You have come too far not to go further, you have done too much, to not do more - Antony Royal MSWG (Māori Spectrum Working Group) and Tū Ātea Gala marks the end of an era Earlier this week, we came together to celebrate an extraordinary chapter in the Māori spectrum journey - the achievements of the Māori Spectrum Working Group (MSWG), and the contribution of Tū Ātea founding Chief Executive, Antony Royal. The evening was an opportunity to acknowledge decades of determination and advocacy that have advanced Māori rights and interests in radio spectrum, and the people who carried that kaupapa forward. We also farewelled Antony Royal, whose leadership has been instrumental in taking the aspirations of MSWG from agreement into action and helping establish Tū Ātea for the generations to come. While one era comes to a close, the kaupapa continues, built on the mahi, courage and vision of those who came before us. Ka tū ātea, kia ora ai te iwi.

Tū Ātea appoints Shane Taurima as Pou Matua Tū Ātea is pleased to announce the appointment of Shane Taurima (Ngāti Kahungunu, Rongomaiwahine) as our new Pou Matua, Group Chief Executive. Shane is currently Kaihautū, Chief Executive, of Whakaata Māori, which he has led for eight years through significant digital and organisational transformation and strengthened financial resilience. Tū Ātea Chair, Robin Hapi CNZM, says Shane brings the strategic, commercial and cultural leadership needed as Tū Ātea moves into its next stage of development. Shane says he is honoured to be entrusted with the role. “Tū Ātea stands on the shoulders of generations of Māori leaders who fought for recognition of spectrum as a taonga and for Māori rights and interests in the technologies and infrastructure shaping our future. I look forward to working alongside the people of Tū Ātea to build on what has already been achieved and create enduring value and opportunity for our people.” Shane will take up the role in February 2027, succeeding founding Chief Executive Antony Royal. We acknowledge Antony's significant contribution to building Tū Ātea, bringing together the Group's spectrum assets and businesses and laying the commercial and operational foundations for its next stage of growth. What a difference a year makes! Last year, Suede Sadler was part of Empathy, the winning team at the AI Forum New Zealand AI Hackathon at Auckland University of Technology South Campus. Their idea focused on using AI to help identify learning challenges for tamariki aged 5-8. Following the hackathon, the team continued developing their idea, carrying out research and connecting with schools around potential pilot opportunities. They also spent time at Tū Ātea, using our space as they prepared to present Empathy at the 2025 Aotearoa AI Summit. Fast forward a year and Suede and fellow participant, CJ/Colin Murphy, are back at AUT South Campus for the Aotearoa AI Hackathon Festival 2026, but this time they’ve been invited back as judges. This year, Tū Ātea was part of delivering Atamai Iahiko - Te Ara Matihiko | Digital Futures, bringing people together to create AI solutions that matter, grounded in mātauranga Māori and Indigenous approaches. It’s awesome to see that journey come full circle, from developing an idea and taking out the win, to returning a year later to help encourage the next wave of innovators.

Jo joins from Fortysouth New Zealand, where, as Chief Operating Officer, she helped build and grow one of Aotearoa’s leading infrastructure businesses. She will lead Broadtech Limited, Johnston Dick & Associates Ltd (JDA) and TransWorks Ltd - the network services businesses within the wider Tū Ātea Group, bringing together more than 50 years of engineering heritage, national transmission capability and specialist data centre expertise. Together, their people support the networks, newsrooms, hospitals and industrial systems that help keep Aotearoa connected. Ka tū ātea, ka ora ai te iwi. Today is also an opportunity to acknowledge Merv Taylor, who has led Tū Ātea Network Services through an extraordinary period of change and helped carry its 50-year legacy into full Māori ownership. Four secondary school students recently completed Tū Ātea's two-week work experience programme, gaining practical skills and valuable insight into careers in technology, engineering and digital connectivity.   Across the two weeks, students took part in a range of hands-on learning opportunities that showcased different aspects of Tū Ātea's work. Activities included hydroponics, 3D printing and real-world technology applications, alongside exploring how internet infrastructure and connectivity keep communities connected across Aotearoa.   As part of the programme, the second group of students visited TransWorks Ltd, where they learned more about telecommunications infrastructure and the technology behind internet connectivity. They also wrapped up their placement by presenting what they had learned to Tū Ātea kaimahi Stevie Winikerei and Moresby Kainuku, who mentored them throughout their time with the organisation.   Stevie Winikerei says work experience is about helping students discover pathways they may not otherwise be exposed to.   "Work experience is about giving students real visibility of pathways into sectors they don't usually see, so they can make informed choices about their study and future careers."   Moresby Kainuku says creating opportunities like these is also about strengthening relationships with local schools and inspiring the next generation.   "We're stoked to build strong relationships with local schools and help advocate for careers in tech and engineering."   Through its work experience programme, Tū Ātea is helping rangatahi build confidence, develop practical skills and gain a better understanding of the opportunities available to them as they consider their future education and career pathways.

Hearing directly from our tauira reminds us why this kaupapa matters. Through the Tū Ātea Scholarships, Māori engineering students are being supported to focus on their studies, pursue their goals, and create pathways for themselves, their whānau and their communities.   The University of Waikato tauira, Curtis Williams (Te Arawa, Ngāti Mākino) and Jade Smith (Ngāi Tūhoe), have shared how this support has provided stability, reduced financial pressures, and strengthened their confidence as they continue their engineering journeys.   Ngā mihi nui ki a kōrua.
