Why Now?

What is Codemotion?

Best to start with what it isn’t. Codemotion Berlin is the Developer Conference that is NOT boring, nor a time waster.

Since 2012 Codemotion Berlin has been the place where developers came for networking, to learn new ways to tackle complex problems and yes, to enjoy the fact that Codemotion is all-inclusive.

Codemotion Berlin became a community-based conference where developers can handpick their own Agenda from 14 tracks and 6 parallel stages.

Why Codemotion?

Why not? Developers have too many conferences where the organizers create the agendas in a rather shallow way. We think, that developers want to learn and want the challenge. That is the guiding idea behind Codemotion Berlin. The crowd is smart and dev only. We love that. Maybe too many smart people. Well, that should be our largest problem.

Why now?

November 20–21 is just around the corner. That week there will be other interesting events in Berlin for Devs and so we say, why not?

Discount code: CHECK!
Cool dev conference with a proven track record: CHECK!
HALF PRICE yet still all-inclusive compared to all competitors: CHECK!
Surprise gadget: CHECK!

Where is the agenda?

The agenda is massive, you can see it at: https://berlin2018.codemotionworld.com/conference/

Who is speaking there?

Get to know the speakers at: https://berlin2018.codemotionworld.com/speakers/

How do I get tickets?

And here we are, Codemotion Berlin is just around the corner. November 20–21 is the date. Learn about advanced topics such as deep-linking, leveraging Navigation to simplify modularization for instant apps, and Dynamic App Delivery.

Android app distribution has an impressive history behind it, leading to where we now. You can hear about it at Wojtek’s session and even more — technologies that enabled Google Play Dynamic Delivery using the new bundle format, including for the first time letting developers dynamically load optional modules containing code and resources at runtime.

What’s a hot topic nowadays? — Of course, Slices! Slices is a new API introduced as part of Android P (and Jetpack). At Anton’s talk we’ll discuss how we can use it to build interactive Google Search results on Android and make better integration with Google Assistant.

Best practices from the industry

Avoid reinventing the wheel, get to know lessons learned from top-notch Android experts.

The biggest pain — performance. How to fix all the performance bottlenecks? How does an engineer validate that their improvements actually work? How can future performance regressions be prevented? These and more questions will be answered at Valera’s session, tech lead at Slack. He will introduce the basic building blocks of a performance testing pipeline and share the lessons learned from building and maintaining this infrastructure.

In the web world, developers can ship and iterate on features very quickly. How can mobile developers use this same process when there is overhead to doing a full release? From technical automation solutions to team process that facilitates it — all that can be heard during Andrea’s talk.

Dealing with legacy code can be tricky. At Chuck’s talk we will explore the ways to navigate, maintain, and evolve a legacy codebase. The covered topics will include testing, refactoring, architecture, and dependency breaking techniques with examples based on the speaker’s own experience over the past 9+ years as an Android engineer.

Going deep in Android framework

Wanna get better understanding on how the Android framework works? You definitely have to hear talks from the guys above!

ClassLoaders are not new. They’ve existed since Java 1.0 and are a core part of how the JVM works. Things work a bit different under the hood in Android, but the core principles are the same and we, as Android developers, largely take it for granted. Zac will take you deep into how class loading works in Android and later explore the implications of trying to manipulate the application’s ClassLoader at runtime (for better or worse) in the context of logging, hot fixing, adding features, and interacting with third party code.

If you’ve been using Constraint Layout since release or are just checking it out — Sean’s talk is for you. Learn when to use Constraint Layout, and equally important, when to use other layouts. You’ll see how Constraint Layout can help you build complex designs on Android and how to build Constraint Layout animations with Motion Layout.

Ever wondered how easily to add image effects to your app? At Rebecca’s session you can learn how to process images on Android. Working with ColorFilters and Renderscript can provide your app with functionality to allow users to adjust their images to their liking.

Interested? See what else is special this year 🔥

Demo zone

Do not expect Falcon Heavy and Elon Musk, but you won’t get bored. Organizers prepared 200 m² of expo zone filled with AR, VR, Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence demos!

Venue

This year DFUA is moving to Planeta Kino — comfortable seven-hall cinema. Have you already considered implementing a state machine based approach for your app? Are you afraid how this architecture scales in the real world? Have you ever wondered how to deal with in-app navigation, A/B tests, animations or ultimately how to test and maintain such architecture efficiently? This talk starts where other introduction talks end. It will bring a practical knowledge and learnings about the state- machine- based architecture from million-users app.

Common Poor Coding Patterns and How to Avoid Them by Alice Yuan

As time passes and new feature and quick bug fixes are put in, somehow your Android codebase turned into a mess of multiple levels of inheritance of views and fragments and you’re stuck wondering how you ended up here in the first place. In this talk Alice will share common poor patterns that every developer first makes when developing in Android and the alternative architecture patterns to ensuring clean code. All these mistakes previously existed within the Pinterest codebase!

ADB, Break On Through To the Other Side by Eyal Lezmy

ADB is maybe one of the most used tools by the Android developers. But it is for sure the less known. If you ever wondered how ADB is working? Why is it faster now? How is Android Studio using it under the hood? Why is my ADB server sometimes killed? And by the way, what is this server about? This talk is made for you. Eyal spent several weeks diving into the ADB source code and learned interesting things about this project, its history, the internals, the interaction with the developers tools, … It’s time to share this with us!

The Build Side of Android App by Boris Farber and Nikita Kozlov

Are annotations fast or slow, is having many modules a good thing, and what about packages and lambdas?
