About the Author

Allen Brokken is a teacher at heart, a husband, and a father most of all. He’s a joyful writer by the abundant grace of God. He began writing the Towers of Light series for his own children to help him illustrate the deep truths of the Bible in an engaging and age-appropriate way. He’s dedicated 18 years to volunteer roles in children’s ministry and youth development. Now that his children are off to college, he’s telling stories and sharing clean humor on social media.

More from Allen

As I worked to close out the Towers of Light series, I had to work hard to develop something new and different that still fit the 1800s frontier setting. I had a lot of pressure from my readers to bring a dragon to the prairie. On multiple occasions, I had to remind my biggest fans that there aren’t any dragons on the prairie. But they were insistent that dragons make an appearance.

So, as I put the final touches on the previous book, Wellspring of Life, I thought that the censors spreading evil could bring evil things into the world to corrupt the prairie. So, the concept of a dragon formed from the censor’s smoke made a lot of sense. But what would a “Smoke Dragon” be like? I shared the idea with my Realm Makers critique group, and they helped form something that early feedback says works well. The dragon’s name, The Calamitous Drake, is also an homage to a line from “The Hobbit” that refers to Smaug as a great calamity.

With a dragon flying about, I also had to devise a way for the kids to engage it in the air. This took significant research as I didn’t want to introduce giant eagles or something else that didn’t exist on the frontier. As I investigated different options, I discovered that hot air balloons were more common in the 1800’s than I thought. It turned out they served in minor roles during the Civil War and used a technology they called a gasifier to fill them up. I took some artistic liberty with that, and Lauren, Aiden, and Ethan now had a way to get off the ground to meet the dragon in the air.

This story was so much fun to write, and early reviews from my biggest fans say it was the perfect end to the series.

My Review

If God was for them even the dragon would not stand against them.

Book six in Allen Brokken’s Towers of Light series, Demolishing the Stronghold picks up where Wellspring of Life left off and draws readers into another thrilling adventure, this time to bring the story to its conclusion. Indeed, my only disappointment is that it’s ending! This is exactly the type of book that I would have feasted on as a child, with its perfect blend of action and adventure as well as Christian values and good old-fashioned imagination. These qualities make the Towers of Light series timeless, not restricted to a particular time period. Furthermore, as Brokken explains, he uses titles rather than names for the adults in the story to preserve the flow of the tale when reading aloud, and to make them more relatable to young readers. This series needs to be read in order, and at the beginning of each book in the Towers of Light series there is a summary of each previous book, as well as details about the factions, cast of characters, and world of Zoura.

Being the final book in the series, Demolishing the Stronghold focuses on the theme of victory, but as with any battle between light and darkness, success does not come easily, nor without cost. Brokken skillfully demonstrates the fact that consequences are not always inescapable, and that sacrifices must often be made during the battle. As Lauren, Aiden, Ethan, and their friends learn, doing the right thing is often difficult, requiring a conscious choice that might go against what they would prefer to do, but listening to the still, small voice inside them will always result in the best outcome. In addition, they realize how important it is to work together to accomplish their goals; just as in real life, they cannot do what needs to be done on their own. It takes each person’s skill set and gifts working together to succeed. Given all of this, Demolishing the Stronghold, and the entire Towers of Light series, make for both entertaining and enlightening reading for children, especially, as the situations and dangers that the characters face are akin to parables for the current struggles that kids face, from bullying to betrayal to separation from loved ones.

In Demolishing the Stronghold, the non-stop action is coupled with winsome characters who reflect the qualities of light and darkness while also showing the complexities of human nature. And this pertains to the non-human characters, as well! Brokken is as imaginative in his character building as he is in his world building, adding extra depth and heart to each book in the series, which culminates in this sixth installment. He captures the emotions of the children realistically and believably, and unlike many children’s authors, he neither elevates nor denigrates the adults in the story. They, too, make mistakes and are imperfect, and they do not always have all the answers. In Demolishing the Stronghold, Lauren receives recognition for her leadership by the adults and is given additional responsibility in decision-making, which parallels the increased responsibility and privilege accorded to kids in contemporary society. Also, Brokken does a wonderful job of providing various perspectives of the characters from all sides of the conflict, be it light, darkness, or neutrality, and in so doing offers insight into each, which is important to understand. For these reasons alone, Demolishing the Stronghold deserves a place at the top of your reading list, especially in today’s world.

I received a complimentary copy of this book through Celebrate Lit and was not required to post a favorable review. All opinions are my own.

About the Author

z3EQia1Ew

John Gilbert Wozniak (JW Gilbert) grew up in an Oregon farm town. He retired in 2016 as an international data center cooling expert. Around the turn of the century, he began writing as a hobby. After years of expert guidance and a lot of editing, his ArcPoint trilogy is complete. His intent is to write books that are enjoyed by all ages—biblically accurate—with a touch of adventure, romance, and humor. JW has been married to his best friend Darlene since 1980. They are both retired and enjoy the hobby of creating lapidary jewelry. He is a member of Oregon Christian Writers, Mensa, ALLi, and the Tualatin Valley Gem Club.

More from JW

I became an avid fan of Christian fiction, especially after reading This Present Darkness by Frank Peretti. Working 12-hour night shifts as a data center technician, I had ample time on my hands. At one point I was devouring a book per night, but my favorite genre—action/adventure—was almost non-existent in Christian fiction. So, as is the case with many would-be authors, I decided to write the book I wanted to read. The setting? The future when Jesus is ruling the world, as told in Revelation chapter 20. My protagonist? Arcon, an adventurous young man from an isolated tribe of people. The premise? The people of ArcPoint don’t know that the outside world is safe and that Jesus has returned.

My first attempt at writing went well. I wrote my first draft in three weeks, edited it for six months, and landed a hybrid publisher with the final manuscript. The book garnered four- and five-star reviews, so I was pleased. (Not bad for someone who’d flunked English three times.) I was glad the reviews showed that the writing was good, but my readers were missing the message. I pulled it off the market.

For the past few years I’ve been honing my skills as a writer and reworking my ArcPoint story. There have been a few challenges. While researching, I found over a thousand verses in the Bible that sparked ideas for the time period I was writing about. Now the original book has become a trilogy, plus a prequel. However, traditional Christian publishers were not in the market for adventure stories, so I had to learn about self-publishing. And then, like a page right out of my prequel, the unexpected happened—a pandemic. I decided it would be best to put off publicizing until the entire trilogy was available. Now it is.

To see if the first book was ready to be self-published, I sent copies of Mojave Rift to Reader’s Favorite for professional reviews. It got five stars across the board. Then I entered Mojave Rift in their contest and won a silver medal. All the reviewers seemed to appreciate my inclusion of action, romance, and humor in a squeaky clean, fast-paced, futuristic novel.

I hope my ArcPoint series receives high scores from English teachers, but since I still don’t know a passive voice from a hole in the plot, we’ll see. Writing likable characters and adventure stories that run deep and inspire is something I enjoy. I’ve worked hard and it’s a thrill to get high audience scores.

BTW, did I mention the world-building for the isolated tribe in my story is set in America? Now that was a challenge.

Author Interview

Which author has most influenced your own writing?

For motivation, it would be Taylor Caldwell. She researched the life of the Apostle Luke for decades, then wrote Dear and Glorious Physician about his life. For style, I like Frank Peretti’s books and try to emulate them.

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

Any chance I get. For me, writing is a hobby rather than a career. I find it more enjoyable not having to worry about an income.

Which one of your characters speaks most to your heart? Why?

Jarden. Whether as a father figure to Arcon, or the most important person in Arcpoint, he is a wise, humble, godly man.

Who was/is your biggest inspiration?

The late singer/songwriter, Keith Green. I got to see him sing numerous times, even spent a day with him once. His songs discipled me more than any pastor ever did. In the middle of one of his concerts, he had a word of knowledge that God was going to heal warts on someone’s left hand. That was for me, and God did. As a new believer, that had a profound impact on my life. To this day, his songs move me to worship God.

Do you have a favorite Bible verse, or is there a particular Bible story that really resonates with you?

It’s a little different than most: If anyone supposes that he knows anything, he has not yet known as he ought to know; but if anyone loves God, he is known by Him. 1 Cor. 8:2-3 NASB. I was an atheist and thought I knew it all. When I realized God was real, I understood I was wrong about everything. I have since approached life in search of the truth (and a little more humbly).

About the Author

zIZGCFxLA

Award-winning author Caryl McAdoo prays her story brings God glory, and her best-selling tales—coming up on seventy titles now published—delight readers all around the world. The prolific writer also enjoys singing the new songs the Lord gives her; you may listen to those at her YouTube channel.

She loves working in the yard at The Peaceable, her home tucked away on twenty acres, mowing and planting flowers. She lives there with Ron, her high school sweetheart and husband of fifty-five years, five dogs, two dairy goats she milks daily, a flock of chickens, and a plethora of barn cats.

The couple shares four children and twenty-seven grandsugars, six are greats. Caryl and Ron love their quiet, country life in the woods south of Clarksville, seat of Red River County in far Northeast Texas and wait expectantly for God to open the next door so they may do His will.

More from Caryl

I started writing “episodes” for Kindle Vella the first month they opened the new format with WAGONS WEST, season one in the New Beginnings Family Saga Season One. For those who don’t read at Kindle Vella, after the ”season” has been up thirty days, the author can create a book!

The episodes become chapters and WAGONS WEST debuted last November 2022! The SETTLERS & TOFFS story is “Season Two” and I’m tickled pink with it! Book One in the series was an epic wagon train story that ended when they got to the gold fields around Auburn California.

In Book Two, the characters spread out across the globe, and we follow them all. Some of those who arrived in covered wagons began to build the pioneer town of Auburn, making a new home for themselves. Some panning for gold and others building hotels and businesses the miners need.

Some travel to merry old England where one of the wagon train sojourners has been called home after his older brother’s death to be the future Earl of Farnsworth. Having fallen in love, he couldn’t bear to leave Clara behind, so arranges for her family to accompany him. So many of the main characters sail away cross the seas.

The third storyline in SETTLERS & TOFFS becomes another wagon train when the scout in book one decides with his wife to go and bring another group of settlers to the new land—a very lucrative business venture for the captains who knew the way.

There are plenty of characters who come in and out as the story progresses. I’ve come to love the primary ones. There are struggles at every turn. Trials and tribulations fill many of their days, but there are those joyous ones as well!

Through it all, the Lord—still on the throne and in control in 1850—helps His children overcome and blesses them beyond measure . . . just as He does today. He is the Rewarder of those who diligently seek him and obey His commandments—then and now.

My author’s motto is “Praying my story gives God glory!” I also pray that its readers will be drawn into a closer walk with the Almighty as they walk alongside these awesome, stalwart folks who settled the West! They had it rough, but God . . . PRAISE HIM!

They sure do! And so do I!
BLESSINGS!

Author Interview

I’d like to thank Sarah for inviting me today to visit! I love visiting and enjoy giving readers a little insight to my writing.

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

There’s no ‘when I’m writing’ because I’m always writing…for the last ten or twelve years anyway. I write daily and pretty much co-author everything with my husband. We wake and rise between three and four most mornings, pray an hour or so together, then spend another hour or so drinking coffee and watching the news while he checks what the books did the day before and I catch up with emails and messages. Then we write.

All of our manuscripts are on his computer. Mine is more for everything else, formatting, editing, uploading, promoting, writing out blog interviews 😊 and the like. He usually writes first. and I come behind him going over his words. Making changes and adding my take, then he does the same.

We average about a thousand words every day which is on average 4 pages. Sometimes we may gust upwards of 3000 words but as oft, we write six to seven hundred. A thousand words a day is 365,000 in a year. At least one of our books will be around eighty thousand words (320 pages). A couple or three will be 50,000 words each (200 pages) leaving over 120,000 for an epic title of 600 pages!

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Ron and I say we write for discovery. We talk about our main characters when we start a new story and get a good feel for their backstory then open with a crisis that leads to a decision or a decision that leads to a crisis and write on from the start to the finish. When we start a story, we don’t know how it will end of all the things that will happen to our hero and heroine. We never outline or plot anything out.

I can’t say I’m a pantster tough. You see, I never wear pants! I enjoy being a female and all things feminine that goes with that. Skirts and dresses, lockets and lace, having doors opened, and holding my beloved’s hand. 😊

Is there a particular literary period that you’re drawn to (Regency, Victorian, Romantic, Modernism, etc.)? Why?

My favorite time and ear is the Old American West, mid-1800s forward to the 20th century. It was a time for the rough and tough, stalwart pioneers who were brave, worked hard, and loved the land. I love hat the women dressed modestly and the young women were considered treasures and chaperoned when with a suitor. It was so much more a moral time. Historicals are my favorite because they never go ‘out of date’!

Describe your book in five words.

A story to give God glory. My author’s motto is “Prying my story gives God glory!” So those five words would work for all of my sixty-six published titles. 😊

What are your hobbies?

I love to garden, flowers and decorations outside, not vegetables. Although I should be planting veggies, too! I had nine tomato plants this year. Love those fresh home-grown tomatoes! I also love to sing new songs the Lord gives me, and I love to paint stuff on the buildings at The Peaceable Farm & Bookery, our home on twenty acres in the woods– like the Coop deVille and the Peeper Palace and the Barn Babies’ Bungalow!

More from Marguerite

I have desired to revisit my beloved characters and charming Charles Town. The Lestarjette family and their potential adventures sprout to life in my imagination if not on paper. Marriages, jobs, children, new nation?

In Promise Me Christmas I get a glimpse into the colorful lives of familiar heroes and heroines, villains and enemies, major and minor roles as after war scenarios surface. As minor, supporting characters make their presence known, I realize in life there are no minor roles. Each human being has a purpose and a God-given mission.

Think about all the people who stand in the peripheries of your life. They are as important in the scheme of life as your close family and friends. In this novella, I hope to emphasize God’s promises and hopes through people who are flawed, hurting, healing, and making efforts to exist and prosper in a town devastated by war, death, and poverty.

We might not have gone through a war, siege, and occupation by enemy forces, but we can grasp the hopes and promises of Christmas through the lenses of sickness, death, broken relationships, financial woes, and natural disasters.

I hope you enjoy this Christmas novella from my heart of hope and promises to yours.

Author Interview

When/how did you decide to become a writer?

I started writing in fifth grade through journaling which led to making up stories. I still have the notebooks that I started while living in England. My serious attempts started when my children were teenagers, and I started teaching part time. With “free” time, I wrote six novels in two years. These were nowhere near ready for publication. I firmly believe you can be a writer without being published. A writer cannot help but write.

Which author has most influenced your own writing?

I began my Christian Fiction writing and reading journey with Lori Wick. A good friend shared Wick’s books with me and I never turned back. Immediately following were Francine River’s novels. I began to study history through fiction where the authors gave historical figures and events flesh, words, life.

Describe your book in five words.

Entertaining. Educational. Historical. Encouraging. Inspirational.

Do you prefer traditional books, ebooks, or audiobooks?

I started my reading journey by reading one book at a time. I prefer holding and reading a print copy of a book. BUT reading has changed with ebooks and audiobooks. Now, I always have two print books I’m reading, plus an ebook and an audiobook. For the first time ever, I did not take a print book on our two-week vacation. Unbelievable, but still enjoyable.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Write. Keep a notebook of ideas and inspiration. Start now. Writers write. That might not be your bread and butter, but you should feel pleased with your craft as you put words on paper. Listen and study what the authors are doing that you follow. Always learn something new. Things change so quickly. Enjoy the journey.
