Palestinians aren't going anywhere. Neither are Jews. We need to figure out how to live with one another.

Demands for “right of return” and to "free Palestine from the river to the sea" will not help this. Neither will West Bank settlements or rapacious cross-border raids.

We need a two state resolution.

What now?

1. A dhimmi is a second-class, "protected" person under Islamic law. Dhimmis paid additional taxes, could not take part in most professions, could not ride horses or carry weapons, and were subject to the whims of the Sultan, Emir, or Mufti of the area. Throughout the Muslim world, Jewish dhimmis were frequently attacked by mobs of civilians with no protection from local authorities.

2. In 1939, Palestinian leaders rejected the offer of a single, Arab-majority state with a Jewish minority capped at 1/3 of the population (and severely constrained Jewish immigration) because the terms of the deal would have required them to treat Jews as legal equals, not dhimmis.

3. In 1948, the entire region from Morocco to Afghanistan expelled all of their Jewish citizens - approximately 900,000 people in all. Most fled to Israel and were absorbed permanently into its population.

This context matters.
