Children's Community Nursing (SICC)

Community Children’s Nurses (CCNs)
Clinical Care
Provide nursing at home – wound care, injections, IV antibiotics, central line, tracheostomy care, and management of nasogastric/gastrostomy feeding. Monitor long-term conditions and support safe hospital discharges.
Family Support
Offer practical and emotional help. Teach parents/carers safe medication, feeding, and equipment use. Act as a key contact post-discharge.
School & Community
Work with schools, nurseries, and services to meet health needs. Provide staff training such as care plans and feeding.
Multi-Disciplinary
Work with GPs, consultants, therapists, social care, and palliative teams. Contribute to safeguarding and child protection.
Admissions & Palliative Care
Prevent avoidable admissions, enable earlier discharges, and support safe care at home. Deliver palliative and end-of-life care including symptom control and bereavement support.

Paediatric Virtual Ward

The Paediatric Virtual Ward provides care to children at home using remote monitoring (DOCOBO), home visits, telephone reviews and video conferencing. It helps keep children and young people safe and comfortable while reducing hospital visits. Our team has a variety of pathways including; asthma, viral induced wheeze, nephrotic syndrome, bronchiolitis, gastroenteritis, fluid reviews, jaundice including phototherapy treatment at home, measles, hospital avoidance,  respiratory infections and IV antibiotics for Sundays and bank holidays.

Diabetes team

We are a team of specialist children’s diabetes nurses who support young people and families living with diabetes. Our role is to help children manage their condition confidently at home, in school, and in hospital. We work closely with doctors, dietitians, and psychologists, offering education, clinical care, and emotional support.

Students joining us will see how we combine practical skills—such as insulin management, pump and sensor technology, and blood glucose monitoring with teaching and advocacy. You’ll be involved in clinics, ward visits, and school liaison, gaining insight into both the clinical and compassionate aspects of diabetes care.

Our philosophy is simple: every child is more than their diabetes. We empower young people to live full and healthy lives while supporting families along the way.

Our aim is to promote healthy bladder and bowels for children aged four to 19, who live or go to school in the Sandwell area. We aim to increase children’s independence with toilet skills within their personal capability. The service can also provide teaching/information sessions on:

Delayed toileting
Constipation and soiling
Day and nighttime wetting
Continence products 
•	For children and young people (C&YP) aged from 4-19 years including children with learning and physical disability. 
•	For Children and young people experiencing symptoms of: 
•	urinary urgency 
•	frequency 
•	nocturnal enuresis 
•	daytime wetting and soiling 
•	urinary or faecal incontinence  
•	constipation  
Who have not responded to level 1 universal service provided by health visitors or school health nurse. 
 
•	For C&YP who require an ultrasound scan of the bladder to enhance individual assessment

Haemoglobinopathy

I am the Paediatric Haemoglobinopathy Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS). I support children and young people with blood conditions such as sickle cell disease and thalassaemia. My role is to help coordinate care, making sure the right tests, treatments, and follow ups are in place. I teach families, schools, and carers about these conditions and how to manage them day to day. I also provide emotional support and collaborate with doctors, teachers, and other health professionals. As children grow, I encourage them to become more independent in managing their condition, so they feel confident moving into adult services. My aim is to ensure every child and family feels safe, supported, and empowered.

The Roald Dahl Marvellous Children’s Charity provide specialist nurses and support for seriously ill children by working in partnership with the NHS. There are currently over 80 Roald Dahl Specialist Nurses caring for over 24,000 children across the UK.

Our clinical nurse specialists offer support, information and advice to families and liaise with other professionals. As clinical experts they can answer questions about your child’s condition, work closely with the consultants and local services, monitor and adjust treatments.

I am a Paediatric Asthma Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS), working to support children and young people living with asthma and their families. My role focuses on providing expert care, education, and guidance to help children manage their condition effectively and safely.

What I Do:
Assess and monitor children with asthma in both clinic and hospital settings.

Support families in understanding asthma, medication use, and inhaler technique.

Work with schools and community teams to promote awareness and safe asthma care.

Act as a link between families, doctors, and other healthcare professionals to ensure joined-up care.

Provide education for staff, students, and parents to help prevent asthma attacks and improve quality of life.
