That's sad as it was a lovely mug. Very large, covered in dark blue Chinese squiggles on a soft, friendly green background. And it had a lid. Well, it still does, but it no longer has an ear.
I use this mug at least twice every day: first thing in the morning (big mug of very strong Pu Erh tea) and right after dinner (the same). If I'm spending the day at home, the mug is never far from where I am and often full.

This is not my mug but a very similar white one,
that I made green to give you an impression of what my mug looks like.

The good news: it's replacable.

gummihuhn works fairly close to the excellent Chinese shop where I bought it, and is willing to get me another, one of these days.
It's good to have friends.

Look, here they are. My keys.

I've not known where they were for weeks and weeks. Not that I'd lost them; I was pretty sure they were in the house somewhere. But we have so much 'somewhere' here. So I used my spare key instead.

Today, I got tired of not knowing where my keys were; so, first of all, I decided to do a washload of several pairs of jeans. They might turn up while checking the pockets, right? But they didn't.
I put the jeans in the washing machine anyway, and decided to move on.
Next up: motorbike jackets. I have several, at least four of which are usable, and may well have been worn in the past three months.
The first jacket rewarded me with a small LED torch, a Euro coin and a piece of (wrapped) chocolate, so I knew I was onto a good thing. I kept going.
Alas, no keys in any of the bike jackets, either.
So I moved on to the jackets and coats on the coat rack, and behold, there they were in the pocket of a rain jacket! Only the second one I searched, too.

So now I'm eating the chocolate that I've earned, feeling rather pleased with myself, and taking a picture of my keys to show them to you, now that I've found them again. Finding stuff is great.

If you're reading this (and I know you are!) then please post a picture of your keys! Keys are so personal, we have them with us everyday. I'd like to see yours. Please?

Normally, this time of the year business is really slow for me. Usually, it starts to pick up in March. But this year appears to start off with a bang. I've already been asked for two price quotes, and today I was requested to make a third one!
This is what may be coming up:

The exterior of a shop in Amsterdam, very close to Dam Square. It was originally painted 'faux bois' (fake wood) but it's in disrepair, so it needs to be redone. Not certain yet. But interesting.
A large windowsill and a mantle to be painted to resemble marble, and some odds and sods in granite effect, in a private home. Price quote is approved. I'm starting on Monday.
And just in: the steering hut of a boat, made from steel, to be painted in teak effect. I'm going there tomorrow to check it out.

Neat, huh? Looks like it may be going to be a good year.

The picture is obviously 'shopped (badly). But yes, the water does glow blue or red depending on the temperature. And it's fun. The only downside is that it makes me want to run the tap needlessly.

I'm not sure if I can keep it up to post (sort of) daily there until others start posting there as well. But I can't think of any other way to get a new community started, and it's worth a try, isn't it?

Okay, I thought we were all settled with regards to the tickets for New-Zealand, even though buying the tickets was an experience that left me underwhelmed.
Now it seems Air New Zealand have cancelled the flight we were booked on, and I have been informed that if we accept this we'll be flying out one day later.
With the trip being as short as it is (for such a long distance), I'm even more underwhelmed than I was before. I can has moar whelm plz?
So I called De Vliegwinkel (the travel agency) and they'll try to get the money back (the e-mail I got states that this should be possible) and book us on a flight with a different airline instead.
I do hope they'll be able to come up with a reasonable solution. They'll call me this afternoon. Fingers crossed...

We lost four newtlets today. I don't know what caused it, but the container they were in didn't seem to be completely clean. It had some sort of slime or mucous that didn't wash out with hot water alone. If that's what caused it, it may have clogged up their gills or something.
I may need to clean the containers with a brush instead of just rinsing them.

Oh well. Some losses were to be expected from a first-time newt breeder. We'll see how they are tomorrow; at least they're eating heartily.

amphibilove .

These are a Dutch traditional treat for new year's eve and new year's day. But you can buy them from street vendors throughout the winter. And they're fun to make at home, too. I've even seen them being made next to a camp fire while camping.

If it all works like it's supposed to work, they'll turn themselves over in the oil to get evenly brown on all sides.

17 g compressed fresh yeast
235 ml lukewarm milk
280 g all-purpose flour
10 g salt
1 egg
110 g dried currants
125 g raisins
1 Granny Smith apple - peeled, cored and finely chopped (optional)
1 litre of vegetable oil for deep-frying
125 g confectioners' sugar for dusting.

DIRECTIONS

Break up the compressed yeast, and stir into the warm milk. Let stand for a few minutes to dissolve. Sift the flour and salt into a large bowl. Stir the yeast mixture and egg into the flour and mix into a smooth batter. Stir in the currants, raisins and apple. Cover the bowl, and leave the batter in a warm place to rise until double in size. This will take about 1 hour.
Heat the oil in a deep-fryer, or heavy deep pan to 190 degrees C / 375 degrees F. Use 2 metal spoons to shape scoops of dough into balls, and drop them carefully into the hot oil.
Fry the balls until golden brown, about 8 minutes. The oliebollen should be soft and not greasy. If the oil is not hot enough, the outside will be tough and the insides greasy. Drain finished oliebollen on paper towels and dust with confectioners' sugar. Serve them piled on a dish with more confectioners' sugar dusted over them. Eat them hot if possible.

...and I don't even own one.

Why is it that people seem to think that getting an e-reader involves signing a contract that states that you'll never read, hold, buy or gift another paper book?
If I got a euro for every time someone on the BookCrossing forums says 'Oh no, I could never get used to using one of those, because I like holding paper books' , '... I don't want to get rid of all my books', or '... when I'm giving books as presents I want something to wrap', I'd have a nice sum. And if I got another euro for every time someone says 'Oh no, I could never read an e-book because I dislike reading off a computer screen for longer times, the flickering makes my eyes hurt' or something similar, I could probably afford one of these by now:

This is a nice-looking, simple, very portable e-reader I saw in a store yesterday, priced at 300 euros. I could definitely see uses for it. And no, the screen does not flicker anymore than paper books do.

But seriously. E-readers do not flicker. They read like paper, only you can make the font bigger. Is that a Bad Thing? And no one will come to your house and take all your books once you get one.
It's like people are saying 'Oh no, I would never get one of these newfangled telephone thingies, I like talking to people face to face.'
Why are people so afraid of new options?

I've recently found out that all four of my newts have names now. You know how names just come naturally after a while, without you actively thinking about it? That's what happened.
Because fire bellied newts are best recognised by the patterns on their bellies, here's a 'belly' picture of each of them, proudly showing their true colours.

Those of you who have met me know that my user icon actually represents my hair colour... during the first three weeks after I've dyed it, of course. After that, it gradually bleaches to a washed-out reddish hue.
Usually, right after

stoneshop cuts it, I dye it eggplant colour again, to get rid of the odd two-tone effect (because most of the dye has grown out by then).
This time, when he had finished cutting my hair and asked me to check how I liked it, I held the mirror behind me to look at the back of my head (using a second mirror that's on the wall), saw the familiar contrast of the reddish dyed part and my own greyish-blonde colour, and decided I liked it.
So, because it's nice to do things different every now and then, I dyed only the front part, so I'd have three colours.
The result is rather funky!

It's not easy to take a picture of your own head, but it'll do. You can see my own hair colour at the roots, the reddish/pinkish locks on top (which aren't exactly as pink as it looks here, but it all depends greatly on lighting), and the dark purplish hue near the front. I think I like it!
