📍 Canmore, Alberta
📅 April 10–12, 2026
A getaway created just for T1D moms, a chance to exhale, laugh, breathe in the mountains, and spend a weekend being supported instead of being on diabetes duty 24/7.
This retreat blends calm, community, and meaningful conversations with cozy flexibility and the stunning backdrop of the Rockies.
We’ll gather at a Canmore restaurant called Iron Goat Pub and Grill to kick off the weekend with good food and warm conversation. Because we will be a large group dinner will be family style dining. Dinner and soft drinks included. Will need to pay for any extra drinks.
After dinner, enjoy free time to explore Canmore or settle into your hotel for rest.
Choose your own accommodations based on your budget and preferences.
I myself will be staying at Coast Canmore Hotel and Conference Centre.

Hi I’m Lana Smid, founder of Doing Diabetes Different. T1D mom, and advocate for parents navigating the challenges of Type 1 Diabetes.
Both of my kids were diagnosed at age 7 one in 2018, the other in 2019. Those early days were devastating. Our family faced grief, emotional struggles, and a sense of isolation. I often felt very alone, wishing for a support system of others who truly understood what it’s like to parent a child with T1D.
The name Doing Diabetes Different came to me during a time of burnout, stress, and overwhelm. My motto is simple: when something isn’t working, do something different. That mindset has helped our family navigate challenges, and today, my kids (now 13 and 14) are on Dexcom, with one my son on tslim and my daughter recently switched to Omnipod and is looping. The teenage years have been tough...and this last year I have needed to plan my own breaks to make sure I maintain my health and ability to manage! It has been a dream for a few years since I attended Family Dcamp to plan a retreat just for the moms. So excited to make this a reality!
Over the years, I’ve been honoured to support other parents through events and programs, including my 8-week group The T1D Mom Makeover. My goal is to create spaces where moms feel supported, seen, and reminded that they don’t have to do it all alone.
This retreat is born from that same mission: a weekend for T1D moms to rest, recharge and reconnect. To feel understood, and to leave with practical tools, inspiration, and a renewed sense of calm.
