Nancy Lee Badger Presents Author Heidi Vanlandingham

Please help me welcome a fellow author with Soul Mate Publishing. Her book intrigued me and I jumped at the chance to host her and her work. Welcome!

Thanks, Nancy. This series has been a long time coming, and I am so thankful and really, really excited about the recent release of The Curse That Binds, my 3rd book published by Soul Mate Publishing. It has been a rollercoaster since last July when book #1, In Mage We Trust came out. I’ve loved working with my editor, Char, who helped me make these books amazing.

Book Blurb

Released from the containment spell trapping her in a diary, Cassia Kallias finds her family embroiled in a war with the egotistical god who spelled her there, but Zeus still covets the power he senses deep within her.

As the demon king, Lucien struggles to contain the chaos spiraling out of control throughout Dark World, but when he accidentally hits the diary of judgments with his demon flame, he releases Cassia from her curse.

Reunited with the daughter she was forced to leave, Cassia must come to grips with all she has lost, accept her growing feelings for Lucien, and learn to control her new powers to defeat Zeus to save Dark World and those she loves.

PG Excerpt

I couldn’t have stopped the shiver if I’d wanted to. And believe

me, I didn’t. The man’s sensual fingers stroked down the front of my cover and along my spine like a lover’s caress. The path sizzled and my pages burned in delicious agony. What I wouldn’t give to have my girly bits back.

Oh, my soul. I shuddered. This was the closest I’d been to having an orgasm in . . . I tried to think back to the last time I’d actually had one. I’d just found out I was pregnant. Before I could tell Zander, I received the summons from the Watcher King and ran away . . .

I snorted. Way too long if I can’t remember the last time I had sex.

Come on, do it again, I begged, as his finger rose a few inches, but as it began to lower, so did my hope. No. Not there. Don’t touch the lock—ohhh.

If I had a foot, I would’ve stomped it in frustration. Look Mister, either raise me upright so I can see who you are or touch me in the right spots.

Sadly, he didn’t do either. Instead, I found myself dizzyingly whipped around and shoved into a tight, dark space. Unfortunately, whoever this imbecile was, he put me in backward, and I now faced the room behind him.

My queasiness grew from the person’s side-to-side motion, so I switched my vision off. As horrible dizziness assailed me, I flipped it back on again. I bit back my groan, forgetting no one could hear me. I was thankful I had no stomach contents to upchuck.

Nancy Lee Badger Presents Author Iuliana Foos

Author Iuliana Foos stopped by to share the release of her latest book that was released on April 11th by Soul Mate Publishing (my new publisher!) Take it away!

Hello, and thank you for hosting me today.

The first idea for Bloodline Origins sparked in my mind thirty-four years ago. I was a teenager, visiting Dracula’s Castle, back home, in Romania. Once I got over the cold stone walls, dark corridors and dingy rooms, my imagination went in overdrive. It was the first time I started to speculate how the world would be if vampires were real.

I strongly disagreed in my mind with the concepts I witnessed in movies and books for the last three decades.

Just like humans, my vampires are good and bad, driven by different motives. Some are creatures of the night, some blend in with us, unbothered by daylight.

The origin of vampires I always thought it to be out of this world. I never believed in curses or undead, but I was always fascinated with life beyond our loved blue planet.

So I combined the two and it is why vampires in my ‘Bloodline’ trilogy are of alien descent. Some of them are bloodthirsty, some protect humans, but they all fall in love and live lives led by passion.

Back Cover Blurb:
Determined to turn her fantasy into reality, Ana starts her journey to become a vampire. Along the way, she learns the truth about their secret society, discovers her prestigious bloodline and falls in love.

Not all vampires are accepting of humans and war looms in the shadows. An ancient tome reveals the vampires’ alien descent and sparks war.

An army bent on eradicating her coven’s existence threatens her new world. Survival or annihilation will be in Ana’s hands.

Excerpt from SMOLDER

My proof copies recently arrived and hubby and I have been reading through them, catching and correcting a few typos, and hoping that they are ready for release day on March 13th. The ebook of SMOLDER, the third book in my Clan of Dragons series, is available for pre-order at Amazon. A big Thank You to those of you who have pre-ordered it!

To those of you not familiar with my series,
here is an excerpt from SMOLDER:

Fiona straightened her server’s attire, as well as her cap, and made her way into the tavern. The dining hall had emptied, somewhat, but Dougal leaned against the counter and glared at her. Had he been waiting for her all this time? When he marched in her direction, with one hand on the pommel of his sheathed sword, she swallowed.
He was magnificent, with his long hair in an unruly tumble over his shoulders, and his dark blue eyes glaring at her. His wide shoulders moved in a fluid motion, as if bone, flesh, and muscles worked in harmony. Even his knees were muscular, and she wished he was still naked. He was the most beautiful creature she had ever beheld. As he walked closer, he didn’t say a word, but glowered at her.
“I need to find your brother, Evan.” Before she could explain, he cupped her chin, and pressed his lips to hers. His hand circled her waist, and he drew her body close. Surrounded by his heat, and the scents of human musk and smoldering cinders, Fiona melted beneath his kiss. When he lifted his mouth mere inches away, she sighed, while he sniffed her.
“You taste delicious, lass, like apples and spice. I wish to explore every inch of your lovely form, but why be you looking for Evan? I can give you anything you desire, if you only ask.”
What she desired was to find her friend Cliona, after she gave Evan the good news, but her bones were as shifting as the sands, and she took a moment to formulate a sentence.
“Sir, I need to find Evan. I have news. He might wish to tell you that your niece or nephew will soon enter the world, but we should leave that up to him, aye?”
Dougal released her, and stepped back. “What? When? Who said?”
“Vika has asked me to bring her husband to her. She be in great pain. Can you point me in his direction?”
“I feared the babe would come too soon. If not for this silly celebration, Vika would be safe in her cave, in her own bed, not surrounded by strangers.” He turned away.
    In her cave?
As he exited the tavern, she followed, quickening her stride to keep up with his long legs and determined pace. She could only assume he could fly faster, but she doubted he’d reveal himself to the villagers by sprouting wings. They rounded the fire pit, and circled the crowd. Most of the humans sounded gay and happy, or in their cups.
Cliona had warned her about humans and their spirits. Ale flowed freely in the tavern, but whisky was the true demon. She couldn’t imagine Dougal inebriated, but why had he kissed her so blatantly? What else might he do, if she did not keep her distance?
A shiver ran along her spine, as she hurried after him. He paused at a vendor’s cart, and the man pointed down the lane. He took off, nearly at a run, and Fiona gasped. She settled a hand on her middle and followed until he entered the blacksmith shop.
She stopped just outside the door, bent over at the waist, and tried to breathe. When two brown leather boots appeared, she straightened. The human in front of her was Dougal’s twin except for the coppery hair and amber eyes. When they flashed like molten flames, she swallowed.
    Another dragon.

Nancy Lee Badger Presents Sorchia Dubois and Zoraida Grey and the Family Stones

I have welcomed Sorchia Dubois to my blog so she can share her book, to be released October 28, 2016. This is my way of paying-it-forward to other authors.

Take it away, Sorchia!

Zoraida Grey and the Family Stones is Book 1 in a 3-Book romantic suspense series. Book 2, Zoraida Grey and the Voodoo Queen, and Book 3, Zoraida Grey and the Pictish Runes, will be released in 2017. The three books follow Zoraida from what begins as a relatively simple quest to pinch a healing crystal to a journey of self-discovery and adventure. She vows to put her love life on hold until she achieves her goal, but the seductive spells of the beguiling Logan witches may be too powerful to resist.

Book Blurb
Granny’s dying, but Zoraida can save her with a magic crystal of smoky quartz. Too bad the crystal is in Scotland––in a haunted castle––guarded by mind-reading, psychopathic sorcerers.

Getting inside Castle Logan is easy. Getting out––not so much. Before she can snatch the stone, Zoraida stumbles into a family feud, uncovers a wicked ancient curse, and finds herself ensorcelled by not one but two handsome Scottish witches. Up to their necks in family intrigue and smack-dab in the middle of a simmering clan war, Zoraida and her best friend Zhu discover Granny hasn’t told them everything.

Not by a long shot.

Excerpt from Zoraida Grey and the Family Stones

“Your Granny taught you a great deal, I’ll wager.” His brows knit together. The suspicion returns to his eyes.
    “She taught me enough.”
    “Are you sure?”
“What do you mean by that?”
“I mean Castle Logan is not what you expected, is it? You’re out of your depth here.”
“I wouldn’t say that.” I resolve to stand firm, though he is so close I can feel his warmth and smell the musk of sweat and dirt on his clothes.
“Don’t pretend to be something you are not. We scare you. Admit it.” He scowls down at me.
“And I seem to scare you and maybe even Michael.” I scowl right back at him. “I don’t know why––since I am only here on vacation.”
Shea’s lips curl in a sneer. “Michael and I disagree about many things, but we are in total agreement about you. You are hiding something. Rest assured we’ll discover what it is in short order.”
“Everybody in this bloody castle is hiding something. Why should I be any different? It’s not like I killed somebody.”
Too late, I remember Miss Watson’s certainty that Shea killed the old laird. It’s never clever to bait an accused murderer. I move away but he grasps my arm, his eyes black with anger.
“You didn’t waste time learning all there is to learn from town gossip. Consider this. If I could kill my own uncle—toss him over the side of the tower and watch him break apart––what do you suppose I could do to you?”

Nancy Lee Badger Interviews Author Sarah Hoss

Sarah Hoss stopped by to share some intimate details about her, and her latest book. HIGHLAND SAVIOR is a historical paranormal romance and was released on July, 22, 2015. Please tell us more! Did you have several manuscripts finished before you sold? If so, did you send them out yourself?

Sarah- No, I had two manuscripts finished and signed them within a month of each other. But, from the time I started writing to the time I signed a contract was 7 years. I had to learn the industry and the trade first. I sent them out myself.

Nancy- What sort of promo do you do? Do you have help?

Sarah- I have bookmarks and magnets I like to give out. I also have lovely people like you who host me on their blogs.

Nancy- Are you a member of any writing organizations and, if so, have they helped?

Sarah- I am a member of RWA, Crossroads of America Romance Writers, and Celtic Hearts Romance Writers.  Each organization has been very helpful as they contain such wonderful and knowledgeable people.

Nancy- Will you share some encouraging words for authors still struggling for that first contract?

Sarah- Be patient. This is not an industry to rush. It takes time to make your book the best it can be.

Nancy- Please Share three fun facts about you that most people don’t know.

1) I’m a “bonus” baby. My siblings are 13, 12, and 7 years older than me.
2) I danced in the Pan Am Opening Ceremonies held in Indianapolis, Indiana as a teenager.
3) I love camping, Christmas, and the smell of burning leaves.

Nancy- What’s next for you?

Sarah- I am working on the fjurd brothers story.

BOOK BLURB
Two Lifetimes – Two Hearts – One future, if they can only survive the past.

Hamish Macpherson is surrounded by turmoil: an arsonist is on the loose, he’s in the middle of a feud with a local clansman, and just as he’s trying to save his sister from a burning cottage, he appears in the middle of a foreign living room three hundred years past his own time.

Gillian Meadows thinks she’s self-sufficient and can handle anything until she witnesses a murder in the alley next to an Olde City tavern. In a desperate run to escape being the next victim, she stumbles into a wiccan store and accepts the help of the shop owner. Little does she know that one mis-spoken word of a simple incantation can change everything.

Neither world is safe, but Hamish can better protect Gillian if he returns to his own time. Gillian has no choice but to go with him if she wants to escape the danger closing in. Little do they know that his past could be the biggest threat of all to their future.

Excerpt from Highland Savior
“Cadal gu sèimh, aghráidh.” He closed his eyes as a tear slid down his cheek. Sleep in peace, love.
Hamish rolled to his stomach and gathered his footing. This couldn’t be happening. Athol’s hand snaked out and gripped his wrist.
“I’ll send my daughter to fetch Callum and stay with their children. He should be here.”
Hamish nodded his head and watched as Athol ran off toward his daughter. Quickly, his focus turned back to where the house had once stood. How could this have happened? How did this nightmare become his reality? He covered his eyes with his fists and rocked back and forth, crying. His shoulders shook with it. His anger and sadness knew no bounds. He stood, wobbly on his feet at first but found his footing, and watched the cottage burn. His mouth was drawn tight and he breathed deeply threw his nose, making short, loud breaths. Friends and relatives stood also, watching, buckets of water still in their hands, as the boards gave way to the fire and broke, caving in. Embers flew into the sky like fireflies dancing in the breeze.
Two thoughts came to his mind at once- Alexander and James. He didn’t think he was strong enough to tell them, but he knew he had to before they found out from someone else. Where was James?
As if thinking his named had conjured him, James ran to Hamish.
“Brother, tis sorry that I am to hear of yer home and fields.” He pulled back and stared Hamish in the eyes. “We will help ye rebuild and get back on yer feet.” He searched his brother. “Are ye injured then?”
His heart stopped beating for a moment. He didn’t know.
His throat felt thick and he tried to swallow. He needed to  gather the courage needed to tell James the ugly truth. He rubbed a hand over his mouth then brought it to the back of his neck.
He took a deep breath and blew it out. Tears welled in his eyes and he wiped them away with the back of his hand. “Brother,” he coughed, his throat hurt and his voice was strained, “Margaret was in the house.”
“Did she become injured? Is she all right?” James searched the clearing for her.
Hamish closed his eyes for a moment and let out the breath he had been holding. He opened and closed his fists over and over. “Nay. She’s gone.” Fresh tears flooded his eyes and for a moment he couldn’t see. Margaret was the gentlest person he knew and he loved her dearly. James stood staring at him for a moment before turning his gaze to the burnt rubble of his home. He let out a roar then broke down and Hamish held him. Together, they cried for the loss of the sister they loved.
James and Hamish rode their horses in silence to Alexander’s farm. Neither wanted to give the news alone.
They found their brother in the pasture grooming a new colt. The saw the excitement on Alexander’s face as he spotted them and watched as he ran over to the fence where they tied their horses.
“James and Hamish, how good it is to see ye.”
They glanced at each other and Hamish waited as James, being the oldest, spoke.
“Where is Marlana?”
Alexander glanced around the yard before remembering. “She went to the woods to check the rabbit traps.”
“We need to talk to ye.” Hamish and James jumped down from the backs of their horses and led them to the fence to tie them up.
Alexander followed, then took a big sniff of the air. “Why do the two of ye smell like a campfire?” He studied them, tugged on Hamish shirt where the ends were frayed and burnt. “Ye look like shit. What’s happened?”
The two brothers peered at each other for a moment, then turned their attention to their brother.
James moved toward Alexander. “Hamish’s home was set afire and burnt to the ground this evening.”
Alexander stole glances between the two of them in disbelief. “I’m sorry to hear it.” He reached out a hand and gripped his brother’s shoulder.
James placed his hands on his hips and glanced down at the ground for a moment. There was no easy way to say what needed to be said, but he must. “Alexander.” He chanced a glance his brother. Anguish etched his features, his heart breaking all over again. His sister, beautiful, sweet Margaret. A tear slid down his cheek. He stared at the heavens, praying for the strength to so this.
Alexander turned to face him. Confusion and then fear flashed in his eyes.
“Margaret was at Hamish’s home. We couldna get there in time to save her.” He choked on the last sentence. His throat felt thick, his head ached.
“What?” Alexander shook his head. “What are ye saying? She’s dead?”
“Aye,” Hamish said.

New Release: DRAGON Bites, a collection of ...Myths?

For centuries, myths were often considered an aspect of folklore, but not all. Mythology might include the belief in the supernatural, where as folklore and folk tales derived when people had the need to explain mysterious events. Pre-Christianity might have had a hand in old world myths and folklore. A people’s yearning to believe in the hereafter, or in some type of entity, lived on through stories passed generation to generation. Once Christianity became widespread, mythological creatures, such as the “Fairies”, faded away.

Dragons are myths, some say, while others still ‘believe’. Do you?

Book Blurb

This book is a collection of three similarly themed novellas previously published as separate ebooks by Nancy Lee Badger. DRAGON’S CURSE, set on the Scottish island of Staffa in the late 16th century, features a young man cursed to transform into dragon at inopportune times and the woman he protects. SOUTHERN FRIED DRAGON pairs a Scottish dragon-turned woman and a federal soldier at Ft. Sumter on the eve of Civil War. DRAGON IN THE MIST is a contemporary love story on the shores of Loch Ness, which is a short story that won 1st Place in its category in the 2012 Self-Published Stars Contest.

Nancy Lee Badger Interviews author Kaylie Austen

Joining me is author Kaylie Austen. Her book, Hellhound, is a paranormal mystery/suspense and was released on May 1st.

Welcome Kaylie! I am glad you could stop by during your whirlwind of a blog tour! Please tell my readers a little bit about your book.

Thank you for having me! Hellhound is the story of Selene, aka the Hellhound, and her struggle with breaking away from her pre-ordained life. She’s a Mythian, a direct descendant of Greek Gods, and her powerful bloodlines dictate that she marry another firstborn of Elders to become part of the ruling council that will one day take the world back from mortals. The problem? She hates being told what to do, when to do it, and who to marry. She’d rather cave into her darker side than to be brought into the light, literally (she absorbs power through the moonlight while the Elders soak energy from the sun).

Selene takes the bold step of mating with a tracker, a class beneath her. Demetrius shows her the world and how to hunt. With her prized weapon, he names her the Hellhound to the clans of Mythos. Things are shaky, but Selene’s entire world turns upside down when her father and intended, Nathanial, are found dead. All eyes focus on Demetrius. The evidence mounts against him. And, since Selene is now a huntress, the council gives her the order to bring in her accused lover. A race against time to find the truth, the Hellhound must work quickly to outwit super-human archers, shape-shifting sentinels, the cerebral chamber of the muses, and a deceitful council before she’s forced to annihilate her lover.
I can relate to 'breaking away' in order to be happy. Describe the genre of this particular title, and is this the only genre you write in?
Hellhound is a blend of several genres: Paranormal, mystery, suspense, and romance. I also write dark fantasy, science fiction, and contemporary in both adult and YA.
What is your writing routine like?
I don’t have a routine, per say. Ideas flood into my head, storylines form, dialogue crops up, and I have to get it all down before it consumes me. It’s actually quite hectic in my head during a writing episode. I type fast, between 500-10,000 words a day, usually in the afternoon and evening. I spend weeks on editing, revising before sending the manuscript to beta readers. I’ll obsess a little longer before sending it out, and even then, I always find something to change or tweak with every read thereafter.
I type fast, but spelling and grammer cause headaches for me! Having achieved your goal to be a published author, what is the most rewarding thing?
To have people tell me, or write reviews, about how much they loved the story. That’s a great feeling to know someone enjoyed my work.
I agree! Will you share some encouraging words for authors still struggling for that first contract?
I know it sounds generic and every author says it, but it’s true. Never give up. If you try to give up writing, and the words keep coming, then you know you’re destined to be a writer. During all this writing, read and learn the craft. Always continue to grow.
What’s next for you?
This month I will be participating in an exciting month-long blog tour with giveaways, although truth be told, I’m a bit tempted to keep those prizes for myself. As far as novels go, I have a deliciously disturbing YA dark fantasy coming out later this year.
BOOK BLURB
Selene is the Hellhound, a powerful and ruthless descendant of the Greek gods. She is bound by tradition and tied by bloodlines to lead her people against the mortals. Although she is arranged to marry Nathanial, she falls for Demetrius, the self-professed Black Angel, and things take a bitter twist. When she stumbles across the corpses of her father and Nathanial, all eyes move in on Demetrius. Selene must take the assignment to hunt down her accused lover. Facing the untrustworthy cerebral chamber, powerful shape-shifting sentinels, superhuman archers, and a deceitful Council, the Hellhound must work quickly to uncover the truth before she is forced to annihilate her lover.
Excerpt from Hellhound
I stepped over the threshold. The doors closed behind me with an echo that bounced against thick interior walls. I stood as close to the doors as possible in the empty, twelve-foot, circular chamber. The smooth, metal walls were bare, dark. One, small light to my left illuminated the room, and cast odd shadows in the distance.
The ancient muses lived in our domicile, trapped in this chamber for the purpose of the Council. They materialized from thin air. Dense, colored particles gave the appearance of solid flesh cloaked in cloth, similar to a hologram.
I hated giving them my memories. No one should know them except me, but relinquishing them proved I was not a criminal.
The cloth-like façade covered their faces. The woman in the middle stepped forward.     “Welcome, Selene.”
“We recognize you anywhere,” another spoke.
Their majestic voices echoed, creating a haunting ripple of sound.
I swallowed. “Let’s get this over with.”
All three smirked and rushed into me at once. I gasped as their force slammed me against the door. For the most part, they dissipated into air, but a small portion passed through my skull and entered my brain. I dropped to my knees and cradled my head between curled fingers. With my teeth clenched, jaw tight, and eyes pressed, I rocked on my haunches.
The muses moved across my thoughts, creating a vicious headache as they replicated memories and stored them in the chamber.
My body heat rose. Sweat beads tickled as they slid down my flesh. My breathing escalated until my lungs hurt, my chest burned. I thought my head might explode, as if my brain throbbed, pounded against bone. Heavy breathing turned into muffled whimpers. Panting turned into hissing. Just when I lost self-control, just before screaming, the pain vanished. The muses disappeared and took with them everything I knew.
