Upgraded my OS
Thursday, 19 October 2017 11:16I moved from Linux Mint 17.3 32-bits to Linux Mint 18.2 64-bits, both in the Cinnamon version. I retained my Home directory, so pretty much all settings and things like email carried over.
Everything is the pretty much same and yet many tiny things are different. Mostly fonts and font sizes. It's like getting all new clothes all at once, and they're very similar to your old clothes, but not exactly the same and they've not been molded to your body the way your old clothes have. It's slightly odd but mostly nice. And everything works again (including some old Windows software through Wine).
All in all, it took about three hours to make a backup, reinstall, get all my software going and settle in again. Try doing that with Windows.

doing that with Windows
Date: 19 Oct 2017 12:07 (UTC)but i've given up fighting with os,. i build my own 32/64 bit os from debian,..not exactly LFS or ARCH,
i backport, since the new releases are buggy like a spring picnic, so i start with a stable core and upgrade and harden it for my system, have compiled the kernel so it's not standard/overblown, so it's more like buying an old car and making it a street rod,..
the os devs(all of them,Linus is no angel) are trying too hard to make systems that are everything to everyone and in my opinion they are headed the windows/ios path,. i run no windows software, and do things that people swear you need another os for
i was coding C/assembler in the 80's,.debugging and compiling isn't scary,..and though a bit rusty can still manage,.(still playing with embedded systems)
i'll keep my swiss army knife in my pocket, don't need it on my desktop,...:)

Date: 19 Oct 2017 12:37 (UTC)I never have issues upgrading from one version of Windows to the next. The switch from Win8 to Win10 was particularly seamless.
My husband has tried on several occasions to use Linux but can never get everything to work with it -- there's always something that just refuses to work, so he's given up on Linux completely. Not that he desperately wanted to switch to it -- he likes Windows. He was just curious.
