A country boy by birth and by choice, Gary spent his youth working on the family farm, for local farmers and ranchers, on horseback or playing sports. Offered scholarships in Agriculture and Advertising Design, he opted for the bright lights and big city. Eight years in the advertising field convinced him that wasn’t where he wanted to be.

Gary freelanced in design and illustration, converted his love of writing for advertising to a newspaper column about the country lifestyle. He has also worked as a ranch manager, cowboy, rancher, and horse trainer. An avid painter and author, Gary shares his talents through mentoring others, is a past president of the Western Art Guild and Idaho Writers League and is an active member of Western Writers of America.

Gary and his wife, Margie are the parents of four children and ten grandchildren and have traveled extensively throughout Europe, Great Britain and the United States.

More from Monique

Chase Your Dreams West: A Ginnie West Adventure took me too long to finish. I was working on it when one of my sons was killed in a car accident. I paused writing for a few years as our family adjusted to losing Ryan.

An author friend invited me to a writer’s retreat a few years ago, knowing I was stuck and that week unlocked a lot of things for me. Including deciding to change where I placed what is now the first four chapters. I wrote them two books ago thinking they would make a great denouement, but after my son’s death, I realized they would make a better beginning.

This book is a little different from the first four as Ginnie explores horsemanship training with her mare, Calliope–with her dad’s blessing, and perhaps is given a little help from her mom. Ginnie is given back one of her mom’s journals and gets to know the mom she doesn’t really remember and her dad didn’t really talk about… until recently.

Author Interview

When/how did you decide to become a writer?

I don’t remember there being any one instance. At some point I discovered that stories and words are powerful and that life is better with good ones. When I realized my stories made people laugh and cry and could make a real difference, if only for a short while, I shared/wrote more of them.

Which author has most influenced your own writing?

Patrick McManus. He gave me a wonderful review on a short story I had written and implored me to continue.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

Everyone I meet is a potential MC, so I always carry a sketchbook and mechanical pencil.

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

Like a farmer. Up before dawn and work until I drop.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

I’m a pantser who knows my stories benefit from a little plotting.

Do you have a favorite or special place to write?

In my art studio at home where I’m surrounded by works in varying stages of progress. There’s also some inspiring sunrises and sunsets out my picture window.

Describe your book in five words.

“Sometimes destiny is covered in dust.” (Yeah, I know that’s six but I also have a problem with rules and regs.)

Which one of your characters speaks most to your heart? Why?

Scoot Merritt (90 Days in the Pen) and CD Broken Lance in the West’s series because they’re actually me with the rough edges chipped away.

Do you ever hide things in your stories for readers to find?

I do. Each of my stories has insight I discovered on my own or was shared with me that I hope brightens or empowers the lives of our readers.

Who was/is your biggest inspiration?

My Danish great-grandfather I never met. I’m writing a book about him titled “From Viking to Titan”.

Do you have a favorite Bible verse, or is there a particular Bible story that really resonates with you?

The Prodigal Son. Get out of your comfort zone and experience the world, you’ll  appreciate your roots more.

If you could live inside a book, which one would it be?

Any of my Ginnie West books. Because like Uncle Ben says: “When you’re here, you’re family.”

A lot of readers and reviewers say they wish the Wests could be their family, friends  or neighbors. I’ve had several readers tell me that ‘The Heart of the Wests’ or’ The Heart’ (the West’s farm) makes them feel safe, loved, and cherished, even when things are hard.

Homes should be like that–and a lot of homes aren’t.

If you could meet one author, living or passed, who would it be?

Mark Twain

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Someone needs to read/hear the story you feel compelled to write… so write it. 😉

Hi Sarah,

About the Author

zd_hpbaEA

Chris Posti writes award-winning fiction about real-life women experiencing the joys and challenges of their friendships, families, careers, and later-in-life romances. Before pivoting to novels, she was a self-employed career & executive coach and wrote three nonfiction books. For 20+ years, she also penned a Sunday newspaper column.

More from Chris

In all the contemporary women’s fiction you’ve ever read, can you think of a single novel that features three women over 55 as the main characters?

Hmm.

Still thinking?

Until I wrote my series, I hadn’t come across any, either.

Being over 55 myself, I decided to fill that void by writing about older women who still have a lot of juice left in them—women who stick by their friends, overcome challenges, care for aging parents, grow in their faith, champion their hometown, and have second chances at love.

In other words, Maybe Now, Maybe Never is all about characters I relate to, and if you’re a woman of a certain age, I believe you will too.

This is the second book in the Next Act trilogy. The first, Falling Apart, Falling for You, was released in 2022, and the third, ’Tis the Time, ’Tis the Season was just released in October. It will also be on a blog tour starting November 22.

Come alongside these women. I think you’ll enjoy their journeys.

Author Interview

Describe your book in five words.

Real-life mature-age women, still growing.

Do you have a favorite Bible verse?

I have a journal filled with favorite Bible verses, each of them with a drawing on the opposing page. Which one of them is my favorite depends on many factors, but Romans 12:1-2 in which Paul tells us to offer our bodies as living sacrifices, not conforming to the pattern of this world, and being transformed by the renewing of our minds is the verse I’ve repeated the most.

If you could meet one author, living or passed, who would it be?

Mark Twain. I always loved his way with words and his sense of humor, especially knowing he suffered many tragedies in his personal life. As a child, I even had a deck of playing cards that had pictures of various famous authors on each card. Mark Twain, of course, was one of them.

What advice would you give aspiring writers?

There’s no need to go it alone. Develop relationships with other writers. There is so much to learn, and a group will enable everyone to accelerate. The writer’s journey is not an easy one. You will treasure others’ support in more ways than you can imagine. If you read the Acknowledgments page at the front of any book, you’ll almost always notice the author thanks her tribe.

Who was/is your biggest inspiration?

So many people, in so many ways, but Debbie Macomber and Deborah Raney have inspired me most of all. They are both wonderful writers and wonderful women.

More from Karen

101 Questions

In Falling for a Bossy Cowboy, Derin Vargas desperately wants to change how he sees and interacts with women. One of his buddies recommended an app for 101 Questions to Ask on a Date.

When I incorporated this into the novel, the interactions between Madison and Derin became so much easier (and fun!) to write. I searched for new questions and added them with answers from the character’s point of view.

But where did this idea come from? A marriage seminar. I highly recommend using 101 questions for any couple, married or just dating. It’s a great way to get to know the person you’re with, without all the awkward “what do we talk about?”.

I hope you enjoy this excerpt from Falling for a Bossy Cowboy from Madison Moore’s point of view.

______

Madison watched as Derin pulled his phone from his shirt pocket, swiping and tapping a few times. Then he looked up, expression serious, and asked the most bizarre question.

“If you were stranded on a deserted island and could choose any three things to have with you, what would you pick and why?”

“What?” Her eyes rounded.

“You heard the question, Madi.”

She chewed slowly, mulling it over.

“That’s hard.”

“Right?” He chuckled.

“What would you pick?”

“No dodging it. I’ll answer after you do.”

“Ugh. Let’s assume I have food and water.”

Derin narrowed his eyes and conceded.

“My Bible.”

He rolled his eyes.

“What? It’s a legit answer.”

“So says every church goer. Next?”

“You wouldn’t?”

He wagged a finger at her as he stabbed a chunk of roast before popping it in his mouth.

“Chocolate.”

Derin tossed his head back and chuckled loudly. So much so that a few heads turned their direction. “Women.”

“And a Costco-sized bag of ground coffee.”

“How are you making the coffee?”

“I don’t know. I’m sure I could figure it out.”

Madison pushed her empty plate away. “Your turn.”

“First choice? You.”

Heat flamed her cheeks. What was he saying?

“Second choice would be Djano.”

Madison quirked an eyebrow.

“My horse. And that’s only because you put the stipulation that food and water aren’t an issue. So, he won’t starve.”

She snorted. “Me and your horse.”

“Yup. And my hat. That’s it.”

“Me, your horse, and your hat.” She shook her head. “Why me?”

Derin’s eyes glinted with mirth. “You’re insanely beautiful. Smart. Very entertaining.”

Her cheeks warmed at the compliment.

“We would fight like cats and dogs.”

He shook his head. “I’m not buying that.”

“I can’t stand you.”

“Not buying that either.” Derin grinned. “Here’s another one. Have you ever won an award for a sport?”

Madison snatched up the phone. “Huh. That’s really the question. What is this?”

“One hundred and one questions to ask on a date.”

“Is this a date?”

“Welcome to the party, Madi.”

Heat warmed her face. Derin was one of a kind. She shook her head and handed him his phone.

Author Interview

When/how did you decide to become a writer?

In 2010, I experienced a crisis of faith following a minor surgery on my hand. Once I healed from it, I asked God what He wanted me to do since I was not called to be a mom. Through much prayer and searching, I felt the tug to write. A short time later, I wrote A Dream Unfolding, my debut Christian historical romance novel.

And I haven’t stopped writing. Today, I have released over 25 novels spanning several genres including: Christian historical romance, contemporary Christian romance, and contemporary Christian western romance.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Sometimes I think I’m both. 😊

With Falling for a Bossy Cowboy, I had a general idea of the main plot points I wanted to hit. I defined the characters in detail including some elements of their back stories. But the story surprised me with a few twists and turns which turned out beautifully and explained why Derin struggled like he did.

Is there a particular literary period that you’re drawn to (Regency, Victorian, Romantic, Modernism, etc.)? Why?

I’m more drawn to setting than period. I love Arizona and learning about my chosen home state both past and present. All 25+ novels I’ve written are set in Arizona, starting in 1864 through 1900s and contemporary. I enjoy sharing what I’ve learned about the state with others.

Describe your book in five words.

Redeemed cowboy meets rehabbing athlete

What are your hobbies?

When I’m not writing or working as a Software Development Manager, I love reading and photography. My hubby and I enjoy traveling through our home state of Arizona learning more about the history and savoring the scenic views.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Keep writing. The more you write, the better you get. Also, invest in a tool like ProWriting Aid. It will help you improve your writing as you go and it teaches you to become a better writer (unlike other grammar / writing aids).

About the Author

z_4EDHsOg

Rebecca Krusee’s stories appear in Love is a Verb by Gary Chapman, Chicken Soup for the Soul, Guideposts as well as other publishing. Rebecca lives in the majestic Santa Cruz Mountains of California where she enjoys spending quality time with her family, taking a leisurely drive along the Pacific Ocean and exploring her community.

More from Rebecca

I felt lead to write Suddenly Unemployed – 52 Personal Stories of Hope & Encourgagement through Financial Crisis describing our family’s experience with job loss and financial crisis. I know firsthand not having the concentration needed to read a novel while enduring a crisis. My focus was on the basics necessities of shelter, food and clothing. Hence, I wrote fifty two bite size stories that can be read one per week for a year and split the sixteen year journey into three distinct sections of entering, navigating and exiting the crisis.

Although this time period was painful, my trust and faith in God along with personal character grew. These qualities helped navigate me through further trials such as a COVID world, California wildland fire, loss of parents, empty nest syndrome and more.

Some people hide their struggles from others. I chose to openly share our story with the hope it will encourage the readers as they read about God’s goodness woven throughout our book. Perhaps they will say to themselves, “If God carried the Krusees through the toughest storm of their lives, maybe He will carry me and my family too.”

Author Interview

What drew you to the time period that you write about?

I felt the Lord placed on my heart to share our financial crisis to let others in a similar struggle that they are not alone and God cares for them too.

What are your hobbies?

My husband and I have recently become empty nesters. We enjoy sipping a mocha while strolling along the Pacific Ocean near our home in the majestic Santa Cruz Mountains.

Do you prefer traditional books, ebooks, or audiobooks?

Personally, I enjoy meandering through a bookshop looking at all the books, thumbing through them and taking some home to read.

Do you have a favorite Bible verse, or is there a particular Bible story that really resonates with you?

During our financial crisis, I clung to Jeremiah 29:11 as it gave me hope this was only a season. “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.” My hope is my readers will be encouraged that God also has a good plan for them.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

I’d suggest an aspiring writer just start writing. Then, attend a writer’s conference and/or join a critique group to hone your skills.

Author: Carole Brown

Genre: Western Romantic Suspense

Release date: August 20, 2024

He’d never fainted in his life. Hardly ever been sick. Never been afraid to tackle wild animals, untamed horses, or men with guns. But…there was his brother Jeremiah. A person so despicable he’d hope to never see him again. And worse, facing the heartless woman, Penelope, who’d betrayed him in front of the whole town—-standing here now just feet away from him with Jeremiah—well, for the first time in his life, he wanted to run. Fast.

But can Jackson Barlowe find peace in the good things of his life? Or would the two people who had destroyed his past, ruin his life forever?

Click HERE to get your copy!

About the Author

zxfoIxd8Q

Besides being a member and active participant of many writing groups, Carole Brown enjoys mentoring beginning writers. An author of twenty-some, some of which are best selling, award-winning books, she loves to weave suspense, mystery and tough topics into her books, along with a touch of romance and whimsy, and is always on the lookout for outstanding titles and catchy ideas. She’s also published one children’s book and is in two anthologies. She and her husband reside in SE Ohio but have ministered and counseled nationally and internationally. She has found that the traveling and ministering has served her well in writing her novels. Together, they enjoy their grandsons and great granddaughter, traveling, gardening, good food, the simple life, and did she mention their grands?

More from Carole

In Jackson’s Fall, the female protagonist, Gabrielle Autumn, and her Grandparents own a bakery in the small town of Roaring Springs. Although I don’t mention this recipe in the book, it is one that I really believe Grandmama Mayfair would have baked and sold in her shop. And, perhaps, would have taught Gabrielle to make also. It’s totally delicious and diverse in that you can use whatever kind of fruit that you wish.

My mother made it often in our house! A perfect dessert for a historical, western setting…and a modern day family meal. I truly hope you enjoy making and eating it at your supper table.

Mountain Pie

1 cup of self rising flour

¾ cup of sugar

1 stick of butter

¾ cup of milk

Fruit Filling

Melt butter in baking dish

Pour batter over butter

Put fruit or pie filling on top of batter

Bake in moderate oven (around 350 degrees), 15-20 minutes

Serve as is or with ice cream.

Author Interview

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

When I’m working on a book, I keep a daily schedule of my chores and goals for writing. Depending on my time, I schedule alotted word counts in between handling other necessary duties for the day. It works very well for me with many times going over my scheduled word counts. Doing this keeps me focused on getting words/chapters written daily while also accomplishing home duties that need done. I really recommend doing a daily schedule!

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Hmmm. I’m a little of both. I definitely need some plot themes ahead of beginning my books, but I also have found that often good ideas come suddenly to me. Most times, those sudden—pantster—ideas turn out to be the right ones even if I have to adjust them. I keep folders with various information about the book I’m currently writing, and all my “Pantster” ideas are filed in there too, especially if I can’t use them at the moment.

Is there a particular literary period that you’re drawn to (Regency, Victorian, Romantic, Modernism, etc.)? Why?

Yes, there is. One of my very favorites in the WWII era. My mother lived through that time, and it’s always been such a fascinating piece of history to me. I loved learning more, when I did my research, of the slang used, the clothing worn, and many other fun and fascinating things. And the romance for that era makes me want to swoon with happiness.

Secondly, I really enjoy writing books set in the historical romantic western period. The book I’m promoting now (Jackson’s Fall) is the third book in the Troubles of the West series. I hope to begin/continue with more books in this series. There are so many places one can go with books set in the west.

Today’s world is my third enjoyable writing setting. It’s one of my readers’ favorte series, it seems. I think I enjoy placing my characters in small settings the best rather than huge towns.

Describe your book in five words.

Western, romantic, forgiveness, trust, acceptance (of God’s will)

Do you prefer traditional books, ebooks, or audiobooks?

I love listening to audiobooks, especially when traveling, but holding a physical copy of a favorite book in your hand is heartwarming and especially pleasureable. I’ve always loved reading from childhood up, and it’s garnered me some delightful times of cuddling up in a chair and become engrossed in a book you can barely put down when necessary. And audiobooks are great at giving our family quiet, interesting periods of passing the time when traveling by car.
