For those that know little of Rick Perry who is running for the office of President here is a little insight to the man.  His experience  was not being a community organizer.

Actually, today, A&M has grown to one of the top 10 largest undergraduate enrollments in the country. However, when I went there from ' 65 - ' 69, we only had 11,000 men, and a few (>50) female student wives, and daughters of professors, etc.). In the Fall of 1968 (my Senior Year), a punky, slow talking kid from central west Texas enrolled in Texas A&M and immediately was liked by all the Freshmen in his class! He was liked so much that he was nominated and elected President of the Freshman Class. Later on, in 1971 he was elected to one of the highest honors they can bestow on a student at A&M, that of Head Aggie Yell Leader (All Male schools don't do "Cheers" for Cheerleaders, they do "Yells" for the six elected Yell Leaders). When he graduated (which he did in the normally allotted four years, even with all his extra-circular Yell Leader travels to all Football, Basketball, Baseball, Track and Field, and even Conference Golf Tournaments), he earned a Commission in the United States Air Force and started Flight Training shortly after Graduation. Upon Honor Graduation from Flight Training, he was assigned to C-130 Hercules Transports and sent straight to Viet Nam, where he flew Co-Pilot to one of my best friends at A&M. He said the kid was the most dependable and down to earth pilot with whom he'd flown, and recommended him for Captain of his own C-130. That handsome, very likable, down-to-earth kid was Rick Perry, and I've known him since he was an 18 year old Aggie Freshman. He was known to me that entire year as "Fish Perry"!!
Is he perfect? Hell no, who is? In 11 years as Governor, he has made three MAJOR "Bone-headed" decisions, but when yours truly and many other Texas Republicans called his hand on them, he didn't pull an 'Obama' and proceed to try and ram it down our throats, anyway.........I He re-thought his position and reversed course! That's wisdom!
Is he smart, and does he have good common sense? The Air Force doesn't put idiots in charge of $20 Million Aircraft and 8 crew members! He has an exemplary Military record! And, he can charm the horns off a Buffalo!
And, he has never lost an election, so he must be a pretty damn good politician, as well! It remains to be seen how he handles the national media "Gotcha Question Goons", but I think he'll do pretty well!
By the way, my Classmate who used to fly with Rick in that first C-130 went on to become a Captain for United Airlines and he continued to live in Abilene, TX. He contracted Cancer and died in 2002, and at his Funeral Graveside Service, now Governor Rick Perry arranged for a four aircraft flight of C-130s in tight formation to do a fly-by over the Cemetery, at an altitude of 300 feet, just as Taps were ending and the 21 gun salute was starting. Just as those thundering four engine turbo-props got overhead, the lead aircraft pulled up abruptly into the missing man maneuver. Son, there wasn't a dry eye at the Cemetary! The man has got a heart of gold!
That's who Rick Perry is, and I'm proud to recommend him to you! Beryl

Who Is Rick Perry?
Don't come after my dog, he warned them.
He is a fifth generation Texan, the son of hardscrabble west Texas tenant farmers; Democrats but conservatives through and through. He grew up in a farm town too small to be on the state map. Life was so hard that he was six years old before his house had indoor plumbing. His mother sewed his clothes, including the underwear he wore to college.

He is an Eagle Scout. After Paint Creek High School , he attended Texas A&M, graduated, and was commissioned into the Air Force where he became a C-130 pilot.

Now 61 years old, he has won nine elections to four different offices in Texas state government. In the first three elections he ran as a Democrat then switched to the Republican Party. He is currently the 47th governor of Texas , a position he has held for 11 years, the longest tenure of any governor in the nation. He has been elected governor three times, the first ever to have that honor.

He has never lost an election.

Rick Perry was the Lieutenant Governor to whom Governor George Bush handed over the office after winning the 2000 Presidential election. Since then, Perry won gubernatorial elections in 2002, 2004, and 2010, the last time by 55% against a field consisting of a Democrat, a Libertarian, a Green Party, and an Independent. He even beat out Kay Bailey Hutchison, long time popular Texas GOP Senator.

Since he became its Governor, Texas , a right-to-work state (no unions to speak of) that taxes neither personal income nor capital gains has added more jobs than the other 49 states combined. In the last two years, low taxes and little regulation led his state to create 47% of all jobs created in the entire nation. Five of the top ten cities with the highest job growth in the nation are in Texas . People follow jobs, so in the last four years for which data are available, Texas led every state in net interstate migration growth.

Perry signed ground-breaking tort reform and medical litigation rules that caused malpractice insurance rates to fall. Some 20,000 doctors have since moved to Texas .

Texas boasts 58 of the Fortune 500 companies, more than any other state. Since May 2011, Texas resumed its pre-recession employment levels. Only two other states and the District of Columbia have done that.

Texas ships 16% of the nation's export value. California trails at 11%. Of the 70 companies that have fled California so far in 2011, 14 relocated in Texas .

In this year's Texas legislative season, Perry got most of what he wanted. With no new taxes, a fiscally lean state budget was passed leaving $6 billion in a rainy day fund even as other states around the country struggled to balance budgets and avoid more deficit borrowing. A voter ID bill passed that was designed to prevent ballot box fraud and illegal voting. A bill passed that makes plaintiffs pay court costs and attorney fees if their suits are deemed frivolous.

Perry scored points even in his legislative failures. He failed to get sanctuary cities banned -- Texas towns in which police cannot question detainees about their immigration status. The blame fell on the legislature. Perry also failed to get a so-called anti-groping bill passed that would put Transportation Security Administration agents in prison if they touch the genitals, anus, or breasts of passengers in a pat down. Federal officials threatened to halt all flights out of Texas airports and the bill died in special session. That endeared Texans even more to TSA employees living in Texas .

Perry jogs daily in the morning. He has no bodyguard with him, but his daughter's dog runs by his side and he carries a laser-guided automatic pistol in his belt. Last year while jogging in an undeveloped area, a coyote paralleled his jogging route, eyeing his dog. He drew his pistol and killed the animal with one shot, leaving it where it fell. "He became mulch," Perry said. Animal rights groups protested, but Perry shrugged it off. "Don't come after my dog," Perry warned".

Recently, Obama asked Perry to delay the July 7 execution of Humberto Leal in order to comply with the International Court of Justice in The Hague and the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations. Perry refused. Therefore Obama asked the US Supreme Court to delay the execution because it would damage US foreign relations. The Court refused 5-4 and Perry ordered the execution to go forward as scheduled. Over the howls of diplomats, politicians, and the UN, Leal was administered a lethal injection at 6:20 p.m. Before he died, he admitted his guilt and asked for forgiveness.

The case has special implications for Perry, who is considering a run for the presidency in 2012. Even his critics resent federal interference in a Texas execution, which is related to a state, not a federal, crime; an alcohol and drug-fueled rape and murder 17 years ago by an illegal whose family brought him into the country 35 years ago as a child. The interference hinges not on the man's guilt, which Leal advocates acknowledged, but on a technicality: failure to inform Leal that he could have gotten legal representation from the Mexican consulate in lieu of the court-appointed attorneys who represented him. Independent Texans saw Obama's interference as another intrusion of federal power into the affairs of a state, which could cost Obama support in other states.

Needless to say, Perry is a hard-edged conservative and a ferocious defender of 10th Amendments rights (The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.) an explicit restriction of the federal government to only those powers granted in the Constitution. Perry accuses the federal government, especially the Obama administration, of illegal overreach.

Perry said no thanks to the feds whose stimulus offered taxpayer dollars for education and unemployment assistance. The strings on free money from Washington , he said, would restrict Texas in managing its own affairs. Perry even depleted all state funds to fight recent wildfires before asking Washington for disaster relief. His request has been ignored, which comes across as an unvarnished federal power play, further pitting Perry and Texans against the federal government.

Fw: Fwd: A Pundit's thoughts / True Grit....................

“Rooster” Cogburn for President

By Paul R. Hollrah

My wife does not often make suggestions for what I should write about, but today was an exception.  As we watched a Fox News update on the field of Republican hopefuls for the 2012 presidential nomination, she said, “You know what we need to defeat Obama in 2012?  We need someone with “true grit,” and we still don’t have a frontrunner who fits that description.”  I could not agree more.

According to the official storyline in the movie True Grit, 14-year-old farm girl Mattie Ross arrived in Fort Smith, Arkansas, determined to track down and capture a former hired hand, Tom Chaney, who had murdered her father.  To aid in her quest, she hired the roughest, toughest man she could find, a one-eyed U.S. marshal with "true grit" named Reuben J. “Rooster” Cogburn, to track Chaney into Indian Territory and bring him to justice.

Almost every moviegoer over age sixty will remember and appreciate the original version of the movie, starring John Wayne, which opened in movie theaters across the country in June 1969.  Wayne won both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award as Best Actor for his portrayal of the one-eyed “Rooster” Cogburn.

But Wayne’s portrayal of the curmudgeonly lawman was typical John Wayne.  He swaggered, he cursed, and he swilled a little whiskey, but he came off looking more like a kindly father-figure catering to a strong-willed daughter or granddaughter.  It was not until 2011, forty-one and a half years later, when the remake opened in theaters across the country, that moviegoers finally got to see what “true grit” really looks like.  That was when actor Jeff Bridges reprised the role of “Rooster” Cogburn.

Thinking back on the Bridges performance, I can fully appreciate that “true grit” is the single most important quality the 2012 Republican candidate must have.  “Nice,” “accommodating,” and “bipartisan” simply won’t cut it against a man who compares well to Lucifer himself, so no George H.W. Bush, Bob Dole, George W. Bush, or John McCain lookalikes need apply.  And just in case some might be tempted to think that former Florida governor Jeb Bush might be a welcome change of pace, let’s just assume that the further we wade out into the Bush gene pool the shallower it gets.  Some may be willing to gamble on a third Bush in the White House, but I’m not.

So if our 2012 job description excludes “nice guys” and candidates who are anxious to “reach across the aisle” to accommodate Democrats, who do we eliminate?

For starters, we can eliminate former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty, former Utah governor Jon Huntsman, and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney.  Each time I see Pawlenty he seems to automatically morph into the children’s TV icon, Mr. Rogers, dressed in his cardigan sweater and singing “Won’t You be My Neighbor.”  Barack Obama, the Democrat leadership, and the “Weiner media” would eat him alive.

As for Mitt Romney, he too is a bit too nice, a bit too polished to get “down-and-dirty” with Obama, as conservative voters are going to demand.  Besides, after the lame answer he gave in defense of his failed “RomneyCare” plan in Massachusetts, I’m not sure we could ever trust him to adequately espouse conservative values.

After a scathing Wall Street Journal attack on RomneyCare, Romney responded with, “I stand by my successful healthcare plan in Massachusetts, but ObamaCare is a disaster because it does all of the things that RomneyCare does, just on a national level.  So, if I am elected president I will give waivers to states so they can repeat my mistakes if they want to, or, if they are smart, they will reject both my approach and Obama’s.”

One wonders who advises Romney on his public statements.  As a former speech writer for a presidential candidate, I can’t imagine who might be putting words into his mouth.  Could it be Joe Biden?  Newt Gingrich?  His response was all wrong.
He should have said, “Yes, the Massachusetts healthcare reform plan has not been the panacea that we hoped it would be.  But the states are the laboratories of social and economic policy in our federal system and it is the states that must take the lead in trying to solve problems such as the healthcare crisis.  Barack Obama and the Democrats in Congress don’t seem to understand that, when it comes to problems as great and as intractable as healthcare, the one-size-fits-all formula that they’re so fond of just won’t work.  At least we tried.  Now the Congress, the next president, and the other forty-nine states can learn from our experience in Massachusetts.”

But it was in New Hampshire, in announcing his candidacy for the 2012 GOP nomination, that Romney frittered away any chance he had of winning the 2012 nomination.  Appearing before a crowd of New Hampshire supporters, he said, “I don’t speak for the scientific community, of course, but I believe the world is getting warmer.  I can’t prove that, but I believe, based on what I read, that the world is getting warmer.  And number two, I believe that humans contribute to that.  I don’t know how much our contribution is to that, because I know that there have been periods of greater heat and warmth in the past but I believe we contribute to that.  And so I think it’s important for us to reduce our emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases that may well be significant contributors to the climate change and the global warming that you’re seeing.”

Goodbye, Mitt Romney!  No Republican candidate who would publicly put those thoughts into words can ever win the party’s nomination for President of the United States.

To name those in the party who do possess “true grit,” we can start with Texas governor Rick Perry; New Jersey governor Chris Christie; Wisconsin governor Scott Walker; Maine governor Paul LePage; Ohio governor John Kasich, South Carolina governor Nikki Haley, Arizona governor Jan Brewer, former Speaker Newt Gingrich; former corporate CEO Herman Cain; former Alaska governor Sarah Palin; Congressman Ron Paul, of Texas, Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann, of Minnesota; and Congressman Allen West, of Florida.  It is out of that group of thirteen patriots that Republicans will likely select their 2012 ticket, with the ideal ticket being Governor Rick Perry for president and either Herman Cain or Michele Bachmann for vice president.

Once in office, President Perry will need a “kick-ass” cabinet.  He will need Sarah Palin as Secretary of the Interior,Chris Christie as Attorney General, Mitt Romney as Secretary of Commerce, Newt Gingrich as Secretary of Education,Allen West as Secretary of Homeland Security; and Ron Paul as Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board.  If she is not the first female vice president, Michele Bachmann would make a fine Treasury SecretaryAnd if Governor Perry fails to select him as his running mate, Herman Cain would provide an invaluable contribution as Chairman of the Republican National Committee where he would serve as a much-needed conservative role model for all black Americans.

As Interior Secretary, Palin would have oil producers drilling wells in the offshore… east coast, west coast, the Gulf of Mexico, and Alaska… in the Baaken range in Montana and the Dakotas, and in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR).  With the sound of all those drilling rigs operating around the clock Americans might find it hard to sleep at night, but within four years the Perry administration would have the U.S. well on its way toward energy independence.

And that natural gas pipeline that Palin got approved as Governor of Alaska?  She and President Perry would have that pipeline rerouted, and instead of bringing low-cost, clean-burning natural gas to the non-energy-friendly states of Washington, Oregon, and California, that gas would be going directly to the Dakotas and to the Plains states… along with the heavy crude produced from the Athabasca tar sands in Alberta Province… where business development and job creation are deserved and much appreciated.

Perry would also have our southern border closed to illegal immigration, the economy would be growing at a fast pace, Boeing would be producing airplanes in its new South Carolina assembly plant, the jobless rate would be shrinking toward the 4-5% “full employment” level, and gasoline prices would once again be less than $2 per gallon.

All of these things can be accomplished.  All we need is a man or woman with “true grit” in the White House, a filibuster-proof Republican super-majority in the U.S. Senate, and a prohibitive Republican majority in the House of Representatives.  And whenever our candidates debate Obama and Biden, let’s send them away feeling as if we’ve dumped a healthy portion of “true grit” into their undershorts.

Obama must not only be defeated in 2012, he and his policies must be totally repudiated in a landslide defeat.  We need a “Rooster” Cogburn-style Republican in the White House to undo all the damage Obama and his administration have done to America and get America back on the road to fiscal and social sanity again!  So let’s stop thinking about it and talking about it… let’s get it done!

Amen, brothers & sisters!
