Pictures and Stories of Life

Sometimes, life is like that.

I’m a retired administrator, pilot and instructor who loves photography, especially landscape photography, something I can now do to my heart’s content!

  • July 9’s Friday Fleurday

It’s always so great at this time of year to see what’s blooming.

Lovely lavender grows for most of the year in this region but its spring and summer blooming periods are gorgeous. And the scent! Wonderful.

The yucca flowers are putting in a very impressive (and tall!) appearance.

The stalk above is about three metres (10 ft) high and blooming beautifully.

I like hydrangeas a lot in all their very pretty forms and this delicate and creamy …

    panicle is no exception.

This isn’t a flower of course but I find the red summer leaves of this coleus plant very bright and attractive in our summer heat. Not technically a bloomer but definitely a colourful summer plant to admire.

    Happy Fleurday.

  • Beach Time

There are several beaches nearby that are  dedicated to dogs and their humans.

After an unusual up-and-down weather pattern for June we have settled into our regularly scheduled hot summer temperatures; right now they’re about 35-38C (95-100F). That means that the dog beaches are very busy as everyone tries to cool off. It’s fun watching them get so much enjoyment out of it.

Can you spot the marmot in the picture above? He wasn’t interested in cooling off in the water, only in making sure that no one came too close!

    Happy Wednesday.

  • Daisy Fresh

    I hope you have …

a daisy fresh and bright new week.

  • Vine Time

A few days ago we visited a couple of wineries to do a bit of buying. In one case, we were visiting a winery that had produced a new red blend we wanted to try.

While we strolled to their shop, we passed these growing, fattening merlot grapes.

I’m not a particular fan of merlot – I prefer it in a blend rather than on its own – but it was great to see these grapes doing well.

We then stopped at a special winery to pick up a case of an old favourite: pinot gris. The first time we tried this particular version of pinot gris – it was pink-tinged and completely lovely – we were enjoying lunch on Granville Island in Vancouver and joked about how we wanted to live where it was made. Fast forward a couple of years and we had a home in the Okanagan Valley from where that lovely wine originated.

Every year since we have gone to that small, family-owned, unassuming winery with its unadorned shop and small but gorgeous deck overlooking Okanagan Lake to purchase a case of the wine that was partially responsible for bringing us here.

And every year we have enjoyed it. Summer in a bottle. The Okanagan in a bottle. Beautiful.

  • July 3’s Friday Fleurday

    Today’s watch word is pink!

    Pink spirea …

    pink paneer roses …

    pink hydrangeas.

I hope you’re in the pink! Happy Friday.

  • The Best of June

I can’t believe June is already gone! Just as when I was a child the spring and summer months still zip by but nevertheless here are some highlights from our lovely June.

    A rainbow …

    some lovely red azealas …

a foot bridge near home peeking through the foliage …

    … lovely cascading hydrangeas …

a red sky at night …

but our delight was some rain!

    And much appreciated, too.

    Farmers’ market yummies …

    an evening blue hour …

and last but not least, a couple of marmots because, well, marmots are cute.

  • Happy Canada Day

    I hope you’re able to …

get out and enjoy our national holiday!

Happy Birthday to our beautiful country …

may it be very long-lived! 🇨🇦

  • Welcome Showers

Recently we have had some overnight rain together with daytime overcast interspersed with a few sunny periods.

I enjoyed watching the clouds begin to move in again over the empty dog beach as the wind picked up a bit and the rain could be felt in the air.

Given our drought and the high 30s (about 100 f) temperatures, any rain has been very welcome.

These Japanese irises thought so, too. Other parts of the country have been experiencing much too much rain, however.

Here’s to hoping that we all get what we need.

  • Rainbow Glory

We finally and thankfully received some rain to cool off our high temperatures, water all our plants and trees and provide a little drought relief.

Another benefit was this lovely rainbow. For a few minutes it was completely glorious before the overcast and rain really set in for the night.

    Happy Sunday.

  • Market Day

I enjoy doing most of our vegetable and fruit shopping at the Saturday Farmers’ Market.

We want to support our local farmers as much as possible and what can I say about the freshness and taste?

It’s fantastic and we often find produce that’s just not sold in grocery stores.

    Happy Saturday.
