ve spent overseas). As rapid as the trip was for such a long haul flight, it was amazing to be surrounded by people who inspire you, who motivate you and who, even after 15+ years, keep you true to yourself. When you have built such strong connections with people, the years and distance simply fall away. The Māori proverb comes to mind: "He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tāngata, he tāngata, he tāngata" ("What is the most important thing in the world? It is the people, it is the people, it is the people!") Kathryn Byrne reposted thisIf you’ve ever wanted to run a $1bn retail business, this is your moment... I’m looking for a Head of Buying / Merchandise Manager to take the reins of our Grocery division here at Woolworths NZ - the engine room of our business. This isn't just a big portfolio; it's one that shapes how New Zealand eats. What makes it incredible is the sheer diversity: one hour you’re collaborating with a boutique Kiwi supplier to scale their dream, and the next you’re negotiating joint business plans with the world’s largest brands and multinationals across both branded and own-label; beautiful chaos! You'll be using your experience to drive better buying and working directly with me to innovate and redefine what modern grocery retail looks like in Aotearoa. But the real job is people; leading the team, coaching and mentoring a diverse group of talented buyers and category managers. If you are a commercial leader who thrives on change, scale, speed, and real purpose, I want to hear from you. 👇 Check out the links in the comments to apply, or slide into my DMs for a confidential chat. Kathryn Byrne liked thisKathryn Byrne liked thisThe certificate arrived in June. Strategy Latitudes, registered as a U.S. trademark, No. 8,283,885, arrived after more than a year of waiting. I studied geography at university and never stopped being a geographer. Longitude runs down the map, each line going deeper into one place, which is how most careers get built. Latitude runs across, joining places separated by an ocean that share the same conditions. My career has followed the second kind of line. That's what the company is named for: strategy along the latitudes. Two years in, it's done brand, marketing, and innovation strategy across drinks, fintech, technology, B2B, coffee, fresh produce, packaged food, fragrance, and grooming. More categories than I expected. Global companies, small agencies, collectives, and people who mainly wanted someone to think alongside them. Alongside that: writing, award entries written and judged, teaching, coaching and mentoring, strategic advisory, hands-on work for the nonprofits I care about, and a book, Thinking in Latitudes, out next spring. A company named for sideways travel ought to have the range to match. None of that happened on its own. Thank you to the clients who hired an independent when a bigger name was the safer call. To the collaborators who brought me onto their work, and the people who made an introduction or answered a question. To the people who supported me in so many ways. Two years of good company. The full story of the name is in this week's post on my Substack, Thinking in Latitudes. Link in the first comment.

Five years ago, we brought our relationship with Woolworths closer together, combining our data analytics and AI capabilities with Woolworths' retail expertise and scale. Since then, wiq has become part of how so many retail businesses and teams work with data and insights every day. Congratulations to everyone at wiq, past and present.

Kathryn Byrne liked thisKathryn Byrne liked thisTwo CEOs. Two leadership styles. One thing in common. ✨ Having spent much of my career working alongside and reporting into senior executives, I have watched leadership closely. At Revved., two leaders particularly stood out to me. Different businesses. Different personalities. But a strikingly similar approach. Humility. Accessibility. People first. And the willingness to walk the talk. Nikhil Ravishankar, CEO Air New Zealand What struck me about Nikhil was the combination of technical depth, clarity and genuine humanity. Coming into the CEO role from technology and transformation gives Nikhil a distinctive perspective on how complex organisations need to evolve. But what stayed with me wasn't his career trajectory. It was one answer to the question; what keeps you awake at night? “Wasting human potential.” He spoke about leadership as the responsibility to create an environment where people can become the best version of themselves. That is a powerful definition of leadership. When we met afterwards, he immediately picked up that I was from Goa. As someone who also came to New Zealand and made it home, seeing an immigrant leading one of our country's most iconic organisations made the moment particularly meaningful to me. Jason Paris, CEO One New Zealand Jason's leadership lesson is different; be visible and accountable to your customers. He doesn't hide behind the CEO title. He puts himself out there, talks openly about customer issues, showcases his people and calls himself the customer's “personal account manager.” That isn't a gimmick. It sends a powerful message that the accountability starts at the top. I have watched Jason do this consistently over the years, including fronting up personally when things haven't gone right. That level of accessibility and ownership is rare. As he prepares to hand over the leadership of One NZ after nearly eight years, I wanted to acknowledge the leadership philosophy I have admired for some time. What I took away, "Leadership doesn't become more powerful as the title gets bigger." The best leaders I have encountered don't need the hierarchy to announce their importance. They listen, stay curious, make themselves accessible, own the difficult moments and create space for other people to grow. And perhaps that is the real lesson. Authentic leadership makes people want to follow not because they have to, but because they trust the person leading them. Thank you, Nikhil and Jason, for reminding us that leadership can be both high-performance and deeply human. And thank you Revved for putting these conversations in the room. Which leadership quality has made the biggest difference to you; humility, accessibility, accountability or something else? #Leadership #AuthenticLeadership #HumanLeadership #NewZealandLeadership #CustomerCentricity

Kathryn Byrne liked thisKathryn Byrne liked thisHow do you evolve AI Agents in Production without touching the Base Code? In a newly published paper I co-authored with some of my brilliant colleagues at Google we propose a solution to this problem. The solution wraps around an AI Agent enabling it to safely learn on the job as circumstances change and new requirements are discovered. We call it the “Agent Gym”. Read the full paper on arXiv: https://lnkd.in/gri3pcjQ This framework is highly relevant for anyone designing robust, production-grade agentic platforms that require enterprise safety rails. It’s been proven in the real world and sample code is available. Huge congratulations to my amazing co-authors on this milestone: Pouya Ghiasnezhad Omran, Michael Zimmerman, Ashmita Kapoor, Tanya D. Kathryn Byrne liked thisKathryn Byrne liked thisCan you spot the difference? Same products. Two retail stores. One photo is me at Woolworths New Zealand, holding our products on a mainstream shelf. The other is me in our local Indian store, holding the exact same products. For most of my life these were two separate worlds. If you wanted Indian groceries, you went to the Indian store. The idea of our products sitting in a mainstream supermarket felt like something that happened to other cuisines, not ours. I never imagined this crossover would happen. Then recently, standing in that same ethnic store, I watched a European couple, a Mediterranean couple, and so many other non-Indian shoppers filling their baskets with Indian ingredients. In the store I’d grown up thinking was just for us. Because that’s the truth now. This food isn’t just for Indian people. It’s for everyone. And the photo that undoes me is the last one. Mum and Dad, standing in Woolworths, holding our products in their hands. This is the generation that arrived carrying their whole culture in a suitcase. We would drive across the city for a taste of India, while also buying lunch box snacks at your mainstream supermarket. That’s what this means to me. Two generations, finally able to shop anywhere, anytime, and a whole country discovering that Indian food was always meant to be shared. This is only the beginning, of belonging everywhere.

Kathryn Byrne liked thisKathryn Byrne liked thisA few colleagues & friends know that I've loved having a crack at making genai movie trailers in my spare time, which between kids and work is basically 7:30pm - 10pm. Anyway, a few months back Peter H. Diamandis & the Moonshot mates launched the #FutureVisionXPRIZE, a competition to imagine sci-fi futures that aren't dystopian. So I gave it a go. 3 submissions later, one of them has made it through to Stage 1. I'm not sure which one, or what Stage 1 actually is (?), but that doesn't matter. Views do count though, so if you've got 30 seconds, give one a watch! AI isn’t the most likely thing to bring your systems down. The interface between AI and legacy systems will. And most boards won’t see it until it breaks. CPS 230 and 234 make this your problem now. Here’s how to recognise the risk and govern the seam.
