Answer Me This — Yard Sale Ripoff

Suze, over at Obsolete Childhood has introduced a new prompt called “Answer Me This.” Suze says it’s “an alternative daily prompt” to the WordPress Daily Prompt, which she characterized as “ones that totally suck and are focused upon the young people here.

Anyway, her prompt question today is this:

If something at a yard sale is far more valuable than the posted price, do you have to let the seller know?

The truth is, I rarely go to yard sales. In fact, I can’t even remember the last time I went to one. But back when I was living in Massachusetts in a 100+ year old Victorian house, my wife and I used to go to all kinds of antiques stores and antiques fairs hoping to find period pieces that would fit in well with our antique house.

Unfortunately, we were not experts in terms of putting a value on the various pieces we bought. There were time when I felt like I got a good deal on a real antique, although it was more a feeling than an appraisal of its actual value. There were other times when I bought something and was sure that the store or booth owner was laughing his or her ass off because I paid a lot of money for something that was a piece of crap or a fake antique made last year in China.

So, back to Suze’s question. Hell no, I wouldn’t say anything to the seller if I thought, or even knew, it was much more valuable than what they were asking for it. I’d consider it karma for all the times I bought a worthless piece of shit at an antiques store for a pretty penny.

Five Word Weekly Challenge — The Sting

Barry and Anita were having what any casual observer would call a fling.

Barry’s wife Shonda began to get suspicious when he started wearing a lot of bling.

It was nothing really valuable, Barry told her, not a lot of cha-ching.

But Shonda wasn’t powerless and gave Barry back her wedding ring.

For the divorce lawyer she made a recital of every jointly owned thing.

And in the end, Barry realized that his bling made him the victim of her sting.
