I ruined a perfectly decent morning yesterday. Yep. Set the day up for angst, right out of the gate.
I was complicit; I take ownership. I’ve had “a firm talking-to” with myself on this topic, several times. You’ve finally learned your lesson, Joe, you won’t be doing that again, I tell myself. Then a week later, I break, only to be miserable and self-begrudging again.
Let me back up.
As adults living in these “internet times” over the last 25 years or so, we’ve all no doubt developed our sit-down-at-the-desk morning routines — the sites we visit like clockwork, the tabs that remain forever open on our devices as reminders, ready to provide the info. How’s the bank balance? Everything looks okay. The investment accounts? Okay, that’s still rolling, I suppose. Here’s my calendar, my selected news aggregator, I’ve got my coffee, my clean desk, time to meander into those emails.
It’s comforting. Starts the day right.
Until, at some point, I started checking these things on my phone instead. While still in bed. Less than 15 seconds after my eyes opened.
