For the March minichallenge on hurt/comfort bingo! From recent fandoms, and very old ones, some I've been active in, and some I've only read a few things that stuck with me: 15 recs (13 fic, 2 vids)

Kidnapping

Thunder in the Dark - by naye (Guardian)
Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan – ZYL is kidnapped, circa ep21. He’s blind, and even when help arrives things only get worse. Super well written, and the middle is gutting and scary, but the ending is warm and everything is okay.

Ever Onwards - by aboxthecolorofheartache (Nirvana in Fire)
Lin Chen is a fox spirit AU (wip) – I love this entire premise, and it’s so very well executed. There’s a lot of MCS h/c at the start, and some for Lin Chen in the middle, and in recent chapters we finally meet Fei Liu, who is rescued from child traffickers. Fei Liu and Lin Chen’s interactions are so well done.

Rest in Pieces or What Rescue Entrails - by AbsoluteNegation (Saiyuki)
Hakkai/Gojyo, Burial arc – right in the middle of Hakkai rescuing Gojyo, with all the little details of that immediate aftermath (also, this title is excellent <3)

Transformed - by opalmatrix (Saiyuki)
Hakkai/Gojyo, Burial arc – later that night, Hakkai’s thoughts on himself and on Gojyo- with bonus sleepy Gojyo. All the right feelings.

Silphium - by EzraTheBlue (Saiyuki)
Gojyo/Kanan/Hakkai. AU where Kanan survives, and Gojyo picks up two strangers from the road that night.
Kanan and Gojyo’s interactions here are really compelling, and the interplay of both sibling’s angst from the fallout of her abduction with Gojyo’s own feelings and past are really deftly done.

Himmelblau - by LapsedPacifist (Ace Attorney)
Edgeworth prosecutes the mafia and he and Klavier are kidnapped. I’m always here for Klavier whump, and I absolutely love prosecutors bonding, and Edgeworth and Klavier are my favorite characters in this whole series of games. I love this.

Mistaken - by Tiefal (Fullmetal Alchemist)
Roy/Ed, post Conquerer of Shamballa (2003 anime timeline) They shagged for the first time the night before, and kidnappers interrupt their morning-after fight. Some truly excellent Roy whump- They’re argu-flirting while Roy is bleeding out, and it’s very nnnngh.

Pirate Vindaloo - by hippediva and elessil (PotC)
Norrington and Jack Sparrow are both shanghaid and forced to join a pirate crew. With gradual bonding, competence, and some gratuitous tropeyness they prevail and get with. Not necessarily in that order XD

Wolf in the House - by JoeLawson (Teen Wolf)
Derek and the Stilinskis, mostly gen/preslash. Derek escapes being kidnapped by fur-traders but his brain has decided being wolf-shaped is a better way to go. This fic is all kinds of emotional (and occasionally physical) h/c that I love. Bonus points for fuzzy wolf cuddles.

Find it in our hearts - by Regann (Teen Wolf)
Derek/Stiles kidfic. Not perhaps one I would rec for hitting my id, but instead for featuring a kidnapped Stiles who spends the whole time he’s kidnapped protecting Derek’s child.

Rescue me [Vid] - by Mary Van Deusen (Man from UNCLE (TV))
Napoleon and Illya in all their 60s tropetastic glory. Abducted, tied up, beat up, rescuing each other, saving the day. I love it.

Friday I'm In Love [Vid] - by lithiumdoll (The Professionals)
Bodie/Doyle- an old and excellent vid full of delicious cop partner tropes, kidnapping among them. Bodie and Doyle are both covered! ‘see your shoes and your spirits rise’ as Bodie kicks out the guy who was hurting Doyle is a great moment.

Forced Soulbond

The Birthday Present - by excessivelyperky (Harry Potter)
Snape epic length genfic – Snape is responsible for the Slytherin students that are made new Death Eaters, and joins their Dark Marks to his in an effort to protect his students. Snape is pretty much my One True Character for HP- this fic is a little bit of a guilty pleasure, for making people care about him, and wanting him to have nice things. Open-ending.

Observations on Sentinels and Guides in Victorian London - by RyuuzaKochou (RDJ Holmes)
Holmes/Watson, Sentinel/Guide AU. Not my favourite Holmes (overpowered in a way that I didn't think suited) but I LOVE the worldbuilding and characterisation for Watson and the other guides. Features an evil Sentinel trying to bond Watson against his will, with other sensory, telepathic, and a variety of physical h/c as well.

Invisibility

Seeds of Old Trees - by Marnie (LOTR)
Celeborn/Galadriel. Long, long past the end of LOTR, Celeborn reaches the Undying Lands. But reunions are not uniformly good, and he stayed in Middle Earth long enough to begin to fade. Marnie’s Celeborn is wonderful, always, but here you can feel his weariness, his disorientation trying to adjust to ‘Elvenhome’ that has not ever been home to him, and trying to reconnect with a Galadriel who resents their time apart.

[community profile] weissvsaiyuki 20th Anniversary battle! So much stuff appearing all the time, and wow, I missed these fandoms more than I realised. 58 and Crawford/Schuldig and more! ♥

[community profile] acdholmesfest is also currently posting! (I am failing at catching up, but I hope to.)

Innumerable Stars is live! Everything Tolkien-- I got a lovely bit of Aragorn&Elrond! Some other gems: This one on Cirdan, this one on Boromir's arrival in Rivendell.

And finally! If a Thranduil ship exists, I'm pretty sure Evandar can convince me of it. XD Gorgeous Legolas/Thranduil h/c (also on AO3). Sensory detail and touch and breath. ♥
lynndyre: Porthos holding Athos (hug!)
--The Wounded Name by DK Broster - a very old, out of print book that I've seen on hurt/comfort rec lists for ages but never found. But [personal profile] dreemyweird is awesome! And this book is fantastic levels of hero worship, manly friendship, BEAUTIFUL hurt/comfort -- There is gentle hair-pulling that sends the pull-ee to sleep. There is hiding from Napoleonic troops together: in haystacks, under troughs in the rain, in a cave by the beach where they fall asleep holding hands. There is loyalty kink, and refusal-to-give-up-ally-even-under-torture, and silly idiots playing with a grasshopper named green-green. If you love tropetastic historical fiction, it's definitely worth trying to find.

--Someone vidded Sir Percy Blakeney to Sharp-Dressed Man! This is hilarious and perfect, I've never seen any vids that really embraced his foppish dandy side- this hits that note exactly while still showing the heroic. ♥ (Also, I would like to steal approximately all of Percy's pretty outfits. Especially the green floor-length dressing gown.)

My other two favourite SP vids:
You Know My Name - Perfect song choice, this vid hits the best notes of the movie itself- and the clip to lyric matching is very, very spot on.
Someone to Fall Back On - low-res but beautiful tribute to the League- the 'nineteen to obey'. Loyalty and friendship and feels.

--For my own reference, I did good: Master and Commander, Murder Rooms, and ACD Holmes. (Someone remembers my fic all the way back from Yami no Matsuei. That's amazing and gratifying.)
lynndyre: the bandit looks up (fall)
Just finished 'Embassy Row' the second of four books in the Mycroft Holmes series by Quinn Fawcett. Mycroft and his assistant, Paterson Guthrie, fight secret societies and political espionage, with bonus assassins etc- these aren't the best written thing out there by any means, but I am weak to Mycroft-centric stories.

This one had a bonus! We get Mycroft's manservant Philip Tyers, and Edmund Sutton, an actor who sometimes stars as Mycroft's double, and they're lowgrade background adorable. I'm tempted to write argumentative h/c. This book had lots of lovely opportunities for h/c, actually! Stabbings, sprains, head injuries, people getting shot. And Mycroft worried about all of his people, which I love.

The plot was... less good, mostly because if I as the reader can figure something out, Mycroft Holmes should be incapable of missing it, but I can admit to myself that the plot is not why I'm reading these.

For a different Mycroft Holmes book, 'Enter the Lion' by Michael Hodel and Sean Wright had very good plotting and interesting historical context, but fell short on characterisation and unnecessary romance.
lynndyre: Are you trying to save my soul? (eucharist)
Now that Holly Poly has been revealed, I can link all my holiday exchange pieces! For your reading/viewing pleasure, I have three of each-

Fic!
The Man in the Second Row - Jeeves and Wooster - priest!Jeeves AU. Bertie still knows exactly where to go for help! Bertie's voice is fun to write.

Current and Cold - Murder Rooms, Dr Bell and Arthur Conan Doyle. Ice and Lightning powers AU! Plumedy and I wrote for each other! This was a pinch hit I was thrilled to get- oh, the friendship and h/c tropes~

Sea Change - Persuasion magical realism AU - Frederick/Anne from Harville's pov, yuletreatlet. I kind of love Harville, and Frederick/Anne hits so many buttons.

Art!
Finrod vs the Werewolf of Sauron - Exactly what it says on the tin. I'm proud of this- it's a scene I've wanted to draw for a long time.

His Arm Has Grown Long - Annatar/Sauron x Celebrimbor. Dark, and death. I like the perspective and composition a lot.

Summoning - Original work, which might be the first time I've put any of that online- This was for Holly Poly, for the ship 'Earth Elemental/Water Elemental/Air Elemental/Fire Elemental/Mortal Elementalist'.

Last year, for ACDHolmesfest, I drew a scene from an adventure. This year, an as-yet-anon awesome person has written the case in question!

My art: The Druids of Lanyon Dolmen

And now with Casefic! The Adventure of the Druids of Lanyon Dolmen
lynndyre: Fennec fox smile (watson)
The Problem of Doctor Frances Henry Lark - An ACD-era Holmesian casefic for [personal profile] mainecoon76 I love playing with historical detail and Watson's voice feels good to write.

Angel, deconstructed - Farfarello art for the [profile] weissvssaiyuki comm, week 5. Also for my bloody_bingo square 'disfigurement/scarification'. But that's pretty standard for Farfarello, right? >.>
lynndyre: Fennec fox smile (Default)
In the Sherlock Holmes Museum at 221B Baker Street, the upper floors are made up as though they were really the 221B sitting room, Holmes' bedroom, Watson's bedroom, etc. (The old-style furnishings, the little can of tooth powder, the whole place is fascinating, the sitting room is FANTASTIC and anyone who has a chance should definitely visit.)

I was looking up my photos for reference in order to write ACD-canon fic, and on the wall of Holmes' bedroom are 13 portraits of Victorian era murderers- I could recognise Crippen and Lizzie Borden off the bat, but I didn't know the others. So I decided to see if I could track them down.

Incidentally? Murderpedia makes for some pretty interesting reading, especially looking through all the stuff from the 1800s and earlier. But it allows you to search by country and lists the date of the murders committed, which I found MUCH more helpful for narrowing things down by photograph than Wiki or straight googling.

Top to bottom and left to right, the portraits on Holmes' wall are:

Florence Maybrick - Convicted of the arsenical poisoning of her husband in 1889, but the conviction was contested.(Arsenic was then regarded by some men as an aphrodisiac and tonic, and James Maybrick had certainly taken it on a regular basis. -wiki) She was released in 1904.
There was speculation that her husband was Jack the Ripper, and a forged diary to that effect was 'found' in the early 1990s.

Dr Edward William Pritchard - Poisoned both his wife and his mother in law with aconite and antimony in 1865. A fellow doctor had suspected him of poisoning them over a long period, but never spoke up, although an anonymous letter was sent to the authorities, leading to Pritchard's arrest. Was suspected of, but never charged with, the earlier murder of a servant, Elizabeth McGrain.

Frederick Deeming - Moved to England from Australia with his wife and 4 children, then murdered them and buried them all under the hearthstones of their house near Liverpool. Married again, took his second wife back to Australia, where he murdered her too! And buried her in cement under the hearth. Was finally apprehended while in possession of a new fiance (and a new barrel of cement). Executed in Old Melbourne Gaol, the same jail as Ned Kelly. (1891-1892)
Deeming was another suggested Ripper suspect.

Franz Muller - Hanged for the first murder committed on a British train. The carriage was first class, closed, and at that time there was no corridor– when the train arrived at Hackney Wick, the compartment was bloody and empty, and the victim Thomas Briggs had been dumped on the tracks, and subsequently died. Muller stole his watch, gold spectacles, and hat, which led to his identification after he sold the chain to a jeweler named Death.

Amelia Dyer - A former nurse who took up baby farming, and later moved on to placing advertisements to adopt unwanted babies of unwed mothers. She would then take the babies home and strangle them with white thread or tape from her sewing basket. Was executed in 1896 for 6 known murders, but speculation on her actual victim total is in the hundreds.

--uncertain-- my photo of this portrait has reflected glare across the torso of the woman. She looks a little like Mary Ann Cotton (believed to have murdered 21 people with arsenic) and a little more like Kate Webster (a maid who murdered her employer, dismembered her body and boiled off most of the flesh before dumping the bones in the Thames), but doesn't quite match either one.

Dr Thomas Neill Cream - A Scottish-Canadian serial killer who became known as 'The Lambeth Poisoner'. Convicted of murder in Chicago in 1881, he was released in 1891, moved to England, and murdered four prostitutes with strychnine between 1891-1892. He was caught after bringing himself to police attention by trying to anonymously frame other doctors for his crimes.

Charles Frederick Peace - A famous burglar and master of disguise for over 20 years. He tamed wild animals, played the violin, carried his burglary tools in his violin case. In 1876 he shot and killed his lover's husband, but escaped capture until two years later when he was caught during a failed robbery. He is mentioned by name in The Adventure of the Illustrious Client.

Henry Wainwright - Murdered his mistress Harriet Lane in 1874, then dug her up and dismembered her body a year later. He was caught when one of the men helping him move the parcels to his brother's house discovered they were full of decomposing body parts.

Hawley Harvey Crippen - In 1910 became the first murderer caught with the aid of wireless communication. He and his mistress tried to escape England after his wife Cora's disappearance was brought to police attention (by a Welsh strongwoman called Vulcana, who is fascinating in her own right), and the remains of the body found in his cellar.

Dr George Henry Lamson - He became a morphine addict after the Crimean war, and poisoned his handicapped brother-in-law with aconite in the Dundee cake in order to gain control of the family money (1881).

--unknown-- The second to last portrait is of a well-dressed woman wearing an enormous hat. She's very distinctive looking, but I haven't managed to ID her yet.

Lizzie Borden - Lizzie Borden took an axe /And gave her mother forty whacks./And when she saw what she had done, /She gave her father forty-one. The actual number of blows were 18-19 and 11, respectively, and Lizzie Borden was declared innocent at her trial, but the murders were never solved.
lynndyre: Sarah Jerand smiling (sarah)
Vampire Prosecutor Min's naked torso gifset - I would like to offer this small ~gnyaaaaaaa~~~ in tribute to a supremely lust-inducing h/c shower moment, and remind myself to catch up on watching VP season 2. For anyone who still hasn't seen S1, both seasons are still on Hulu (and also I think on dramacrazy if you aren't in the US).

Tea at 221b - this tumblr has a lot of really cool Holmesiana, from Granada production stills to photographs of handwritten original drafts to quote comparisons of ACD with Granada or BBC Sherlock - This is the only place I've seen reference the 1895 blog counter other than myself, and there are a lot of other neatly done parallels.

Also, I really miss Jeremy Brett.

Trek Core - I've no idea if I know more than one other person into TOS, but I found the screencap resources here to be excellent. And I may or may not have gone straight for the 'Spock's bedside manner' bits... XD

I'm wondering now if I could write post-episode fallout from Mirror, Mirror for my noncon hurt/comfort bingo square. Non-consensual mindmeld ought to count, I think.

Old Time Radio Shows - I now know I'm not the only person who listened to The Shadow growing up - here are LOADS of old radio programs, I'm not even sure where to start. Sherlock Holmes has the voices of Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, and The Saint has Vincent Price. ^.^

On a more fic-related note, Parallels and Rarepair stories are up! Neither has had author reveals, yet, but I'm in there somewhere. And there's a fair variety of stuff! :)
lynndyre: Sarah Jerand smiling (sarah)
There is now a trailer out for BBC Sherlock season 3~~ It spoils.... basically nothing, since we knew Sherlock was alive anyway. But! The salient point to notice here?

WATSON HAS A MOUSTACHE.

After two seasons, Watson has a moustache. I laughed ridiculously hard. It's the little silly references to ACD canon that keep me loving things about this show despite Sherlock himself being hateful. The puns, the meta of Moriarty's scheme in TRF, John's blog counter stuck on 1895. And, of course, Mycroft. ^.^

I've ended up with two new Mycroft draft ideas, on top of the one working-titled 'the British Government is Downsized'. Hopefully they'll make useful h/c bingo squares.
lynndyre: Fennec fox smile (Default)
Title: Freckle Surgery
Characters: John, Mycroft, and Sherlock
Rating: G is for Gen/general audiences
Notes: For the wild card on my hurt/comfort bingo card - Job-related Trauma. The idea came from a prompt on the BBC Sherlock kink meme, which boiled down to I JUST WANT JOHN REMOVING A CHIP FROM BENEATH MYCROFT'S SHOULDER FRECKLES, IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK?
This is 90% silly banter with pettings, I love BBC Mycroft and the way they all interact. XD

Doctor Watson. I wonder if I might request your expertise in a small matter of exploratory surgery. )

Repost from the kinkmeme, prompt was: John is injured very badly on a case and brought to the nearest hospital. While John is having the emergency operation, Sherlock freaks out in front of the ward - shouts at nurses, reduces other waiting parties to tears etc.
When Mycroft finally shows up, he takes one good look at the chaos and Sherlock's obvious state of panic and pulls Sherlock into a warm, brotherly embrace.
.
366 words, gen, no spoilers. It's fun making them hug.

Reposting from the Sherlock kinkmeme, for the prompt Reichenbach AU where Mycroft does not know that Sherlock survived.
362 words, gen, and the title is Mycroft's fault entirely.

Otherwise known as the collected index of everything I wrote and drew and posted in 2010.

This last year I wrote 18 fics in 5 fandoms. 12 of them were for Tales of Vesperia, which has now topped even Yami no Matsuei as the fandom for which I have written the most stories total.

Tales of Vesperia  )

Tales of the Abyss  )

The Last Remnant  )

Star Ocean 4/ The Last Hope  )

The Great Mouse Detective  )

I have posted 34 pieces of art in various stages of sketchiness, for a total of 11(or 12) fandoms, depending on whether you count ToS twice. ToV came out the top again with 7, followed by FF XII at 6, ToA at 5, and ToS, LR, and SO4 tied at 3. A lot of these were posted in batches.

Art listings and links for Tales of Vesperia, Tales of the Abyss, Tales of Symphonia, Final Fantasy XII, Last Remnant, Star Ocean 4, Basil of Baker Street, Sherlock Holmes and more... )

Reposting from the mythological creatures meme HERE, which turned into 'give me shiny things to draw'. Feel free to keep making suggestions, since I've actually been managing to do all of these!

This first one does not get a cut tag, because it is my favourite. Basil of Baker Street as a vampire, for [personal profile] lady_ganesh. (My Dawson is not exactly movie!Dawson.)

This is not a mythological creature, but whatever, it was fun to draw:

Easily my second favourite, this one turned out awesome - for [personal profile] vangirl:

Actually a bit rubbish because pastels are my nemesis, so excuse the pink hair:
