It's that time again~

I'm still trying to decide which comics I want to read the most and how much money I want to part with, but these are the ones on my radar at the moment.

Edit (10/19): I bought a bunch and now I have Opinions.

A Box Full Of Darkness by Gina Nguyen (38p) (£6.00)
An excess of self by Pautipeep (Paloma Carvajal) (31p) (£6.00)
✅ Asunder by Narrenstitch (21p) (£4.00) ♥♥
Crushes by Apitnobaka (77p) (£8.00)
Floodwater Maiden by LILYRESH (43p) (£7.00)
✅ Guts of the Crab God by Randall Rossi (84p) (£10.00) ♥♥♥ - This one is one of my favorites from this year's haul. The art style is so vibrant and fluid and utterly captivating. I love the way figures blend into each other to create narrative flow. Unexpectedly comedic horny ending lol.
Help! I died in an outlet store and now I'm a ghost! by CA Strike (138p) (£8.00)
✅ INJEST by Mapurl (71p) (£10.00) ♥♥♥
Ladies of the Living Princess by Theo Stultz (177p) (£14.00)
Laura by Marty Tina G. (87p) (£10.00)
✅ Lazy Cat Sundays by Hannah Lock (16p) (£3.00) ♥♥♥
✅ L'Archange et le Diable by Smileyfaceorg (58p) (£9.00) ✖ - This felt very incomplete and was overall disappointing. It felt as if the creator was either too ambitious in their scope or too perfectionistic in their vision that they were unable to finish drawing all the pages in time. Scene changes often start with a page of text written like a play script. It would then change abruptly to comic format. I found these pages unreadable due to being black text on red in slanting cursive font. Some of these pages of text weren't even translated from French to English, making them unreadable to me for language reasons. The art is nice and the page layouts very stylish, but there isn't much going for it in terms of story.
✅ Moon Junction by Anabel Colazo (32p) (£5.00) ♥♥♥ - This one took me by surprise and is another favorite from the haul. I thought this was going to be a simple short story, but there was a surprising amount of lore, backstory, and relationship development in these 32 pages, also nice themes of freewill and destiny. The art style and character designs are utterly charming as well as the characters personalities. Does contain some typos and grammar issues of the non-native English speaker variety, but you can understand what they're saying.
On Love and Lepidoptery by Simone Stehouwer (28p) (£5.00)
✅ PolyBiCarbonate Lifeforms by Deepti Megh (32p) (£6.00) ♥♥♥ - Loved this. Most of the autobio comics I've read featuring polyamory were about toxic polyamorous relationships, so it was a nice surprise to find out that the polyamory wasn't the problem in this one.
Song of the Seabirds by Narsid (134p) (£15.00)
✅ Sweet Fanged by Ari (35p) (£6.00) ♥♥♥
SYRINGE by Nozmo (45p) (£8.00)
The Seven Beaus of Miss Clarissa Bliss by Ash Green (34p) (£6.00)
We Were Just Playing Pretend by Linda Liu (30p) (£5.00)

Been feeling kind of down lately (understatement) and was thinking, just before I rolled my daily free pull, "You know what'd be nice? If the game gave me the 100 diamond prize." And then it gave me the 300 diamond prize instead. Amazing. I didn't even know there was a 300 diamond prize. My mood and the universe feel a little more in balance now.

300 diamonds sitting pretty in my inboxLook at all this other crap I could have gotten instead0.10% pull rate equals a 1 in 1000 chance or once every 1000 days...which is about as long as I've been playing the game anyway.

How It StartedHow It's Going

Heh, I think I'm pretty satisfied with the amount of stuff I have now. I'm trying not to think about all the cute items I missed out on, especially the adorable sleeping plushie from a recent event, but I distract myself by telling myself that if I must have a flex, it'd be to fill the room with teddy bears, which I can get at any time since those come from Luke's main story route.

The first pic is from September 2022 and the second one is from today, so this is almost one and a half years worth of stuff.

Challenge #8: Talk About a Current Fannish Project

Official art of Luke from Ikemen Prince holding up a plate with a round, bear-and-honey-themed cake on it while licking whipped cream from his finger. He has a cute 'blep' expression and a bit of whipped cream at the corner of his mouth.Photo of tiny crocheted pieces resembling the cake Luke is holding. Includes a smiling bear head, a yellow circle resembling the honey-like icing, and a teeny-tiny two-leafed sprig of mint. All were made with embroidery floss.A close up of the cake item from the game. It looks the same as the cake in the other pic: round with alternating layers of chocolate and butterscotch-colored cake, artfully dripping with a honey glaze. The toppings include a cute, brown, smiling bear head; a dollop of whipped cream, and a mint garnish. Unlike the other pic, this cake has a pin-striped, pale green ribbon wrapped around the bottom and tied with a bow. There's also a chibi Luke standing behind the cake.

Here's something I started a while ago, but still haven't finished. It's a mini amigurumi replica of Luke's year one birthday cake item from the game! I love food in fiction and illustrated foods and thought the design of this cake was really cute and wanted to recreate it in some way in the physical world. I got stuck on how to make the whipped cream, though, and can't really proceed until I get that right since the diameter of the cake is dependent on the size of the toppings, but once I figure that out, the rest should be...a piece of cake lol.

Love Love Love
  • Meryl by C A Strike  (£8.00) - A memoir comic about a quirky and beloved pet cat. I was hesitating over this one because I couldn't figure out the tone of the comic from the sample pages and didn't want to read anything too depressing or cynical, but I'm so glad I bought this because it's probably one of my most favorite comics ever now. It's much more positive and full of love than I feared and the creator's whimiscal art style and inventive paneling pairs perfectly with their storytelling style and understated humor. The "mention of animal death" content warning really is for just a mention. The comic desn't go into any detail about the circumstances of Meryl's death, and the few pages that depict grieving are not angsty and deep in the headspace of someone grieving. Overall, the work really keeps its focus on sharing fond memories and celebrating the life of Meryl while not ignoring the full spectrum of human emotion that comes from loving another living creature. Highly recommended.
  • My Unhinged Food Diary by Shazleen Khan (£5.00) - A cathartic read after recently gaining some miserable new food allergies. I'm having trouble iterating exactly what I loved about it, but it's really good and made me feel all sorts of ways. I'll definitely be checking out the creator's other works in the future.

Liked But Wish It Was Longer
  • Minnow Soup! by Felipe Ortiz (£3.00) - Short and sweet. I'm a sucker for delicious-looking food art and cozy cottagecore vibes, so I enjoyed this comic on principle, but I do wish it were longer or that there was a little more conflict because something about it left me unsatisfied. Worth the price, though. Very G-rated and good for young children.

Good But The Story's Been Done Before
  • Release by Olivia Sualdea (£6.00) - Technically excellent with such a charming art style, but the story has been done many times before. I was hoping there'd be some poignant nuance about it that set it apart from others, but it was very paint-by-numbers. The lack of dialog also makes it a much shorter read than one might expect from the page count.

Sometimes self-care is spending over an hour organizing your fictional room containing 30+ plushies of your favorite 2D man.

Screenshot of my avatar's room in Ikemen Vampire. Isaac's and my avatar sit on a white bench in the center of a paved garden under an arched trellis of roses. The roses are various shades of pink like the roses that my avatar wears in a crown across her head and studded throughout her long, grayish hair. Isaac has short, slightly unkempt/windswept, brownish-pink hair and bright pink eyes. He holds out a bouquet of pale pink roses to my avatar.

Currently suffering because I want to unlock the new area in Secret Cat Forest, but I have no idea which items I need to craft to proceed. I feel like they told you all the items you needed for the other areas? Haha, why is this one different? Please, I need more kitties. 🥲

I've been working under the assumption that the items I need are:
  1. All winter-themed items - This might not be true because I'm pretty sure the other areas required items from across a variety of styles. But they did finish adding all the winter items only a couple months ago, so maybe?
  2. Items that require more logs and longer craft times - I think the camp area required a ger and a large rug? And those use up 5000+ logs.
  3. Items that are kind of ugly lol - At least compared to other variations of the same item. Idk maybe I just have bad taste, but I feel like I had to make a lot of things I didn't want to make lol.

Edit: My suffering continues )

A list of craft books, magazines and mooks that I own. For organization purposes because these are stored all over my room due to a lack of dedicated shelf space, but posting it publicly because it might also be useful as a rec list or accountability post.

Note: The links are just for ease of seeing the cover when I can't remember which book it is by title alone. They're not affiliate links.

(Most of the others are full of patterns/how-to instructions and are highly dependent on whether the projects fit your personal aesthetics, but I like them all and think they're great or else I wouldn't keep them around.)

Ah, good ol' Dreamwidth. I'm here to vent (and squee) about the otome games I play because /r/otomegames is kinda...eh. It feels very much like a Cult of Nice echo chamber instead of a place for genuine discussion and I can't deal with how so much of the userbase is so insecure about everything—from liking problematic tropes and characters, to liking otome games in a world where romance and media for girls is looked down on, to interpreting any criticism about the things they like as negativity or bashing. I swear, every time I go there, my mental health plummets.
