  • €20 billion. That’s how much the EU saved on gas imports between March and July, according to SolarPower Europe. EU’s dependence on foreign fossil fuel imports remains a crucial economic vulnerability. 85% of its fossil fuel supply is imported from outside the bloc, meaning the continent’s energy costs and economic stability are directly tied to markets it cannot control. Renewables play a decisive role in securing energy independence, but they depend on deploying sufficient flexibility at scale to fully support them. ⚖️ Demand Response is an immediate, zero-CAPEX revenue stream for large energy consumers that can be utilised immediately. 🔋 BESS offers the sub-second response times needed to handle frequency disturbances. We enable our customers to maximise revenue from both. Here’s how: https://sympower.net/

📣 #IndustrialFlexibility is not just a future opportunity, it is already happening today, where market conditions allow. Across Europe, a growing number of #EnergyIntensiveIndustries (EIIs) are participating in #FlexibilityMarkets while keeping production running smoothly. From paper mills and chemical plants to data centres, cement producers and water utilities, these real-world examples demonstrate how industrial #DemandSideFlexibility can create value for both industry and the power system. Our latest Smart Energy Talk explores how industrial flexibility works in practice and highlights examples featured in smartEn's new Collection of Best Practices for Flexible Energy-Intensive Industries. The publication brings together 21 case studies from across Europe, showing how different sectors are: ⚡ Reducing energy costs 💶 Creating new revenue streams where market conditions enable participation 🔋 Supporting #GridStability 🌱 Facilitating the integration of #RenewableElectricity These examples show that industrial flexibility is not a one-size-fits-all solution, but where the right market frameworks exist, it is already delivering measurable benefits. • In the Nordics, requests for grid capacity now exceed availability. Grid congestion has become such an issue that the four Nordic TSOs spoke with one voice: close cooperation is needed, and flexibility is crucial to connecting more demand. We couldn’t agree more, which is why the new, stricter connection rules are puzzling. The mechanisms meant to manage congestion increasingly restrict the very flexibility the TSOs say they need. Our Head of Public and Regulatory Affairs Mathilde Chareyron dives into this paradox in this month’s Energy Monthly. In this edition: 👉 Our recommendations for new market rules, and what a dynamic, value-based allocation would change; 👉 The case for flexibility first, curtailment last, and how to utilise the flexibility already available; 👉 As always, articles that caught our eyes from, plus two additional deep dives. • 📢 We are launching our Responsible Disclosure Programme: a clear, authorised channel for independent security researchers to report vulnerabilities they find in our systems. We operate within critical energy infrastructure, so the security of our digital systems is inseparable from the reliability of the grid itself. Independent researchers help us keep those systems strong, and reporting in good faith is covered by our safe harbour commitment. As Greece sits on over 4 GW of BESS pipeline, will its balancing markets experience the same rapid saturation we’ve seen in the Nordics? 🔋 The short answer is yes, but at a slower pace, simply because of the structural design of the Greek markets. Our Senior Portfolio Manager Konstantinos Souloutzidakis S. weighs in👇 "Nordic balancing is capacity-based. The fixed pool of capacity gets split between participants. Once it is split, the energy activation on top is close to zero. When volumes are tight and the market design is efficient, that pool fills fast; Finland saw products saturate in as little as three months. Greece operates differently: a second layer of highly activated energy sits on top of the capacity split. In Greece, we have one of the highest activation levels of balancing products, and we observe constant real-time balancing needs, with significant volumes activated in both directions. The market pays for energy actually delivered, which creates an important additional revenue stream, particularly for flexible assets. As for the already live subsidised BESS projects, they have little incentive to chase aggressive multi-market participation: with a contract for difference and government support behind them, many may sit safely on the wholesale side, which keeps the balancing market less crowded than it would otherwise be. The near-term read is genuinely strong. During the upcoming two-year window, a Battery Energy Storage System participating across markets could significantly benefit from balancing revenue opportunities."

  • In Greece, surely a sunny day means that the grid is fully powered by solar energy? Well, actually... ☀️ Renewable curtailment reached 7% in 2025, more than double the 2024 rate, and the current trajectory shows it could be even worse this year. The reason behind it is simple: the grid still can't make full use of the solar capacity already online. This creates a strange paradox where gas somehow still wins out, even when the sun is shining. In his latest article, our BESS Program Manager, Daniel Trueman, explains the structural reasons behind this bottleneck, what can be done to solve this conundrum, and what is likely to come next. Something is brewing in Germany’s energy markets, and all European BESS players should pay attention. Alongside the UK, Germany is Europe's most liquid and mature BESS market. This means that what happens to German price signals is the canary in the coal mine for every other markets. As more flexibility hits the grid, the spikes in the balancing and intraday market are gradually being smoothed out. The market is becoming more efficient, which means that the “easy money” is disappearing. In this new edition of our newsletter, our Head of Energy Markets and Trading, Jaap v Dijk, comments on a recent post from Julien Jomaux and shares our analysis on the strategies BESS owners must adopt to stay profitable. 👉 Subscribe to Energy Monthly to receive our insights: https://lnkd.in/ezscHMKq Happy reading!

  • “The EU is about to waste €1.2 trillion on grid infrastructure that we wouldn’t need to spend if we used energy in a smarter way.” That line from Greg Jackson at the McKinsey & Company Green Business Building Summit last week hits the nail on the head. The EU’s plan to spend €1.2 trillion on grid modernisation by 2040 is a massive statement of intent, but its strategy shows we’re at a crossroads. The EU cannot buy its way out of grid congestion simply by installing more cables: it needs to rethink its entire grid management system. For that reason, we need regulation changes to allow energy stakeholders like Octopus Energy, Kraken, and Sympower to optimise the infrastructure we already have, rather than defaulting to the slowest and most expensive option: burying more copper. The 21st-century challenge is digital orchestration, and the on-the-ground reality speaks for itself: → "Speed to Power" is the true bottleneck. For battery storage, data centres and renewables, the crisis is time, and the constraint is the grid. Projects can already get stuck for years waiting for a connection; this is only going to worsen with the forecasted 60% surge in electricity consumption by 2030. → We sit on a mountain of wasted renewable energy. In 2024 alone, Europe curtailed over 72 TWh of renewable power because our grids couldn't handle the surge. We switched off enough green energy to power the whole of Austria simply because we are not utilising all the flexibility sources already available. Flexibility is the backbone of our energy systems, and ultimately what will define Europe’s competitiveness. The Grids Package is a start, but what we really need is a regulatory framework that rewards flexibility and the intelligent use of existing assets, rather than one that defaults to simply burying more cables in the ground. #EnergyTransition #SmartGrid #EUPolicy #SpeedToPower #GridModernisation
