Volunteers are the beating heart of WLIC. Such a big conference, with so many moving parts, would simply not be possible without their work. This year, more than 200 people offered their time to make sure WLIC ran smoothly. You saw them at registration, at the sessions, in the corridors, at the Cultural Evening, always ready to help delegates, always smiling and kind. Thank you, to all of you, for helping make #WLIC2026 so special. We hope to see you all again next year in London. And an extra shoutout to the communications team volunteers (Mirjana Nesic, Mila Baudouin, Brianna Henshaw, and Iouliani Theodosi), who produced most of the Instagram videos, contributed heavily to the daily recaps, and were our eyes and ears on the ground. Until next time!

It was a pleasure to have Jiho C. deliver the opening keynote at #WLIC2026! In case you missed it, the whole ceremony was recorded and is available on our Youtube channel 👇 https://lnkd.in/eECHPSYR
Yesterday, the 2026 International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) World Library and Information Congress (WLIC) opened in Busan, Korea, bringing together more than 3,000 library and information professionals from over 120 countries. As Co-Chair of the National Committee, I delivered the opening keynote, "AI Universal Basic Society: Redefining Intelligence Infrastructure for a Sustainable Future." The digital revolution dramatically expanded access to information. But access alone does not guarantee the ability to understand, interpret, and apply it. We have digitized information- but we have not democratized intelligence. As AI increasingly supports reasoning and judgment, a new divide is emerging: intelligence inequality. This is why I believe AI should not be a privilege available only to a few, but public infrastructure accessible to all. Libraries have a critical role to play in this transition-as trusted gateways to AI, centers for AI literacy, and stewards of local knowledge and languages. I was also struck by IFLA President Leslie Weir's call to "Be Bold"-for libraries not simply to adapt to change, but to become active agents in shaping a better future. Libraries were the public archetype of the information system. In the age of AI, they must become the public archetype of the intelligence system. #WLIC2026 #IFLA #AIUniversalBasicSociety #PublicIntelligence #Libraries

Take a good look at this photo: these are library leaders of the future! One of the best parts of #WLIC2026 is meeting its amazing grantees, 60 people from 40 countries across the world, all united by incredible passion for libraries, innovation, and education. This is what we love about our conference the most, making connections to last a lifetime, energising each other with new ideas, and starting to build the future of our profession together. If you see any of the grantees around at the conference, make sure you connect with them and ask them about their work, you will leave enriched!
