Likes: I like fun, silly, happy, cheerful fic. I like happy endings! I do enjoy hurt/comfort, though.

DNWs: I don't like hurt without comfort or unhappy endings

Although I provide various Jewish prompts for each fandom, if you're not comfortable with them, feel free to do the woman or evil vizier route.

Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger : I have no Jewish tie-in here, I just love the team.

機界戦隊ゼンカイジャー | Kikai Sentai Zenkaiger : Jewish world? Passover world? Purim world?

×爆上戦隊ブンブンジャー | Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger (TV) : Oh gods, what if these goobers ended up trying to deliver to an Orthodox Jew on Shabbat? They're sure as hell not signing for anything. Or getting invited to a shul, because that would totally happen to them.

×Books of the Raksura - Martha Wells : Anything, I love these books :D

×InCryptid - Seanan McGuire : I think it's obvious that they encounter a golem or a dybbuk, right?

×Innkeeper Chronicles - Ilona Andrews : Gimme a world filled with extraterrestrial Jews, please! Or a Jewish guest at the inn could be super fun.

×The Librarians (TV 2014): It's been a while since I watched the show, so I'd prefer something fun and light rather than deep in the lore. Since Jews are so very much people of the book, there are basically infinite possibilities here and I'd love all of them. For some reason, I really like the idea of the crew having to deal with Maimonides...

×Power Rangers Dino Fury: This is one of the only fandoms in the world where I prefer the canon ships to anything else: Fern/Izzy or Ollie/Amelia. Gen action or humor would be great here. I'd love some post-canon nonsense of them getting on with their lives, but any or all of the characters during the show would be great too. Something that happened off-camera? A Jewish kid at school? Or if you happen to know the fanon that Zedd and Rita are Jewish, that'd be fun to incorporate :D

×Power Rangers Samurai: I love these ridiculous kids so much. I'd love post-canon, but anything about their lives during canon would be great too. I'd love one of the team to be secretly Jewish.

×Kamen Rider W: Aaaaaaanything!

Stolen from [personal profile] petra :)

As of today, with 670 works:

1. What rating do you write most fics under?

General Audiences - 355 (I actually would not have guessed this!)

2. What are your top 3 fandoms?

DCU (Comics) (36)
Batman (All media types) (32)
Star Trek: Enterprise (26)/Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger (26)

This is a little deceptive, because I don't tag with the generic Kamen Rider or Super Sentai fandom tags. If I did...whew. As an example, my #7 fandom is Boonboomger at 22, so if I'd tagged that and Gokaiger with Super Sentai, plus all the other sentai, it would easily beat DCU and maybe beat DCU and Batman combined.

3. What is your top character you write about?

To no shock whatsoever, #1 is Bruce Wayne with 33, followed by Tim Drake with 24. I wrote a *lot* of Batman/DCU fic back in the day, folks!

4. What are the 3 top pairings?

Hahahahaha, this is more representative of my recent fic habits!

Godai Yusuke/Ichijou Kaoru (12)
Tharn Thara Kirigun/Type Thiwat Phawattakun (10) tied with Kurogane Spanner/Minato (10)
Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan (8)

I have a Tharn/Type fic in the works. Oh, and for those in the know, the Boonboomger OT6 is in 6th place with 7 fics, so I strongly suspect that will move up the list, but Spanner/Minato will likely stay strong.

5. What are the top 3 additional tags?

Humor (151) Not a shock at all
Drama (85) This one...I wonder if I used it on older fics, because I can't recall using it in years!
Friendship (65) No shock whatsoever

If we remove Drama, which is a weird choice, the #4 is Crossover with 44. I used to write a buttload of those :D

Rules: How many letters of the alphabet have you used for [starting] a fic title? One fic per line, ‘A’ and 'The’ do not count for 'a’ and ’t’. Post your score out of 26 at the end, along with your total fic count.

B - B'chol Dor Vador/In Every Generation (X-Men Comicverse)

V - The Virtue, Temper, Understanding (2Gether: The Series, Sarawat/Tine)
W - Waiting (Star Trek: Enterprise, Hoshi Sato/Malcolm Reed)
X - X-Men Comic Drabbles (Kinda cheating, but this is really what I titled it!)
Y - Yamim Noraim (Days of Awe) (X-Men movieverse)
Z -

Wow, 24/26! That's better than I thought :) I chose the first alphabetically each time, because I was curious how well my fandoms would be represented and this isn't super far off. Oddly, I could have sworn there was a Z, but apparently not. Huh.

My total fic count at this moment and to my vast amusement, is 666!

Dear Yuletide Author:

Thank you thank you! You're going to write me a story in one of my favorite fandoms and I'm super excited about it. Really, what I want is for you to write a story that you enjoy writing, so while I'll provide some prompts for each fandom, don't feel bound by them at all.

Dislikes/DNWs: Major character deaths, unhappy endings, hurt with no comfort, non-sex-related bodily fluids, body horror, kink shaming, character hate

Likes: Humor, love (both romantic and not), team as family, ridiculous idiots in love, sexy times, anything from the palest G rating up to the sexiest of E ratings, hurt with tons of comfort, slapstick comedy, curtainfic, characters passing the Broccoli Test (again, romantic or not)

For all fandoms, feel free to include characters who aren't listed. I generally love everyone in these shows and if you want to put them in the fic, then go for it.

Fandom-specific notes: )
I'm honestly thrilled to get any fic for any of these fandoms, I swear. I can't write prompts for each fandom individually, but here are some things I love:

  • Anything from the gennest gen up to the filthiest porn

  • Hurt/comfort (but not hurt without comfort)

  • Tropes/cliches like only one bed, friends to lovers, enemies to lovers, fake dating...

  • Humor, joy, happiness, happy endings, happy AUs of sad events in canon

  • Jewish content is not required but boy howdy would I LOVE to see any interaction between a Jewish character and any of these fandoms (meeting a Jew, getting caught up in a holiday celebration, etc.)

Thank you!

Hello, dear friends! You can ignore this, because it's a test for a possible new family account keeping track of the amazing arts and crafts my in-laws have accumulated over the years.

These are hosted on Dreamwidth:

This is hosted on Facebook:

This is hosted on Google Drive:

mara: (Daddy and Yael)
My little darling baby Yael...has just left with her father to move into her college dorm for her freshman year. ::dries up and blows away in the wind::

I cried a little bit and Barak hugged me because he's a sweetie pie.

Yael is the best daughter any mom could ever ask for. She's smart and funny and stubborn...er, I mean persistent. She's organized and competent and caring. She adopts neurodivergent people everywhere she goes. She's going to be amazing and wonderful and have a great time and FUCK, I'm going to miss her.

She gently reminded me that we have text and Discord and email and kindly didn't roll her eyes too much when I got maudlin.
Me: Sweetie, please give me your address at college.

Her: They gave us all a very specific way to send mail to campus.

Me, waiting: And?

Her: Oh, I emailed it to you. I thought that was obvious.

Me: Not so much.

Also me: [stares at my email]

Also me: [watches the email come in and then disappear] Er...

Her: What?

Me: My email ate it.

Her: Did you check your spam folder?

Me: [stares at her in "And who taught you how to use your computer?"] Yes, dear.

Her: [heavy sigh] I'll send it again.

Me: [stares at my email]

Also me: [watches the email come in and disappear] Look, could you just write it on a piece of paper like we're living in the 19th century?

Avi, from the other room: Use a fountain pen!

Me: Don't laugh, I have fountain pens.

Her: [eyeroll to infinity]

So, for reasons I can't explain, I still occasionally read local posts on NextDoor. (For those of you blissfully unaware of this phenomenon, think of it as Twitter, except everyone lives within 5 miles of your home.)

There was an (unintentionally) hilarious post the other day, screaming about the county schools teaching kids how to have sex. Those of you who are Gen X probably had an immediate flashback to the 80s and wondered if this woman wanted to ban dancing. I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Anyway, what was this woman's evidence for how harmful our sex ed curriculum (which both of my kids have gone through, BTW) was? Her middle schooler said that the kids came out of the class and started offering to have sex with each other.

::blinks:: Has she ever met any middle school kids? Because I guarantee that's not what happened. Those of you who know kids, see which scenario you think is more plausible:

1) Middle school kids (say, 13 or so) propositioned each other in the hallway immediately after health class.

2) Middle school kids came out of sex ed a little embarrassed and not sure what to say or do. One or two class clowns started joking about having sex with each other and other kids picked up on the joke and repeated it.

I know which one I believe. ::snort:: A few sensible commenters on the thread said something similar, but were drowned out by the ridiculous people screaming about this.

For the record:

  • You can view the curriculum before the class. They send multiple notices home to let you know this.

  • You can legally opt your kid out of sex ed. They also send multiple notices home about this.

On a related note, I was super pleased when our school system sent out a note to every single person in their weekly message that said (paraphrasing here) "we're not fucking banning books just because you got your panties in a twist over CRT or LGBTQ people existing, so piss off." It closed with a lovely sentence along the lines of "And we're not gonna send a note home every time your kid reads an inclusive book."

I have plenty of issues with MCPS, but sometimes they get things right :)
mara: (HFS Bible)
Thank you, darling writer! If you match on one of these fandoms, honestly, you probably already know me, so this is kind of pointless. But just in case...

Look, I'm gonna be thrilled you wrote me something, so don't stress too much. For all the fandoms I chose, I'm basically looking for something fun with a happy ending. I don't generally care which characters you use, whether you write gen or shippy, etc.

I also don't care about plausibility. Wanna make a random Japanese or Thai character Jewish? Sure, go for it! Are there suddenly viziers in China? Awesome! Handwave away anything inconvenient if it'll make the story fun for you to write. If you need a convenient black hole to spit out something useful to the plot, I'm totally there with you. Happens all the time!

I guess my first preference is to have specific Jewish content or characters, but if you're not comfortable doing that with whatever fandom(s) we matched on, I'm thrilled with great female characters and evil viziers too :)

Have fun and I can't wait to read your stories!

Purimgifts!

Whew! I added quite a random assortment of fandoms for this exchange, so I would guess you're probably a little baffled. Basically, I added a bunch of fandoms with awesome women and a few fandoms I love that have Jewish characters (e.g., X-Men, Sesame Street, West Wing), and I'm hoping you'll get inspired.

If you wanted to randomly make a canonically non-Jewish character be Jewish, I'm cool with that. If you just want to write about an awesome woman, I'm cool with that. If you've got an evil vizier to write about, I'd be THRILLED.

My only real DNWs are major angst, character death, and Christianity ::snerk::

As you can see on my AO3 account, I get around fandom-wise. I would honestly be delighted to receive a fic in *any* fandom listed there. Have fun!

There were both SO MUCH FUN to write, I can't even begin to tell you :)
I'd be thrilled for fandom to return to DW. I'm already loving all the new posts I've seen today. ::bounces with glee::

An important note about me: I have a mind like a steel sieve. Unless your username is one I know super super well or is closely related to your real name, there's a very good chance I can't remember who you are. It's not personal, I swear. It's just me being a dork.

So if I tell you things you already know because (say) we've been talking on FB for the last three years or I assume you know something that you don't (because I *think* we've been talking on FB for the last three years) be kind to a tired old lady ::snerk::
The Unconventional Courtship fic challenge is about a million times more fun than it should be ;) If you've never tried it, I would urge you to sign up now for a posting date in late August/September.

It's a panfandom challenge, because you're not assigned a recipient, so you don't have to worry about pleasing a specific recipient and you can pick absolutely whatever fandom you happen to be obsessed with at the moment and you can change your mind about what fandom you choose at any point :)

The gimmick is that you scroll through romance novel teasers from Harlequin or Mills & Boone until you find one that tickles your fancy. Then you replace the characters with the characters of your choice and write a story (probably AU but it doesn't have to be!) around that summary. You can, of course, change the genders of the characters if you feel like writing non-het fic.

I will repeat: This is SO MUCH FUN.

Last year I wrote Most Shy and Ladylike, an Ultraman Mebius AU, and in 2014 I wrote The Black Sheep's Inheritance, a Power Rangers Jungle Fury AU.

You can take the prompt seriously or you can be ridiculous (or you can be me and do both at the same time). You'll be surprised how easy it is to find a prompt that works for your fave ship. In fact, in my experience, the problem is choosing just one. I have an entire Word doc of prompts and pairing ideas.

Here are a few prompts that I love for various pairings (and if any of them work for you, please feel free to use them, because no two Unconventional Courtship fics is going to be the same):

Lying in Bed -Jo Leigh

To find a blackmailer, FBI agent Ryan Vail is going undercover as part of a “couple” at an intimacy retreat. But when Ryan meets his “wife” he knows he's in big trouble - this investigation looks set to be one irresistible temptation!

Emergency: Wife Lost and Found - Carol Marinelli

Marriage reunited – in A&E!

Every emergency doctor dreaded recognising someone in Casualty – even cool-headed consultant James Morrell. But he was doubly shocked when the unconscious patient he was asked to treat was instantly familiar. It was his ex-wife!

Dr Lorna McClelland hated being ill, hated being stuck in a hospital bed, but above all she hated having to rely on James. Then, as she recovered, all the wonderful things about their marriage came flooding back…

The Virgin's Proposal - Shirley Jump

HOW COULD HE TURN DOWN A BANANA IN DISTRESS?

Successful rebel Matt Webster came to make peace with his past and his family. But he'd never thought that to appear "respectable," he'd become the pretend fiancé of a banana-wearing storeowner! Yet how could he refuse spunky Katie Dole, the woman under the costume, when she kissed him so sweetly— and so thoroughly—in the spaghetti aisle of the supermarket?
Her blue-green gaze implored him to play the role of lover to show up her ex-fiancé. But remembering the kisses they shared were supposed to be pretend became more difficult, when all Matt wanted to do was to make love to the appealing Katie! Was the virgin's proposal turning into something…real?
mara: (Yuletide sour cream applesauce)
Because I feel the need to write something cheerful rather than gloomy, I bring you a Yuletide retrospective. I must admit I hadn't thought about how many years I'd been doing Yuletide. Wow. It truly is the most wonderful time of the year.

2005NYR: Al Dente. Secret Adventures of Jules Verne. Going back to my roots and having some fun. This was back when you had to write a NYR fic to get into the main exchange.

2005: The Beginning of Education. A Max Headroom fic, and not my best Yuletide fic ever. I realized at that point that I just can't write dystopian stuff.

2007: Held Together but Separable. Team as family. Hi, Mara's favorite kink! You explain why she wrote so much Batverse, huh? I got to write some folks I almost never write about, so that was awesome.

Also 2007: A Vote for Survival. I do love me some Liaden 'verse :) Given the year, I'm kind of surprised I wrote a pregnancy fic. Although...now that I think about it, the exact discussion kinda makes sense.

2008: Acuteness of Desire. More Secret Adventures of Jules Verne. In which I attempt a pairing I don't ship at all and do a halfway decent job, considering. I almost convinced myself!

2009: End in Lovers Meeting. Jaime Reyes is a wonderful boy and a great Blue Beetle and OMG it was so fun to write this.

Also 2009: If I Forget Thee. Tony Foster/Lee Nicholas are one of my fave canon gay couples and this was also super fun. I crowdsourced the solution to the problem I'd created for the characters and it worked great.

2010: Beside My Lonely Fire. Blood Ties fic. It's not often I write Henry/Mike without Vicki, but this worked better than I thought.

2010 Madness: His Ready Help Was Always Nigh. Wasn't this the year Perri and I wrote each other fics in this same book fandom? The Kris Longknife series is a lot of fun.

2011: The Substitute for Genius. Here's the time I tried to write a pairing I don't ship and had to give up. I think the fic is pretty funny anyway. When Miles Vorkosigan is involved, how can it not be?

2012: That Quick Comradeship of Letters Sorcery and Cecelia fic always makes me happy. Once again I tried a pairing I don't ship and it worked in an interesting fashion.

2014: A Captain Bold. Heh. I knew exactly what my recipient wanted from a Gokaiger fic and I wrote it. OT6 4eva!

2015: Nor Any Drop to Drink. Zyuranger! I love Geki and Goushi and it was a ton of fun to write them in Tokyo.

2016: Thy Smile Be Lost to Sight. This is the fic I described as being so very much by me, it might as well be an acrostic spelling out "This fic was written by Mara." It's Captain Marvelous (Gokaiger) and Godai Yuusuke (Kuuga) talking in a restaurant. It just needed accidental baby acquisition or a sex scene to be more me ;)

Huh. I thought Portents of Magic and Might was also a Yuletide fic, but...maybe not? I wonder if it's that missing 2006 fic? Because I was pretty sure I wrote for the challenge that year, but I couldn't find anything. Anyway, it's Sorcery and Cecelia and actually has a plot and I love it to pieces.
mara: (Yuletide sour cream applesauce)
No comment on the election. Just...no.

Right now I'm focused on next weekend, which is my niece Atara's bat mitzvah in New York. My MIL bought Yael some super adorable dresses for the event, so she's going to look fabulous.

I decided I deserved one new dress too and I found one that was (almost) perfect. Purple, classy, gorgeous, knee-length. The only problem is that it's sleeveless :( And it's an Orthodox shul, so sleeveless won't do.

In fact, all the dresses I liked in the store today were sleeveless. There were a few dresses with short sleeves and one or two with long sleeves, but apparently women don't get cold arms in the fall and winter? At least that's what dressmakers seem to believe.

So I guess it's back to my old dresses. Ah well.

Okay, I'm going to go back to knitting hats and scarves to donate to charity and watching Ninpuu Sentai Hurricanger. Because adorable ninja failbots and knitting will help my mood.
If, in the past year, I have done anything to hurt or offend you, whether intentionally or unintentionally, I beg your forgiveness. I hope that in the coming year I may do better.

In return, I will do my best to forget all slights, grudges, and hard feelings I have stored up throughout the year, so that I may begin the year with a clean slate and a clear mind.

G'mar hatima tova and shana tova. May the coming year bring joy and happiness to everyone.
mara: (Yuletide sour cream applesauce)
Dear Yule Goat:

I love you already because these are fandoms that need more fic! I'm honestly going to be happy with whatever you choose to write, so don't feel constrained by what I write here, but if you are the kind of writer who likes the optional details, here they are.

Optional details are optional! )

I haven't decided if I'm going to request any other fandoms...

I still have many important and serious things to deal with in RL, but I want to take a moment and share with you that a Christian lady on FB just tried to argue with me that she can't accept transgender people...by quoting the Torah.

::facepalm:: She was gifted in return with a multi-paragraph rant about how as long as she eats bread on Passover and works on Saturday, she probably shouldn't try that particular argument on me.

Seriously now, what are they teaching evangelical Christians these days??? "Don't quote Torah at the atheist Jew" should be up there with "Don't get involved in a land war in Asia"! Neither one has ever led anywhere you're going to enjoy, folks.
