Permanent, Introductory Post. Recent Posts are below the fold.

My blog is largely a combination of anime and photography posts, with a smattering of personal activities and random thoughts and links. The blog provides an outlet for my desire to write as well as letting my friends know what is going on in my life – and in my head. As my friends know, I hate to be misunderstood – so I tend to overexplain myself.

All my posts nowadays are public, so I haven't been granting anyone access. Just subscribe, and you see it all. Or unsubscribe any time you get bored. I don't mind either way, and I'm not tracking subscribers or taking anything personally.

And, inversely, I subscribe or unsubscribe from other blogs just to keep my reading list interesting. It's nothing personal if I unsubscribe. I'm just managing my reading / spare time. 😇

Blogging here (LJ/DW) since 2003. About Me.
After 47 years continuously working in IT, I finally retired on April 1, 2024.

I am not on popular social media platforms, except for LinkedIn (which I rarely visit). My other places on the web:

Tsundoku Stack, March 7. 2026

With last year’s remodeling project, a bunch of unread books got shelved into the new bookwall, and there was a Tsundoku Reset last October. Books keep coming, though.

I’ve been underwater since last November, and book reading has been largely on hold, with a few minor exceptions. February was especially busy, and now that those events are over, I feel like I’m finally starting a new year.

With that is a return of the tsundoku stack. Besides books that have been collected over the last four months, I recalled a couple of books from the bookwall – as I really do need to read those. At any rate, the stack is big again.

Here is a list of what I’ve read since last October – mainly manga with one graphic novel and one novel:

ABOUT TSUNDOKU
My tsundoku tag collects my blog posts about my tsundoku collection. The first post was in May 2014. However the tag really kicked off starting in October 2020. I recommend these tsundoku articles: Tsundoku: The Joy of Unread Books by John M. Jennings and Understanding ‘Tsundoku’: The Joy of Buying Books Without Reading Them at Alterpret.

Last night I was puzzled as to why Backblaze wasn’t backing up Homura II. But it was late, and I decided to follow up in the morning.

This morning, no backup was occurring, and I forced a Backup Now. After a few minutes of wheels turning, everything stopped again. Backblaze reported 0 files to be backed up.

But I could see that 7.6TB was selected for backup. Could it be that backup was done?

I began the process to request a data restore so I could see what was in the cloud. Amazingly, all 5+ TB of Homura II was there.

I drilled down into the tree structure and confirmed that both folders from TWICE concerts in January 2026 were there.

It appears that Backblaze was smart enough to connect stored data from Homura (I) with the new Homura II drive. All my Lightroom data is backed up to the cloud – and I even know how to do a restore from that backup!

(They say you should always test your backup with a restore. Consider my backup tested.)

A major storage change necessitated an update to my Home Computing Environment Diagram:

A minor change is that I removed the CalDigit TS3 Plus hub that had hosted memory card readers. I found that the memory card readers got warm while they were always plugged in, so I decided I’d just plug them in as needed. And the USB-C ports on Belldandy’s front panel made it convenient for plugging in all USB-C cables. The hub was no longer needed.

Because I removed the CalDigit hub from Belldandy, that opened up a Thunderbolt 5 port, and I direct-connected Homura II to the newly opened port instead of going through the TB5 hub. This explains why I had to relocate the Pegasus M4 closer to the Mac Studio, as the RAID unit's short Thunderbolt cable easily reached the hub but wasn't long enough to reach the back of the Mac Studio.

What do you do when all your photos, stored and managed in Adobe Lightroom, disappear in a flash? (Besides cry, of course.)

My Lightroom Photo Library has 211,500+ photos from 2008 to 2026. It takes up 5.83TB. Yeah, it’s a lot. And it’s a shock when those numbers drop to zero.

It’s the last day of my month – and I have to say that it was a great month overall (if we ignore how much time I spent on PDXWLF... but other than that...) I had some excellent indulgences – and then my friends and family spoiled me as well.

My kids loaded me up with books I wanted, and Trisha and Nancy lavished me with fancy caramels. (My tsundoku stack is again huge – but we’re not talking about that right now.)

On Sunday, my kids and I celebrated my birthday with our favorite pizza. I got our usual order. With 18% tip, the total bill snuggled in just under $100, but I don’t mind. It’s worth it to us.

I also have a coupon from Abby’s for a free mini pizza for my birthday, so I’ll be making a return trip tomorrow. Actually, I have several coupons/offers for free birthday food – and they all expire on March 5, so I think I’m set for lunches for next week.

The month was too busy with the PDXWLF overload – but this is the last time, and next year Angel’s Month will be more relaxing. The trend is good. This year, I enjoyed being spoiled – a lot.

For a tech person, I’m pretty old school when it comes to certain things. For example, I don’t subscribe to any of the streaming music services (although I do have YouTube Music as part of my YouTube Premium subscription). Apple Music is especially problematic as Apple actually removes your own copies of music from the Apple Music app and replaces those songs with its own master copies – whether you like it or not. It’s possible to lose unique or special versions of songs in your library.

So I’ll never subscribe to Apple Music – and I manage my music library the way I always have since the days of ripping CDs and filling my iPod. I have too much music to download it all to my iPhone, so I sync only selected playlists and albums.

Years ago my playlists started getting corrupted. The songs were correct and played properly – but some (maybe half?) of the song/album cover artwork got randomly replaced by cover art from a different song in my library. It was super annoying – it’s been super annoying for years. But the music played fine, and I largely ignored it.

I had made a couple attempts to research a fix, but what I was told to do seemed like a horrid and dangerous pain – so I didn’t even make the attempt.

Today, though, I decided to research the situation again. I was a little more confident now that I’m armed with Kagi. I did a search for iphone music showing wrong album cover, and the top three results were immediately informative and useful.

So on my iPhone I went into Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Music > Edit > All Songs and deleted all the songs. Then I connected the iPhone to my Mac and resync’d all of my playlists – twice. (I’ve learned that I need to activate the SYNC action two times, and it’s the second time the app Syncs that the music gets transferred.) The Music app informed me that it was downloading 2000 songs to my iPhone.

When that was done, I checked my phone – and all album covers are correct! I’m very happy about this!

I’m pretty happy with Kagi, too.

I really dislike doing “coverage” photography – even moreso in poor lighting conditions. I have to overshoot – a lot. And then I have to deal the mess.

Good weather meant I could leave the D810s at home and go with my mirrorless cameras. I packed the same kit I used on Wednesday: the Nikon Z8 with NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S lens for close-quarters work and the little Nikon Z6 with the NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.8S lens for portrait work.

The rain has returned – light, intermittent rain. I was loathe to use the Hydrophobia rain cover again. I decided to gamble and use my Nikon D810s in the rain. They are pro cameras, weather-sealed – and theoretically they’ll do fine in light rain – for a short while. In my camera kit I keep a terry washcloth so that I can wipe down the cameras if they get wet. The D810s are pretty rugged, and I was going to let them earn their keep.

Wednesday night’s mission was also simple – a single event – the JaJa Winter Light Jam at JaJa PDX. While the event ran from 7 pm to 11 pm, my experience was that I wouldn’t need more than an hour to get enough photos to document the event.
