Decel to Excel: A Technical Framework for Introducing Deceleration in the Clinic | JOSPT Open
SYNOPSIS: Deceleration, which is characterized by frequent and rapid reductions in momentum, often followed by sudden changes of direction, combined with the constraints of time and space, creates an ideal scenario for serious noncontact lower-limb injuries (ie, anterior cruciate ligament tear, tendon ruptures, soft tissue injuries). It is common to initiate deceleration tasks in mid- to late-stage rehabilitation and on the field. The aim of this Viewpoint is to explain deceleration and its importance in sports injury rehabilitation. We argue for introducing deceleration tasks earlier in rehabilitation and provide a framework for training deceleration in clinical settings for return to sport. JOSPT Open 2025;3(3):210-213. Epub 17 March 2025. doi:10.2519/josptopen.2025.0107
Re-Thinking Upper Extremity Return to Sport (RTS) Metrics: Unique Considerations for the Contact Athlete
Re-Thinking Upper Extremity Return to Sport (RTS) Metrics: Unique Considerations for the Contact Athlete
Limb Symmetry Index, or LSI, is an important aspect of return to sport testing in athletes recovering from injury or surgery. The 90% LSI target is often utilized as a definitive benchmark to signify “within normal limits” strength in these cases allowing for return to participation in sport.
On a Scale from 0-10, Do Pain Scores Matter?
On a Scale from 0-10, Do Pain Scores Matter?
Assessing pain is common practice within the constructs of physical therapy. We use pain score to help with a variety of elements including understanding the nature of symptoms, how to adjust individualized plan of cares, and data for insurance companies to justify services.
Femoroacetabular Impingement Syndrome and Its Impact on Mental Health: A Physiotherapist’s Perspective
Femoroacetabular Impingement Syndrome and Its Impact on Mental Health: A Physiotherapist’s Perspective
Femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) accounts for up to 49% of young and middle-aged people with hip and groin related pain.7 Diagnosis is confirmed where a triad of symptoms, clinical examination and image findings are present.2 Excessive bone formation at the acetabulum (pincer) and the femoral head-neck junction (cam) can lead to altered hip biomechanics during movement, leading to cartilage damage within the joint.2

Introducing JOSPT Methods
Introducing JOSPT Methods
SYNOPSIS: In 2025, JOSPT will continue its mission to enhance research in the field of musculoskeletal rehabilitation. JOSPT aims to support authors who are working to advance the research methods applied to answer clinical questions in the musculoskeletal rehabilitation field. Using the most robust methods helps authors ensure their studies can have immediate impact on health policies and clinical practice. With this editorial, we introduce a new gold open-access journal, JOSPT Methods, where research will be available to read for free, immediately upon publication. J Orthop Sports Phys Ther 2024;54(10):618-620. doi:10.2519/jospt.2024.12972

Navigating the Mind Maze: How Can We Help Patients With Hip-Related Pain? | Editorial
SYNOPSIS: This editorial critically evaluates how hip-related pain is currently managed, highlighting the limitations of traditional biomedical interventions alone in restoring optimal function and well-being. Psychological factors are key determinants of outcomes after surgical and nonsurgical treatment. We highlight the need for a holistic, patient-centered approach in evaluating and treating hip-related pain. Shifting to a holistic, patient-centered approach can improve treatment outcomes and reduce patient suffering. We guide readers to the impact of psychological factors on treatment outcomes, provide clinical considerations for how clinicians might approach psychologically informed practice, and outline future research directions.
