+++𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀++ ------------------------ We were pleased to host the inaugural 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀 last Tuesday in Kathmandu on “𝗔𝗜 & 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗲𝘀.” The conversation examined a defining question of our time, as artificial intelligence and clean energy reshape the global economy, how can emerging economies ensure that these transformations create opportunity, capability, and prosperity at home - rather than deepen existing inequalities and dependencies? For Nepal, this question is especially urgent. With significant hydropower potential, a predominantly renewable electricity system, and a young generation eager to participate in the digital economy, Nepal has an opportunity to connect clean energy with innovation, industry, meaningful jobs, and long-term national capability. Our discussion also moved beyond technology and infrastructure into a more fundamental question: what kind of future do we want to build? AI and energy are not merely technical or economic issues. They raise philosophical questions about power, human agency, fairness, dignity, responsibility, and who gets to shape the future. As our Founder and President, Bhojraj Poudél, posed during the dialogue: as societies navigate rapid change, should progress be measured not only by what we can build, but also by whether it expands human possibility and shared prosperity? We were honored to be joined by Professor Brian Wong of The University of Hong Kong of Hong Kong and Bibek Raj K., Fellow at the Asia Global Institute. Their perspectives on global political economy, AI, energy security, infrastructure, investment, skills, and Nepal’s development choices made for a rich, timely, and thought-provoking dialogue. The transition away from fossil fuels starts with a shift in consumption. In 2023, fossil fuels supplied more than 80% of total primary energy, while electricity accounted for less than a quarter of final energy consumption. Under the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)'s revised 1.5°C Scenario, electricity rises to 35% of global energy consumption by 2035 with the increased electrification of transport, buildings, and industry. India has a “#NationalEnergyStorageMission” —but what exactly does that mean in 2026? The answer is more complicated than the name suggests. The story began with an Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE)-proposed mission in 2018, evolved into the National Mission on Transformative Mobility and Battery Storage in 2019, and has since expanded into a wider #BESSframework covering storage obligations, VGF, procurement, market participation, planning and technical regulation. Powering Bangladesh’s Future with Renewable Energy The Scaling Up Renewable Energy Project has added 338 megawatts of clean electricity to Bangladesh’s national grid. The project mobilized financing through public-private partnership and contributed to reducing 377,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year. Beyond the economy-wide job creation driven by reliable and affordable electricity, the project also directly generated jobs in construction, operations, and maintenance of the solar power plants.
