One of the perks of being a journalist is having the opportunity to meet people that you have only read about previously and – if things go well – getting a new understanding of what they do. Last week was one of these occasions when I interviewed Exor N.V. CEO John Elkann in Exor’s new office in Amsterdam for Handelsblatt. I was surprised by how open and authentic Elkann was – and how curious: The conversation started out by him interviewing me about Germany. Luckily, I managed to turn things around before time ran out. My main takeaway was Elkann’s positive assessment of Germany. Exor’s investment management company Lingotto invested in three German companies last year, and Elkann believes that Germany holds "enormous opportunities": "The technological capabilities are strong, and the ability to deliver great products is incredibly effective." Elkann thinks that Germany is well-equipped for the AI era: "The physical world will change even more than it has so far. We are leaving an era where the immaterial was more valuable and transitioning to one where the material will be. And a country like Germany has a huge advantage in this scenario." He also illustrated what he believes to be the way out of the crisis for European car-makers – "build cars in Europe that are affordable but at the same time attractive and fun" – and had a clear message for the EU Commission: "Today consumers are not accepting the top-down targets. We have to be careful to follow demand, not command."   Now, I’m curious to see if the Ferrari Luce will live up to his promises – and (another change of perspective here) to witness the Ferrari Hypersail cut through the waves.
