Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Why do I feel like the nightmare scenario of the US trading ALL the prisoners in Guantanamo Bay in exchange for the remaining Americans in Afghanistan is closer to reality than people think?... I'm going to start saying "snazzy" much more often. Maybe to an annoying degree. Just like the word. Tom Brady is snazzy... Think I know this one... Remember - Harambe died for our sins... Cynic in me wonders how Hunter Biden will profit off Joe Biden's new COVID guidelines. You know he has some angle working... Going to describe random things as being like a "quantum mechanical smearing of space time itself" just so people won't know what the hell I'm talking about or mean. "Oregon beating Ohio State is like a quantum mechanical smearing of space time itself!" See what I'm talking about...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Would be the ultimate troll move if President Trump nominated Elizabeth Warren to be the head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs before he left office. Would absolutely love and support the move... Empathy Tent would be a good name for an Enya cover band... Funny how you don't hear about closing Guantanamo Bay as a political issue any more isn't it?... Louis CK's Erotic Handshake would be a good name for a band (or his next comedy special)... Before he leaves office it would also be great if President Trump nominated the Iron Sheik to be the Ambassador to Iran. That would break the Internet... Especially at this time of year I don't think we say "Hark!" enough. Wouldn't you like to hear someone calling attention to something by shouting "Hark! Hark!" Or maybe it's just me...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Do you think you'll see any Goodell Clown Nose T-shirts on TV Sunday night? You know some Patriots fans will be wearing them in the stands. Would make a good Super Bowl prop bet. I'd put the over/under at 1.5.. The power of compounding and the destructive power of taxes all in one image... Spicy Merkin Relics would be a good name for a Violent Femmes cover band... These "kids" grew up knowing Tom Brady was the GOAT...  According to Hammurabi's Code the fetus of a "superior" woman was worth 10 shekels of silver. Don't think it mattered whether the fetus was 20 weeks old or not... Heh heh... Stephen King was innocently out walking one day when he was hit by a car on the back roads of Maine. The "accident" almost killed or crippled him for life and he spent months in the hospital to recover. In his mind I would what sort of evil deeds he's done to deserve such karma?...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

I'm pissed off about the new Tax Bill. Pissed off that no Senator or Congressman took the opportunity to slip in language to end Daylight Savings when they had the opportunity. Pissed off!... Heh heh... FACT - none of the six QB's selected to the Pro Bowl defeated Blake Bortles this season. Also FACT - Donald Trump has not been defeated in the Octogon by any other President living or dead... I don't expect Meryl Streep to answer this question. But it's a very valid question especially given her relationship with Harvey Weinstein... Funny how you don't hear about closing Guantanamo Bay as a campaign issue any more isn't it?... Good argument for Mickey Loomis as NFL Executive of the Year. Although Les Snead hired Sean McVay as head coach of the Rams so there's that... Jeff Fisher is said to be "eyeing" several NFL coaching jobs. On a related note - I'm "eyeing" several Victoria Secrets models. The mutual interest in both cases should be similar...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

The NFLPA wants top draft picks to boycott the NFL draft in New York City but did they invite them to Marco Island for their recent meeting? My guess is no. They are asking these kids to give up one of the biggest nights in their lives and then will stick them with a rookie pay scale but the NFLPA is not interested in hearing their opinions... "The 12 States of America." Interesting interactive look at income demographics. Kind of tough to tell difference between Mormon Outposts and Military Bastions... There are rumors that John Kerry may be chosen to replace Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State if she steps down. Remember that Kerry called some of our closest allies the "coalition of the coerced and the bribed"? He's a dunce who would do nothing but harm the US in the eyes of the world... Players chip in to save coach’s life after Clippers decline medical coverage... I wonder if the official NFL store would let me make a Vikings number 28 jersey with the name "SLAVE" on the back?... Guantanamo Bay gets 2 and a half stars... The phrase "Get Bent" is supposedly short for "You should get bent over so someone can sodomize you on Christmas". I find the longer version much funnier than the abbreviated one... Chevy Chase's real first name is Cornelius. Who knew?...

Haiti and Cuba

A strange thought struck me this morning - what if the earthquake that hit Haiti had hit Cuba instead? Would we have been as concerned? Would we have blamed the death and devastation on Cuba's failed mode of government? Would we have kept our pocketbooks closed? Would our government even allow aid to a country with whom we have banned any sort of trade? Would Guantanamo Bay have become the hub for all relief efforts?

I think the last sentence is true. Our military is leading the relief efforts in Haiti and I think the same would have been true for Cuba too.

Captain Mark Leary

Instapundit had a link to an SI.com piece by the lead singer of the band Five for Fighting. singer John Ondrasik went down to Guantanamo Bay to play for the troops and to talk hockey for Sports Illustrated. In the SI piece Ondrasik mentions that perhaps the biggest hockey fan down there is the base commander - Captain Mark O'Leary.

I thought that name rang a bell - so I did some digging and yes - the reason I know that name is because Captain O'Leary is a Worcester native. He went to college at Clark and later got a Masters in Public Administration from UMass, Amherst. Given that he has a decent slapshot - I'm willing to bet he played some outdoor hockey on the pond in Crystal Park near Clark (or maybe at Elm Park).

It is interesting to note that since the US has no ambassador or diplomatic mission in Cuba that Captain O'Leary's regular informal meetings with his military counterpart at the fence line represents the highest current level of political interaction between the US and Cuba and given the health of Fidel Castro this is saying a lot.

Not bad for a Worcester kid.
