More from Karen

You’ve Got Mail?

As an author, sometimes you write something so identifiable to readers that you (the author) completely miss the obvious. Yeah, I did that in Falling for a Shy Cowboy.

Since Dylan Vargas, our hero, deals with a speech impediment, I thought a great way to help him connect with his one true love would be through a dating app—one where he keeps avoiding meeting in person. His best friend, Adan, signed him up for the dating app with a profile picture that obscures part of his face. When Dylan looked through the app, he finds Adan’s sister Brisa on the app. Imagine his excitement that his long-term crush was available!

So, Dylan responds to Brisa’s profile as Wrangler92. He’s much more comfortable pouring out his heart through messages in the dating app than fighting with his speech impediment in person. She’s keeping a few secrets of her own through their interactions on the app, creating tension.

And viola! The You’ve-Got-Mail “trope” successfully applied.

If only I had realized that’s what I’d done. It wasn’t until one reviewer wrote, “Who doesn’t like a little You’ve Got Mail in a cowboy romance?”

This is where I face-palmed, laughed out loud, and finally realized my shy cowboy and his one true love are clearly written like the old Meg Ryan & Tom Hanks movie You’ve Got Mail.

Anyway, I will be forever grateful to Jerah A. for pointing out the obvious connection. I hope you enjoy my take on a shy cowboy who woos a single mom a la You’ve Got Mail style.

Author Interview

Thanks so much for hosting me today.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Both? I tend to map out characters and the overall series. Then some books I write with a detailed outline. Others, I just start writing. Lately, I tend to pantser the first few chapters until I feel like I really understand the character. Then I write the outline and finish with it as a guide.

Do you have a favorite or special place to write?

I used to write most of my books in my home office. But the last two years, I’ve been working my day job from the same desk, so I recently set up a space in my fun living room (some people have a formal living room, but we have a fun living room – mid-century modern, bright colors, electric fireplace). I’ll write from my laptop or Remarkable with the fireplace on (but no heat—I live in Arizona!).

Describe your book in five words.

Godly man destined for her.

Do you prefer traditional books, ebooks, or audiobooks?

These days, I like ebooks because I can change the font size to be bigger. I usually only buy paperbacks for work, reference, or Bible study—something I want to take notes in. Audiobooks are great too. I used to listen to them when I had a long commute to my other job. Now I listen to them while I work out. And yes, I occasionally get a funny look if I’m grinning or laughing at a funny moment.

Do you have a favorite Bible verse, or is there a particular Bible story that really resonates with you?

I joke that my life theme passage is Matthew 6:25-31. Maybe one day I will fully learn not to worry about my life. I make strides in this area every year, but still feel like I have a ways to go. If readers notice it comes up often in my novels, now you know why—it’s an area I struggle with.

Book: Here Lyeth (A Lifeline Fantasy Series Book Three. It can be read as a stand alone)

Author: Johanna Frank

Genre: Religious Fantasy / Coming of Age Fantasy

Release date: November 1, 2024

Answers to her identity lie beneath a gravestone; her own.

Something was missing. It was easy for Lexxie to bury that niggling sense, she had all the love and protection a young woman needed. But when the man she thought to be her father spilled a fever-pitched confession, her content and isolated life ended. Angry and heartbroken, she left the people she loved on a mere hint—her true father lived in Vereiteln Dorf, two villages over. Once there, she’s drawn to an unconsecrated graveyard and patches shocking revelations and broken pieces together, and the more she does, the more her presence in this superstitious village becomes a threat. The perils of a noose amid a 1688 witch hunt lay heavy on her shoulders.

Years earlier, in the same village, young Meginhardt succumbs to a vicious attack. Ethereal beings take him on a time-traveling journey to resolve the lad’s deeply rooted struggles. When Meginhardt learns that some woman named Lexxie is the chosen one to carry forward his father’s line of descendants, fits of jealousy ensue—a dream shattered. It should have been him. He becomes frantic to ensure the demise of this undeserving woman. In apparitional form he delivers her a message, face to face.

Her future lyeth in his words.

About the Author

zIs8gS-0Q

Before she started writing, Johanna spent her days working with profit and non-profit organizations, while spending her evenings studying theology part-time. Now she spends her waking hours creating fantastical stories she hopes will touch the lives of her readers. Her goal—to deliver soulful, whimsical, and venturous reads.

More from Johanna

A little heavenly imagination can loosen the chains of life.

My ‘playground’ for creating Here Lyeth was far-reaching, though insulated with firm boundaries. From fictional Germanic villages in days of old in one corner, a low fantasy kingdom where the perished journey to the foot of a guarded gate, in the other.

Admittedly, I took many privileges with beloved values and symbolisms dear to my faith, daring to employ startling imagination for the purpose of enticing generosity of thought for the great …and small …mysteries in life. My favourite, where the waters of a supranatural river flows through time carrying with it various stones, each belonging to a life on Earth, often getting caught in stormy swirls or stuck in a bank of mud, representations of its owner’s personal trials and sufferings.

The story itself, though smattered with biblical senses, is not meant to be a teaching of ways, (I’m not qualified for such!) rather, to provide inklings of encouragement, to set within minds a sublime curiosity—what life might we find after this one?

My hope is you will enjoy the sparkles of divine happenstances, the pulls of faith and the eager wonder of ever-after capers to be pleasing.

Although the third instalment into A Lifeline Fantasy Series as far as publication dates go, Here Lyeth takes the position of first when it comes to the natural flow of time compared to its stand-alone novel-mates, The Gatekeeper’s Descendants and Jophiel’s Secret.

I promise you, Here Lyeth won’t leave you hanging, though it may unearth you a little 🙂

Author Interview

When/how did you decide to become a writer?

I’d carried around two large plastic totes for two decades, moving them from house to house. Masking tape all around them, ‘Private. Do not open. Johanna’s stuff.’ Inside were collections of stories I had started, resource books on writing, descriptions of characters I’d developed and penciled rules for a fantasy setting of heaven. Basically, anything inspirational I thought I might need for that day when I could place the energy required to actually finish a project. One day at work, I’d simply had enough. Announced my retirement (to my own surprise, and a few years earlier than planned). On the first Monday after I retired, I pulled out those totes, ripped off the tape and have never looked back. 😊

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Definitely a pantser. I can’t even follow a recipe. Enough said.

Describe your book in five words.

Imaginative. Inspirational. Clean. Deep. Light-hearted.

Do you prefer traditional books, ebooks, or audiobooks?

Although I download at least one ebook per month, I still think paperback novels are the best. I’ll often refer back to prior pages I’ve read if I need to recall a scene or a secondary character’s name, and with the kindle I own, its not easy to do that. Paperback wins.

Do you have a favorite Bible verse, or is there a particular Bible story that really resonates with you?

Yes I do, and I’m often asked this question. There are many but the one that resonates the most is Isaiah 41:13. “For I am the LORD your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.” NIV

My teenaged daughter carried this verse on her flip phone for spiritual nourishment while going through treatment to challenge osteosarcoma. A shortened version is carved on her gravestone.

Fifteen years later, that scripture still means a great deal and now, I carry it on my iphone.

Thank you, Sarah, for this interview!

About the Author

zXIbVDjrQ

Mary Pat Johns’ writing career began once she retired from years of teaching speech and writing. She’s written devotions for an online publication and had short stories published by Chicken Soup for the Soul. She currently writes a weekly faith column for the local newspaper. Countin’ On Jesse, her first novel debuted in 2023, and book 2 of the Valiant series, Lovin’ On Red, released in release in 2024. God put it in her heart to tell stories of brave veterans and their reintegration into civilian life after suffering the traumas of war.

She lives in South Texas with her husband and their two dapple dachshunds. Her grown children and five grandchildren are useful sorts who keep her grounded with her reading/writing obsession. You can find her at the gym, at her computer, or reading a good book.

More from Mary

I wrote Glitter and the Grouch for two reasons. The first reason was peace of mind. LOL. Two minor characters from Books 1 & 2 of the Valiant series INSISTED on having their own story. Rather, Nat insisted and Silas grudgingly followed. He hated the idea at first, but all’s well that ends well.

The second reason is I absolutely LOVE the Texas Water Safari and follow it every year. When I talked to a friend who competes, he wasn’t sure how I would write a book about it. When I explained it would be a story about two people who fall in love during the race, he grinned from ear to ear and said that scenario had happened a few times.

Author Interview

When/how did you decide to become a writer?

I was still a young girl when I told my mom that I was going to be a famous author when I grew up. LOL. I’m not concerned about being famous anymore, but I have managed the “author” part.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

I’m sure other authors do this as well, but with a first draft, I give myself permission to do it badly. My inner critic is a bully. I have to turn it off so my creativity (always shy and unsure) can blossom.

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

I write best in long afternoon segments. It takes me a while to get started in the mornings, so I usually do short tasks then, and I’m not a night-time writer at all. The only time I vary from that schedule is when I’m on a deadline. Then, I’ll write all day with breaks.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

I’m a little of both. When I start a new work, I have a few characters partially fleshed out, and a couple of plot points, usually the mid-point and the ending. The rest is pantser. I love it when I have a beginning in mind, but that’s only happened once.

Do you have a favorite or special place to write?

Unless, I’m traveling or on vacation, I write in a study I share with my husband. It’s on the second floor of our home and there’s a window directly behind my computer. Squirrels and birds play in a huge oak tree, and I can see my husband’s wood-working shop. When he’s busy on a project, I can hear the buzz of wood-cutting equipment. Our two dachshunds bark at the squirrels or other dogs. The peace of our home is the best place for me to write.

Describe your book in five words.

Fun. Humorous. Interesting. Sweet. Action-filled.

Which one of your characters speaks most to your heart? Why?

Strangely enough, I often identify closer with my male characters, and in Glitter and the Grouch, it would be Silas, the main character. At first, he’s very closed and not terribly compassionate, but he changes because of the race and his close proximity to Natalie. I can relate to Silas’s faults/weaknesses.

Do you ever hide things in your stories for readers to find?

I will often include the title or some form of it in dialogue. Sometimes, I’ll mention the title of another book of the series in a current work. I do it for playful reasons but also on purpose because I like to echo a past theme with a new twist.

What are your hobbies?

I love to read, work crossword puzzles, and I have an on-again/off-again love affair with flower gardening. Aside from those things, spending time with family is my favorite.

Do you prefer traditional books, ebooks, or audiobooks?

If it’s fiction, then I’m all about ebooks, but for Bible study, I prefer hard copies I can mark up and refer back to. At this point, audiobooks aren’t my first choice, but I’m in line at my publishing house to get my series done in audio since so many people prefer them.

About the Author

zY2v39F-A

Keith Perrin, is a Christian Author who loves to tell biblical truths in an entertaining imaginative way, without compromising the reality of the scriptures, which will inspire people to discover the Bible and The Lord Jesus Christ for themselves. Growing up he watched tons of super hero cartons, Saturday afternoon science fiction and monster movies, plus reading marvel comics. His day dreaming and wild imagination would have him experience all sorts of adventures. Soon he would put those adventures to paper, drawing and writing stories of all sorts. By far his biggest inspiration was reading the bible and bible stories at a young age that drew him closer in his relationship with this awesome God who worked might miracles and showed redemption and forgiveness to the flawed people in those stories. Flawed people just like himself. Keith’s calling is to love God, share the Gospel to all who would hear and use his talents to produce fruit for the Kingdom of God!

More from Keith

I am so excited to have readers experience my book. If you are a fantasy, sci-fi, quest or supernatural lover of fiction like myself, this should be a treat, and it is topped off with biblical under and overtones to boot. Creating this world and its characters is fun and rewarding as it helps to bring my imagination alive for others to hopefully experience it in a fun , interesting and thought provoking way. The Prophet Feneer is faced with many trials on his journey through strange lands. He must rely on the faithful invisible hand of God to guide him through heartache, uncertainty, and terrors that await him. Like all of us he has his faults, doubts and sins he must overcome to complete his assignments. The question is, will he survive long enough against the forces set against him and the inner doubts that plague him to bring the light of God to lands held in the grips of horrific darkness!

Author Interview

When/how did you decide to become a writer?

I decided to become a writer as published author back in 2000. I just couldn’t resist the writing bug to produce published work and finished projects. Keep in mind I already had written a few things over the years but procrastinated in completing them for publishing. Seeing autobiographical movies also steered me to do it. I figured if they could write about their lives and it is so interesting then so could I.

Which author has most influenced your own writing?

The Author that most influenced me off the top of my head is J.R.R. Tolkien. His imagination and incredible world building with many realms and from top to bottom and also mixing different mythologies was other worldly to me.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

An interesting writing quirk? Wow, I have to think on that.

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

My work schedule is always hectic. I work really weird hours and don’t get much sleep so I have to write when I can a little here and a little there. It’s tough for sure.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

I am both a plotter and a panster depending on what I am writing. If I have a feel for something and it flows naturally then I punster. If I feel something is going to be a more difficult project in length and complexity then im a plotter.

Do you have a favorite or special place to write?

My favorite place to write is my basement by the warmth of the fireplace. My favorite time to write though when I can stay up late is definitely at night.

Is there a particular literary period that you’re drawn to (Regency, Victorian, Romantic, Modernism, etc.)? Why?

No, not in particular. I kind of draw from several inspirations from several periods that give me inspiration to write about them.

Describe your book in five words.

Spellbinding Supernatural journey of redemption

Which one of your characters speaks most to your heart? Why?

So far Feneer speaks most to my heart but the jury is still out on that since I am still writing the series. The reason why is because he is alone, troubled, and burdened in so many ways. Yet he is powerful, wise compassionate and a true man of God! In other words he is many faceted complex and an immense enigma!

Do you ever hide things in your stories for readers to find?

I hid things for readers to find and or be curious about absolutely. It helps me to write better more complex interwoven stories and gives the readers a lot to think about to try to figure out what this or that truly means.

What are your hobbies?

Obviously I love reading and writing as well as camping, going to wineries and taking wine trails, exploring new cities states and sightseeing on vacations. Stuff like that. Playing video games is fun too, but most of all sharing the Gospel of Christ. That is not a hobby but my ultimate passion!

Who was/is your biggest inspiration?

My biggest inspiration was and is the Lord God Almighty hands down. Without him I can do nothing but through him I have redemption, salvation, security, freedom, love and the best friend and awesome God who saved me from an eternity in hell through the cross of Calvary!

What is your favorite book?

Favorite book, the Bible!

Do you prefer traditional books, ebooks, or audiobooks?

I definitely prefer traditional books and audiobooks. Not so much e-books.

Do you have a favorite Bible verse, or is there a particular Bible story that really resonates with you?

My favorite bible verse perhaps is proverbs 3:5-7. The story of Noah and genesis 6 resonates with me greatly because within those texts are the blueprint for when the Antediluvian world began to birth such monstrous begins that formed the real basis for all they mythologies around the world that most think are just myths and legends. Also how the flood was a merciful rescue mission to stop the total destruction of mankind as a species. Most people do not realize this incredible fact at all.

If you could live inside a book, which one would it be?

I would love to live inside the bible to see and experience all the stories first hand. But not necessarily to be affected by every story. Some of those stories are brutal lol.

If you could meet one author, living or passed, who would it be?

I would probably want to meet Tolkien off the top of my head.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

The advice I would give to aspiring writers is to make time and develop a discipline to write even if it is a little at a time. To enjoy the process by going to places that inspire you to write and locations that involve the subject matter you are writing about. Don’t be afraid to be different and don’t rush the process. You will have difficulties from time to time in writing but through prayer, praise and fasting to the lord you will persevere. Exorcise the gift God gave you to write. Don’t procrastinate and waste it.

Book: A Perfect Flock

Author: Mike Bogue

Genre: Christian Science Fiction

Release date: October 26, 2023

Tuck Jameson vows to stop his brother Clay from joining The Body, a religious cult that uses nanotechnology to turn its members into Christian automatons.

But Clay disappears—and in three days, his nanotechnology conversion will be complete. Desperate to find Clay, Tuck enlists the aid of former high school mentor Adam Shimura, now a black ops agent with potentially mixed motives.

Brother Moody, the cult’s Chief Elder, mobilizes his acolytes against Tuck. Worse, a shocking prophecy ups the ante, making Tuck realize the stakes involve not only him and Clay, but all of America—and perhaps, the world.

About the Author

zIrNQQn2Q

Why does Mike Bogue write speculative fiction? Because he finds it a perfect genre to explore timeless themes and timely science, as well as the collision between technology and faith. When he isn’t writing, he enjoys watching Godzilla movies, singing 1960s pop tunes, and munching Fiber One brownies. Single and retired, Mike lives with his cat Bendi in Western Arkansas, where he and Bendi regularly hold contests to see who can nap the longest in a single day.

More from Mike

“If brainwashing means losing my free will for God’s sake, so be it.”

Thus says a recruit for the religious cult The Body in my novel A Perfect Flock.

When planning the novel, I wondered—should Christians use technology to enhance their moral lives? What if technology forced us to be good? Should we use it? Should we advocate it? Would it make Christians, and therefore the Gospel, more appealing to non-Christians?

A Perfect Flock explores these issues. In the novel, technology that might have been a blessing becomes a curse in the hands of cult leader Brother Moody. Indeed, becoming Moody’s version of a perfect Christian might just cost you your soul.

In A Perfect Flock, you will confront the well-meaning but dark future into which technology may be taking Christians and society; experience a fast-paced quest in which an older brother is determined to save his younger brother from technological enslavement; and face the tension between free will and enforced will—if we had the technology to force others to become Christians, should we?

If you like near-future Christian science fiction novels such as Steven James’ Synapse, I think you’ll enjoy A Perfect Flock.

A technical note: The book was released last October 23, so it is available now.

Best of hopes and dreams,

Mike

Author Interview

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Definitely a plotter. I admire pantsers for what they can do, but if I don’t know where I’m going with a novel, neither will the reader.

I need to work out a beginning, a middle, and an ending before I can flesh out the storyline. Consequently, I create elaborate outlines for my novellas and novels. I write detailed character biographies for all the main characters, particularly the protagonist and the antagonist. In addition, I write out a synopsis of the main plot and all interrelated subplots.

Next, I break down my outline into novel chapters containing one or more scenes. In each scene, I determine who the POV character is and detail what will happen—why it’s important, the conflict, the characters, the outcome (which for the protagonist will usually be a disaster), and what the protagonist will do next. I strive to make sure each of these scenes builds upon one another, the obstacles becoming more dire for the hero as he struggles to achieve his goal.

Plotting helps me write out the climax in shorthand, so that when I get there, I don’t have to wonder, “Now what do I write?” Instead, I can make it as dramatic as it needs to be, culminating in the protagonist overcoming his character flaw and achieving his story goal.

Do you have a favorite or special place to write?

Yes, my bedroom. There, my PC sets upon a computer desk I’ve owned for over two decades. It’s surrounded with a range of writing books, everything from Benjamin Sobieck’s The Writer’s Guide to Weapons to K.M. Weiland’s Structuring Your Novel.

I also have decorated the walls with posters from 1950s and 1960s science fiction movies, including of course the original King Kong vs. Godzilla. Also not be missed are my shelves housing action figures such as Space Ghost, Jonny Quest, and King Ghidorah (Godzilla’s three-headed arch-nemesis).

In addition, I share my writing area with a part-time writing assistant—my rescue cat Bendi. She basically likes to nap in a chair next to my desk seat, and I admit her presence is undeniably soothing.

Who was/is your biggest inspiration?

Many authors inspire me, but the biggest influence on my current fiction writing is Steven James. His Chrisitan science fiction novel Synapse is a masterpiece of blending speculative fiction with spiritual issues. In the novel, an AI entity known as Jordan appears to demonstrate self-awareness, and for all intents and purposes, he appears to be a human being. But does Jordan have a soul? And can he seek divine forgiveness and become a Christian?

Other specific Christan science fiction books that have influenced me include Bill Myers’ Saving Alpha, David Gregory’s The Last Christian, and Jerry Jenkins’ The Valley of the Dry Bones.

Do you prefer traditional books, ebooks, or audiobooks?

Traditional. And yes, this is no doubt because I am old guy who has read traditional books all his life. But I have given ebooks a try. I don’t mind reading an ebook on my PC screen, but I have issues with reading an ebook on my smartphone.

Also, all my life I have practiced bedtime reading, and this just seems more fitting with a traditional book you can hold and turn its pages. Granted, if I were twenty years old, I would probably feel differently.

I still haven’t given audiobooks a whirl. Friends tell me they can be compelling. But I don’t know if I want to trade a traditional night-time book with a disembodied voice.

Describe your book in five words.

I am going to cheat here (sorry) and use three different but linked descriptions of my novel in five words each:

God frowns on coercive evangelism.
God frowns on coercive elders.
God champions free will, always.

In my novel, Brother Moody is the charismatic head of a religious cult called The Body. He uses nanotechnology to turn initiates into supposedly perfect Christians, but they are really anything but.

His ultimate hope is to have airborne nanobots developed that can steal inside anybody’s skull and brand a Christian belief template on their brain—all without the person’s permission. Moody believes it is God’s will that everyone should become a Christian for their own good, and to Hades with free will.

Ms. Snider, thank you for letting me speak to your readers.

Book: The Gamekeeper’s Reluctant Bride

Author: Elva Cobb Martin

Genre: Christian Historical Romance

Release date: September 10, 2024

She fled from a gilded cage, only to find herself trapped in a marriage of obligation.

Helena Allston had it all—wealth, beauty, and a life of luxury on her family’s plantation. But when her father arranges a marriage to a man she despises, Helena takes matters into her own hands, fleeing on horseback, only to find herself half-drowned and memory-less in a simple cottage. And when her memory returns, Helena ends up back where she began—arranged to marry, this time to the handsome gamekeeper who rescued her.

Could there be more than obligation to this marriage? Or is he only after the Windemere Plantation her father promised him?

Gideon Falconer is at a loss when it comes to the stubborn, beautiful woman he rescued from the Ashley River. His predicament only worsens when he returns her to her family’s plantation, where her father shocks him with a demand that Gideon marry his daughter to prevent a scandal. As a man new to his faith, he feels compelled to do the right thing, but his own secrets and the past left behind in England threaten to complicate matters further.

In a marriage that began as a mere obligation, can Helena and Gideon find the strength to let love and trust conquer all, despite a determined enemy’s schemes to wreck their hope?

Elva Cobb Martin is a wife, mother, and grandmother who lives in South Carolina with her husband and a mini-dachshund. A life-long student of history, her favorite city, Charleston, inspires her stories of romance and adventure. Her love of writing grew out of a desire to share exciting stories of courageous characters and communicate truths of the Christian faith to bring hope and encouragement.

More from Elva

In The Gamekeeper’s Reluctant Bride, I planned to develop a rich, spoiled heroine who had everything she wanted—beauty, wealth, reputation, an important Charleston family name, and even membership in a popular church of her day but who had no real relationship with Jesus Christ. Isn’t that like so many in America today with our many blessings and freedom but no real love for Christ, his written Word, or his love for the unborn and his biblical plan for marriage and gender? Yet our name may be on some church roll and we call ourselves Christian. I believe our Mighty God is calling America back to him in faith and obedience to the Bible. I believe He is calling forth godly leaders who will stand for truth and righteousness, but we must go to the polls and help raise them up. America has a mighty history and a covenant cut with God by our founders. Focusing our hearts and minds on Christ gives us courage and confidence, and we can look to the future with hope in our hearts.

Here’s part of a scene showing the “before Christ” Helena with her pride and arrogance after Gideon rescued her from drowning in the river:

Gideon ducked his head at her icy voice. “Look, young woman, I dragged you from the Ashley River and walked miles carrying you in my arms, to this cottage. You were soaked through and through and unconscious.”

She interrupted him. “I don’t want to hear any more of your wild story. Go from my presence and shut the door while I dress.” She pointed to the cabin door, then reached up and touched the lump on her forehead and groaned. “Why did you strike me, sir?” These words came from between gritted teeth.

Gideon’s nostrils flared. “Miss or ma’am, whichever you are, I did not strike you. You must have hit your head on your horse’s neck or a rock when you two jumped into the Ashley. For your information, all I did was save your life, if you’d like to thank me for that.”

Here’s part of Helena’s epiphany:

Captive on the pirate ship, Helena dropped to her knees beside the bed and cried out to God. Her life paraded before her, and tears blinded her eyes. The privileged life she’d led as a wealthy planter’s daughter now seemed frivolous and meaningless. She had never lacked for a thing and had not even imagined there could be such people as the pirate captain who now had her under his control, threatening to sail to the Barbary Coast and sell her to a sultan. Would Gideon and her father ever be able to rescue her before the ship sailed away? A chill rose from her heart to her fingertips. Slavery! Would she end up in slavery? Why had she never considered the poor slaves who met all their needs on the plantation? Ever since she was a child, slaves had done everything to make her family’s life easy and pleasant. Was she now to find out what it would be like to be a slave and at the mercy of someone else’s desires and moods?…Lord Jesus, please forgive me for my proud, selfish, unthankful life. If you’re real, come into my heart, deliver me, help me come to know Your plan and purpose for me.

Like Helena, we can cry out to God in humble repentance and return with our whole heart, and He will always answer. We are never out of the reach of God’s eyes or hand. Here is a simple prayer I invite you to pray for yourself and our nation in this election year:

Father God, I believe Jesus Christ is Your Son you sent to save me from my sins. I repent and turn from them to You and Your Word. Please forgive me and come into my heart, be not only my Savior, but my Lord and director of my decisions, especially my vote for righteous leaders. Help me find a Bible-preaching church family and do my part in bringing America back to You. I believe You are working mightily in my life, family and nation, and I give You praise. Amen

Author Interview

When/how did you decide to become a writer?

You’re going to laugh, but when I was in the 7th grade, I competed with the class in writing a short story. I lived on a farm and loved horses. My simplistic horse story of Dolly who won a race, even with a broken leg, did well in the class contest. That’s when I first thought of becoming a writer. And horses are in most of my stories, as well as sailing ships, pirates and privateers, zesty heroes, and courageous heroines.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

I’m a bit of both. I do a general plotting outline, but expand it as I write and save it in my numbered Chapters and Scenes file. Actually, I have five file folders open on my computer as I write a novel:

a) Manuscript (ms) in progress (The actual story taking shape)
b) Plotting Rough Outline (I brainstormed in the beginning with main characters description)
c) Chapter and Scene List (Where I expand the general plotting outline a lot)
d) Character Names and Places (Continues as I add names of places and minor characters as I write)
e) Appendix (Where I add words or phrases that need a further explanation)

What is your favorite book?

After the Holy Bible, my favorite book(s), especially fiction, would be any series by Eugenia Price or Linda Chaiken, two writers I really appreciate. I also enjoy a newcomer Christian historical author, Colleen Hall.

Do you have a favorite Bible verse, or is there a particular Bible story that really resonates with you?

Psalm 103:1-5 is my most shared and prayed promise that I consider my life verse.
Bless the Lord, O my soul and forget not all His benefits. Who forgives all your iniquities and heals all your diseases. Who redeems your life from destruction and crowns you with loving kindness, who satisfies your mouth with good things and renews your youth like the eagle’s.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

My strong advice would be NEVER GIVE UP! In my late 30’s I wrote the draft of my first novel. Just after finishing that draft the Lord called me and my husband into Christian ministry, and I put that draft and box of research up in my attic for many years. When I retired from full time ministry, a friend reminded me of that draft in the attic. I pulled it down and went to work again on it and attended writer conferences, joined a critique group, and studied writing blogs. Summer of Deception was finally published in my seventies more than thirty years after that first draft. The Gamekeeper’s Reluctant Bride is my 8th novel now at age 80, and we give God the glory. The takeaway to this testimony is you’re never too old for a plan from God and NEVER GIVE UP! I’ve taught in writers’ classes and have on my blog an article series about this entitled Journey to a Book Contract: Five Vital Steps.
