I could post about my day, although it's a little late for that, but instead, I'm looking at the dirt that's ground into my hands, and feeling the skin cracking every time I move them, and I need recommendations. As you know, I work in silviculture, which involves a lot of dirt and water, and sometimes, like today, a combination of dirt, water, cold weather, and fir pitch. I have a very good hand cream that I use at night, L'Occitane en Provence's Shea Butter Hand Cream, as provided to me on a regular basis by my mom, either as birthday and Christmas presents or as random acts of the L'Occitane fairy, and I'm not looking to switch that.

However, I have two other product needs!

First, please recommend me a hand cleaner! Yes, I could use the industrial orange pumice scrub at work, and sometimes I have to, but I'm in the market for something nicer! I'm not opposed to pumice if it gets the dirt out of my fingerprints, but on the other hand, I'd like something with a better smell and that isn't so harsh. Do any products exist that combine pumice and some kind of moisturizing formula? Ideas?

Second, any recommendations for a daytime, at-work moisturizer? I currently have a tiny office tube of the shea butter hand cream, but it's such nice stuff that I feel like using it during the day is a waste. I've also tried Neutrogena Norwegian Formula for this, but it's too sticky, and also makes my hands too slippery when they get wet. Again, ideas? Anything that works for you? Anything that will keep me from ending a day of growing trees with hands that are both full of dirt and bleeding a little when I move them wrong? Gloves, I should say, are sometimes, but not always, an option.

Eucerin for the handcream, it's super moisturizing. No guarantee that it won't make your hands slippery though. The internet says that it's available in Canada too.

For the Norwegian formula, I’ve found that the trick for me is to put a dab (seriously, tiny dab) into my palm and then mix it with a bit of a lighter hand cream before then rubbing into my hands. It spreads easier, is less filmy/slippy. (I am prone to eczema on my hands, the Norwegian formula is about the only non prescription thing that helps, but yeah, I know the slippery hands problem! )

My sister in law (who works in a job that requires lots of hand washing-thus-moisturizing) swears by O Keefe’s Working Hands, but I’m not sure if it’s on your side of the pond and while it’s less slippy, I prefer the Norwegian formula mix.

For the moisturizer I like Bag Balm. It is sold at drugstores in a tin that is a green cube.

For the soap I'm not sure -- maybe some of those cream soaps that car mechanics use to get grease out of their skin? They don't rely on pumice. I don't have a brand name for you, though.

Good luck!

For the moisturizer: When I was in a job that required washing my hands a lot, I used George's Cream. It's a small Canadian brand, so not available everywhere, but IIRC Shoppers Drug Mart carries it. It might have similar issues to the Neutrogena, though - I can't remember if it gets super slippery when wet.

Seconding Bag Balm. Gold Bond is my basic go-to; it soaks in quickly.

For daytime moisturizer, I use Aveeno skin relief hand cream. It’s not as intense as other options, but because it’s less greasy it mostly rubs in, so less slippery residue when I next wash my hands again.

I have a lot of contact sensitivities, so sometimes I add in this specific CVS cortisone ointment. It has the fewest possible ingredients of any topical cortisone I’ve found, and the petroleum jelly base is good at protecting skin. Obviously, that base will leave a slight residue. Mostly I use it at night, but if I do use some during the day it oesn’t matter if I am working in soil or with plants. (Not so great for a lot of other tasks.)
