Making room for wildlife through virtual fencing | NFWF
Farmers and ranchers are often romanticized as living tranquil lives close to the land, guided by familiar rhythms and generations of tradition. The reality is far more demanding. Days are long. The work is physical. Vacations are exceedingly rare. And historically, one of the most grueling, time-consuming tasks has been managing the miles of fencing required to keep livestock where they need to be.

Restoring forests to give Appalachia’s former mine lands a second life | NFWF
On a breezy morning in the Cumberland River basin, a bright tape loops across the ground while two field techs tally saplings. Counting sounds like roll call: “Oak! Pine! Cherry!” Each young tree earns a shout and a tally marking a forest that wasn’t here last year. On land that once fueled local economies through coal mining, those tallies now mark the beginning of a new chapter for both people and wildlife.Once mined for coal hiding underneath the hills, these lands now have a new role to play as healthy forests that protect water, wildlife and nearby towns.

Bringing blackbanded sunfish back to blackwater habitat in Maryland | U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service
On a picture-perfect, mid-September Monday, a dozen staff from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service caravaned down a rutted dirt road in a Wildlife Management Area to witness a conservation milestone. Upon exiting their vehicles, attendees gathered around a few five-gallon tanks at the edge of a small pond. The tanks contained tiny fish — about the size of a quarter — whose yellow-green bodies with dark vertical stripes glowed in the early fall light.

Monarch Butterfly and Pollinators Conservation Fund | NFWF
The Monarch Butterfly and Pollinators Conservation Fund supports work that advances the conservation of the monarch butterfly and other at-risk native insect pollinators. Originally named the Monarch Butterfly Conservation Fund, the fund added the term ‘Pollinators’ to its title in 2018 to reflect an increased focus on a broader set of priority species.

Sustain Our Great Lakes Program | NFWF
Sustain Our Great Lakes is a public–private partnership designed to sustain, restore and protect fish, wildlife and habitat in the basin by leveraging funding, building conservation capacity, and focusing partners and resources toward key ecological issues. The program achieves this mission, in part, by awarding grants for on-the-ground habitat restoration and enhancement.

Restoring eastern hellbenders to southwest Virginia streams | NFWF
Although eastern hellbenders are the largest salamander in the United States, they can be hard to spot. These amphibians spend most of their time under flat rocks and boulders in streambeds, watching for crayfish, tadpoles, toads and water snakes. The water moves fast, but the hellbenders don’t travel far. One hellbender can sometimes be found under the same rock, year after year.
Fire by Design: How the Southeast is relearning to live with flames | NFWF
Fire by Design: How the Southeast is relearning to live with flames | NFWF
On a June morning in North Carolina’s Green Swamp, sunlight filters through longleaf crowns and onto a prairie of wiregrass, pitcher plants and tiny Venus flytraps. A year earlier, this same landscape made headlines when the 2023 Pulp Road Wildfire scorched nearly 16,000 acres. Today, however, the savanna hums with life. It’s a living example of a paradox the Southeast knows well: when fire is used intentionally, through a practice often referred to as controlled burning, forests and nearby communities are better prepared when wildfire arrives.

Giving alligator gar a lifeline in the Lower Mississippi River | NFWF
At dawn, the woods are hushed and damp. River water meanders between towering trees, and a long shadow glides just beneath the surface. A flash of silver breaches the surface before sliding back into the murky water. To most, it’s a familiar scene along the winding path of the Mississippi River in Louisiana. But to the biologist watching, it’s a sign of progress: a fish returning to a place it once couldn’t reach.

A conservation milestone: 62,000 acres of South Carolina forestland protected through Walmart’s Acres for America | NFWF
In a landmark effort to safeguard South Carolina’s natural heritage, more than 62,000 acres of forestland — an area three times the size of Hilton Head Island — will be permanently conserved under the Pee Dee Basin Initiative, the largest conservation easement in South Carolina state history. This extraordinary, $70-million conservation effort will preserve timberlands, protect wildlife habitat, and expand public access to nature across Marion, Williamsburg and Georgetown counties.

Restoring headwater forests for people and wildlife | NFWF
Urgent conservation work can be challenging, no matter where it is needed. You’ve got to find funding, the right partners and projects, and the right balance of benefits to wildlife and people. This is certainly the case in California, a state rich in wildlife and people, forests and farms, highways and rivers, vast wilderness and enormous metropolitan areas. The stakes are high, especially considering that much of the state’s forested landscapes are naturally prone to wildfire, moreso in the modern world.
