EFFECT Photonics has its origin in TU/e. It’s always great to meet all those talented students and listen to their great out-of-the box ideas.
It takes a village to raise a course. This year, we completed the second edition of our course, Strategic Management of Technology, at Eindhoven University of Technology. Our course is part of the Innovation Management Master's program at the School of Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences at TU/e. It is not always visible how much work goes into creating a course that is academically rigorous, engaging, and practically relevant. Particularly for a course where deep tech meets strategy, many different stakeholders need to contribute and align. In many ways, a small ecosystem is needed for such a course to take root and flourish. Most importantly, I want to thank our Master’s students. Their energy and proactive participation carried the course. Through consultancy projects for SMART Photonics and EFFECT Photonics, they translated theory into practice and developed strategic recommendations around the commercialization and scaling of integrated photonics. I am very grateful to our course team—Henk Slaats, Rudi Bekkers, Francesco Pasimeni, and Bob Walrave—and to our teaching assistants Max van den Broek, Dante Göbbels, (Stein) Steven Christiaan Fakkel, and Elona Lazaj. Together, we connected perspectives on strategy, strategic human capital, IP and licensing, organization design, acquisitions and divestitures, and competition in deep-tech contexts. Many industry experts enriched the course by openly sharing their knowledge and experience through expert lectures and podcasts, including Carol De Vries from PhotonDelta, Bart Verheijen from GuruScan, fast and fun knowledge network inventory, Elke den Ouden from LightHouse - Fellow at TU/e, Thijs Peeters from Oriole, Sebastiaan Huntjens from Biotech Booster, and Kees Gehrels from NXP Semiconductors. Their contributions helped students connect academic concepts to the strategic realities of technology development, commercialization, and scaling. A special thank you goes to our case companies and partners: EFFECT Photonics, with Jan-Laurens van der Steen and Eric Huang, and SMART Photonics, with Kamiel Dankers and Bram Smolenaars. They opened their organizations to our students, hosted a company visit, provided real strategic challenges, offered consultation and feedback, and engaged directly with the students’ final recommendations. Finally, excellent education also depends on substantial support behind the scenes. Many thanks to our ESA colleagues Nicky Marinus, Irene Blankers, Britt Verstappen, Michelle Verrijth, as well as CSA, for helping us organize and deliver the course. I am also very grateful to Bianca Van Broeckhoven and Astrid Baltus, our secretaries at the Innovation, Technology Entrepreneurship & Marketing (ITEM) Group, for their invaluable organizational and administrative support throughout the course. Creating and delivering a course is always a collective effort—and, in this case, perhaps a small ecosystem in its own right. Thank you all for making it possible!

Today, our students from the course #Strategic #Management of #Technology at Technische Universiteit Eindhoven visited EFFECT Photonics and SMART Photonics at High Tech Campus Eindhoven. A great opportunity to show how “deep tech meets strategy” in practice. A big thank you to Eric Huang and Jan-Laurens van der Steen from EFFECT Photonics, and Bram Smolenaars and Kamiel Dankers from SMART Photonics for opening their doors and sharing their expertise with our students. The visit provided students with a fascinating behind-the-scenes look into the integrated photonics ecosystem in Brainport Eindhoven. We discussed the transition from SMART’s current 4-inch production line toward future 6-inch manufacturing together with TNO, the importance of indium phosphide technology, and the challenges of heterogeneous integration between indium phosphide and silicon. Students also experienced the realities of semiconductor manufacturing firsthand: cleanrooms, lithography, plasma etching, grey space versus white space, and even why yellow light is used to prevent unwanted chemical reactions on wafers. Beyond the technology itself, discussions also focused on scaling deep-tech ventures, the strategic importance of design and packaging, acqui-hiring, and the growing demand for industry-ready engineering talent. Exactly the kind of ecosystem-based and practice-oriented learning we aim for at Technische Universiteit Eindhoven — connecting strategy, technology, manufacturing, and innovation ecosystems in one of Europe’s leading deep-tech regions. Together with Henk Slaats and Rudi Bekkers from Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences at TU/e. This course is part of the Innovation Management Master's program, in which our Innovation, Technology Entrepreneurship & Marketing (ITEM) Group is responsible for several courses and curriculum development. #IntegratedPhotonics #DeepTech #Strategy #InnovationManagement #BrainportEindhoven #Photonics #TUe #HighTechCampus #SMARTPhotonics #EFFECTPhotonics #IndustrialEngineering #Semiconductors
