    De discussie over hoge brandstofprijzen gaat vaak over olie. Maar het echte probleem zit dieper. Europa is in toenemende mate afhankelijk geworden van buitenlandse grondstoffen én buitenlandse verwerkingscapaciteit. Daardoor zijn we kwetsbaar voor geopolitieke spanningen, verstoringen in de keten en prijsschommelingen. Het recente FD-artikel over de beperkte raffinagecapaciteit laat zien dat dit niet alleen een energievraagstuk is, maar vooral een strategisch vraagstuk. Diezelfde kwetsbaarheid zien we terug bij veel andere essentiële grondstoffen en materialen. Willen we als Europa onze concurrentiekracht behouden én onze strategische autonomie versterken, dan zullen we opnieuw moeten investeren in eigen industriële ketens. Niet alleen door duurzame grondstoffen te verbouwen, maar vooral door deze ook hier te verwerken tot hoogwaardige materialen voor onder andere de papier-, chemie-, bouw- en maakindustrie. Alleen zo creëren we economische waarde, kennis, werkgelegenheid en leveringszekerheid binnen Europa. Dat is precies de visie achter Miscancell . Met onze gepatenteerde bioraffinagetechnologie bouwen we aan een nieuwe industriële keten waarin lokaal geteelde Miscanthus wordt omgezet in hoogwaardige cellulose, lignine en andere biobased grondstoffen. Daarmee dragen we niet alleen bij aan een substantiële CO₂-reductie, maar versterken we ook de strategische onafhankelijkheid van Europa en de weerbaarheid van onze industrie. Voor mij is de energietransitie daarom veel meer dan verduurzaming alleen. Het is een kans om de industriële basis van Europa opnieuw op te bouwen, met innovatieve regionale ketens die economisch én maatschappelijk waarde creëren.     Miscancell welcomes this important study from the Bio-based Industries Consortium. It confirms what many innovative companies across Europe experience every day: the challenge is no longer technology, but creating the right market conditions for industrial scale-up. At Miscancell, we experience first-hand that market demand for high-quality bio-based materials is strong and continues to grow. Across multiple sectors, customers are actively seeking reliable, fossil-free alternatives to replace conventional fossil-based raw materials. The real challenge is not a lack of demand, but the transition from innovation to industrial production. Customers are understandably hesitant to commit to long-term offtake agreements until commercial-scale production capacity has been demonstrated. At the same time, investors typically require those same long-term offtake agreements before financing first-of-a-kind industrial facilities. This creates a classic chicken-and-egg dilemma that delays the scale-up of Europe's bio-based industries. Europe has successfully supported the development of breakthrough technologies. The next step is equally important: creating predictable demand through smart public procurement, binding bio-based content requirements and a regulatory framework that rewards the environmental value of renewable materials. Equally important is ensuring sufficient patient risk capital for first commercial production facilities, enabling innovative companies to bridge the gap between successful technology development and industrial deployment. At the same time, Europe should critically assess whether continued support mechanisms for fossil-based value chains remain appropriate while emerging bio-based industries are expected to compete without comparable market incentives. Rebalancing part of these support mechanisms towards renewable and circular industries would accelerate Europe's competitiveness, strengthen its strategic autonomy and significantly reduce industrial emissions. Europe already has the knowledge, the entrepreneurs and the technologies to lead the global bioeconomy. The market is ready. What is needed now is the policy framework and investment climate that enable Europe's bio-based innovators to build the first industrial plants, unlock long-term customer commitments and accelerate private investment. That is how Europe can turn technological leadership into industrial leadership.

    📢 📊 🌱Europe now has robust, comparable data on where bio-based industries can deliver strategic advantage, spanning chemicals, polymers, packaging and textiles. This marks a major milestone for the bioeconomy sector! For example, global bio-based plastics production capacity is forecast to roughly double, from 2.3 Mt in 2025 to about 4.7 Mt by 2030, and the European bioplastics market is expected to grow at 18.3% a year to 2030. The European chemicals industry generates around €655 billion in annual turnover, and Europe already leads in flax and hemp production for textiles. Our new study looks at how lead markets, where public policy deliberately shapes early demand to give industry the confidence to invest and scale, can be created in polymers and packaging, chemicals, and textiles, allowing Europe to take full advantage of this opportunity. 🏭 🌱 The study also highlights a key bottleneck: the environmental and strategic value of bio-based products is not reflected in the market, and without a policy signal for demand to form around, producers struggle to secure offtake and attract investment needed to scale. For Miscancell, Hungary has been an important part of our journey for more than 30 years through our founder Fred Hakvoort. Experiences like this remind us that regardless of sector or geography, businesses often face the same challenges — and can benefit enormously from sharing ideas and perspectives. We were pleased to be represented by Perger Barbara, who manages the international Miscanthus supply chain for Miscancell. For a company operating across borders and building sustainable value chains, these exchanges are invaluable for understanding market developments, strengthening partnerships and identifying new opportunities.     Strong relationships start with meaningful conversations As part of our “Breakfast at my company” event series, we paid a visit to Hunland Group. More than 20 participants from various industries joined us for a morning of networking, company insights and open discussions. Hosted by Suzanne Janssen, the program included an introduction to Hunland’s story and values with some personal stories from Jos Janssen, followed by a visit to our Alsórádapuszta farm and Felsővány dairy facility. Beyond showcasing their vertically integrated agricultural model, the most valuable part of the day may have been the exchange of ideas. The fantastic roundtable discussion was moderated by Albert Hulshof, Dutcham board member, where we covered topics like transportation challenges, alternative energy solutions, sustainability, recruitment trends, AI usecases and future business opportunities. Different sectors, shared challenges — and even more importantly, shared learnings. We truly appreciate that the Hunland management welcomed our group, shared insights into their amazing journey so far & future plans and provided the platform for this great conversation.   • Afgelopen week zijn we met het team Marcel van de Peppel Sten van Lanen Evelien Koenders Zacharie Flick een dag op pad geweest naar EmpackNL . Even uit de dagelijkse flow — samen rondlopen, gesprekken voeren en scherp krijgen waar we staan. Wat we zagen en voelden: de druk om single-use plastics uit te faseren is groot. Maar belangrijker: de bereidheid om écht te veranderen is er. De interesse in o.a. biobased hotmelt toepassingen en alternatieve vezels voor papier groeit zichtbaar. Voor ons een duidelijke bevestiging: we zitten met onze productontwikkeling – samen met sterke partners – op de juiste koers. En misschien nog wel het belangrijkste van de dag: de energie in het team.     Europa wil minder afhankelijk worden van fossiele en andere kritieke grondstoffen van buitenaf. Dan gaat het al snel over industrie, energie en geopolitiek. Maar er ligt ook een deel van het antwoord dichter bij huis, in biogrondstoffen. In ons nieuwste artikel kijken we naar de oproep van Nederlandse kennisinstellingen en de Federatie Bio economie Nederland voor een nationale strategie voor biogrondstoffen. Hun boodschap is helder. Wie serieus werk wil maken van strategische autonomie, moet biogrondstoffen ook serieus nemen, niet alleen voor energie, maar ook voor materialen, chemie en nieuwe verdienmodellen in de landbouw.
