You’re not as stuck as you think

You’re not as stuck as you think

Between the ages of 18 to 30, it’s very easy for one to get discouraged and “stuck.” After all, we’re crawling up a grueling slope of high hopes and meager accomplishments to get just a little close to some of our fairly far-fetched goals. Somewhere along the way, we come a point that appears to be the end. Either we got tired, or resources ran out, or opportunities became slim, or circumstances arose…

You could probably name a specific reason as to why you’re stuck. But are you really as stuck as you think?

During that “stuck” period, or “in between” time, or “taking a break” season (whatever you want to call it), you don’t have to be unproductive. And it doesn’t have to be pointless. First off, I imagine you’re in deep search for something, anything! Perhaps it’s a job, or an internship, or the right school, or the right magazine to submit work to. Here’s a thing: you don’t have to do something longterm. If you just need a job to save some money, then don’t be afraid to settle. It won’t be for long, and it’ll satisfy a need when you need it. If you want to get moving on your education, choose a decent school. If you find something better, you can always transfer. Every opportunity is meant to be a step towards a specific goal, and so nothing would be nothing. Even if a position isn’t related to your desired career, it’s still going to provide a need, particularly in the experience area.

Now, as you’re searching, you should get a little creative. Who says you have to follow norms? There’s all kinds of freelance jobs. What are you good at? Or perhaps you can volunteer with an organization that interests you for a short time. Look beyond your usual search bubble and see what outside-the-box things you can do while you wait to get to that next step.

During this “stuck” period, why not take advantage of the free time? Go out and do something you otherwise couldn’t if you were tied down to a schedule. Sooner or later, once you do have a schedule to stick to, you’ll wish you had done that thing you wanted to when you could.

Perhaps being “stuck” just might be the opportunity to go back to school. By that, it doesn’t have to be university or college, or really any legitimate sophisticated school. You can “go back to school” by taking some free online classes, or teaching yourself a skill on your own. Basically, go out and learn something. This is the time to do it. It may even lead to something new that you originally didn’t consider was an option.

It’s hard to keep your spirits up when you feel like you’re stuck, but really you’re not as stuck as you think. That is up to you, of course.

5 Changes in the air

Perhaps it’s been noticed that I’ve been a little…disconnected. Partly my fault. My one yet frustrating class has ended, textbooks have been returned, and summer classes have been registered. I can forget about school for a little while. Summer has begun, and that means change is in the air. A few things have been occurring, good and wonderful enough things.

  1. I am finished with my internship at 3 or Less. I feel like making it ceremonial and taking a deep freeing breath when I walk out. It was a fun and educational experience that I don’t regret, as it taught me many valuable things. I’m just very eager to move on and expand myself.
  2. I’m starting a virtual internship with NCM Publishing as an Editing intern. I’ll be editing manuscripts! This is one of the things I discovered recently: I love to edit writing. I’m very good at it too, so why not? I’m excited to learn editing and become more professional with it.
  3. I’m getting involved with the youth at my church. With my brother as the youth pastor I became more and more interested in being a part of something like it. I realized that some of my gifts and passions could be used and explored with this. Now that the scare has passed, I think I’m rather eager to grow my leadership skills. The growing and learning part is one of the things I feel most excited about, in fact.
  4. I applied for a job at a new cafe opening nearby, and I will be pursuing after it. I don’t why, but ever since I first found it on snagajob.com I kept going back to it; it fascinated me. Perhaps it’s a spirit thing that makes me want to try it out. That’s what I’m doing it for, to try it out. I want to try something new, put myself outside of the box, in the unordinary. I don’t know. All I know is recently I’ve had a sudden urge to just explore new things.
  5. I am a hooked Whovian. I just watched the infamous Doomsday episode and, yes, I cried. Not too hard, because I had to leave in about twenty minutes, and it wouldn’t do to show up anywhere blubbering like a silly fangirl. I never thought I’d get attached to Rose as much as I did, but it was inevitable. Yes, I am officially hooked on Doctor Who.

I’m sure more change is to happen. When 2014 started I had the feeling that it would be a year of difference and new things, and that feeling has not wavered. I’m ready.

3 or Less Production Internship

Last week I begun my semester internship with 3 or Less Production, a small production company based here in Austin. My role in the team has been established, and, you can guess it: I’m doing lots of writing. My duty will be to write for 3 or Less’s blog, Twitter, and Facebook, respectively. So, yes! Lots of writing and lots of social media-ing.

Also, as a project for the interns, we are to create a short film. The creative juices are flowing, and today we came up with some pretty nifty ideas for a script. I’m really excited to work on this!

You should check out 3 or Less’s site, as well as their blog, Facebook, and Twitter. I’ll be writing there, so you can read up 😉
