We’re all becoming the manager who forgot how the system works.

You open the pull request. The diff is 847 lines. You didn’t write any of them. The agent did, in eleven minutes. While you reviewed Slack messages. Tests pass. The ticket moves to done. Your manager is happy. And somewhere beneath the satisfaction, a thought arrives that you immediately dismiss: if this breaks in production, do I actually know why?

You dismiss it because the tech world has given you a clean answer. You are an orchestrator now. A conductor. The code is not yours to write — it is yours to direct, review, and ship. This is the new job. This is progress. The industry has said so, loudly and repeatedly, and most of it is true.

But there is something else happening, something the industry has not yet named cleanly. And it sounds, uncomfortably, like a story tech culture already knows.

Trust on AI

The programmer who uses AI all day but cannot explain what their own system does is not a new kind of engineer. They are the new middle manager.

This is not an insult. It is a structural observation. The middle manager was never created to be useless. They were created to be a translation layer — someone between the people who built things and the people who decided things. They coordinated. They delegated. They reviewed outputs from people whose work they had once understood, until the gap between their authority and their comprehension became permanent.

Tech culture spent twenty years mocking that gap. The Dilbert manager who can’t code. The executive who calls everything “the website.” The VP who asks if you can “just add a feature” without understanding what that costs. The industry’s founding mythology was built on a specific promise: here, the people who build things are the people who run things. Understanding is power. Comprehension is credibility.

That mythology is now under pressure from inside.

In 2026, 41% of all code written is AI-generated. That number is expected to hit 65% within two years. And yet — here is where the story gets strange — 96% of developers say they do not fully trust the AI-generated code they are shipping. Not 30%. Not 50%. Ninety-six percent. They are using it anyway, every day, at scale, while quietly doubting almost every line.

AI Generated Code Adoption

There is a word for a management structure where the person with authority doesn’t fully trust the work of the people beneath them, cannot fully audit it, but ships it anyway because the velocity demands it. We do not usually use that word approvingly.

The METR study put a number on this feeling. Experienced developers working with AI tools believed they were 20% faster. Measurements showed they were actually 19% slower. A 39-percentage-point gap between perceived and actual performance. The middle manager has always believed they were adding value. The org chart agreed. The output often told a different story.

We built AI to remove the human bottleneck from software. The human bottleneck turned out to be the part that understood what the software was doing.

To be precise about where this breaks: it does not break on simple systems. A junior developer asking an agent to scaffold a CRUD app, or a senior engineer using Cursor to write a migration script they understand perfectly well — these are not the failure mode. The failure mode is the system that grows. The codebase that compounds. The product that scales to ten engineers and three agents all writing in parallel, where architectural coherence requires someone who actually holds the whole thing in their head. Agents achieve only 42% capability on multi-file refactors in enterprise environments. Legacy codebases fare even worse. The tools work inside the window. The window is not the job.

The middle manager’s core tragedy was never that they were lazy or malicious. It was that the job moved faster than their understanding could keep pace. Promotion after promotion, each one a reward for past performance, until they were managing systems they could no longer reason about from first principles. Sound familiar?

The developers who will avoid this are not the ones who refuse AI. That is not the point. The ones who will avoid it are the ones who treat comprehension as a discipline, not a casualty. Who ask not just whether the tests pass but whether they can construct the mental model of what the code is doing and why. Who slow down, deliberately and against the pressure of velocity metrics, to understand.

In ten years, the engineering org chart will have two kinds of people: those who direct AI because they understand the systems deeply enough to know when it is wrong, and those who direct AI because directing AI is what you do now — and only one of those groups will be able to tell the difference between a product that works and a product that hasn’t failed yet. The gap between them will not show up in a sprint review. It will show up at three in the morning when something breaks in a way nobody predicted, in a codebase nobody fully understands, built by a team that shipped very, very fast.

You’re Not an Engineer Anymore.
