Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

During his speech at the 1964 Democratic National Convention - LBJ never once mentioned Vietnam. Guessing the MSM of the day never pressed him on it either. The more things change the more they stay the same... Rudolph Diesel is a man who doesn't get enough credit for his contributions to the modern world... Funny how this works out but L. Ron Hubbard was able to create a cult while Charlie Sheen failed in his attempt. From the outside you'd think that "Tiger Blood" and "Winning!" would be more attractive than space aliens but go figure... Did McDonald's skip the Shamrock shake this year? Never saw any ads for it... Heh heh - "Oral Roberts has more wins over Ohio State than Jim Harbaugh." - Ross Tucker...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Would love to see Charlie Sheen take over the Ellen Show. That would be a train wreck worth tuning into... "We must love them both, those whose opinions we share and those whose opinions we reject." - Thomas Aquinas... Simple solution - the Democrats simply list their nominee for President on all ballots as just J. Biden and if elected Jill Biden (technically J. Biden) takes over the White House and Joe is put into a "home"... Bill DeBlasio threatens to lay off 22,000 city workers if Feds don't give NYC bailout money. Not to be outdone - Andrew Cuomo threatens to house the laid off workers in nursing homes if Feds don't give state bailout money... "Can someone explain to me the technical difference between anarchists and the mentally ill? Is it a branding thing?" - Scott Adams with a couple of excellent questions...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

The 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris featured a live pigeon-shooting event. It never appeared in the Games again. If the Olympics ever come to NYC maybe they could bring that back... Just a reminder but 9-years ago yesterday the Rapture was supposed to have happened. It didn't... HBO should reboot the show Entourage but just make it a pseudo documentary (The Office style) about Charlie Sheen's every day life... The "current net migration rate for Iraq in 2020 is 0.308 per 1000 population." That means more people are moving to Iraq than leaving it. That's something the States of California and New York can't claim. Think about that for a minute... Just a reminder but 10-years ago Vice President Joe Biden promised a growing economy with 250,000 to 500,000 new jobs each month. That never happened (well at least not under President Obama). Maybe those jobs were Raptured?...  The 1982 Grammy nominees for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance were Wendy O Williams (of the Plasmatics), Lita Ford and Pia Zadora. I would love to watch a documentary about how that came about and the lasting damage done by it to women in Rock... Of all the Thompson gunners, Roland was the best...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Nick Charles, the original anchor of CNN's Sports Tonight, has passed away. Back in the day Sports Tonight and ESPN's SportsCenter were neck and neck. Nick Charles and Fred Hickman were much better than whatever anchors ESPN put out there. What killed Sports Tonight in the end was SportsCenter going to an hour-long format. CNN just couldn't or wouldn't compete with that. I always liked Nick Charles because I think he took his name from The Thin Man... I admit it - I'm a complete sucker for the movie You've Got Mail. Really can't explain it... Very cool. 1964 letter from Campbell Soup Product Manager to Andy Warhol... "Are you afraid the DJ will play some Blue Grass?" I don't know what it means but I kept hearing that phrase in my sleep last night... Do you think the release of the movie Zookeeper was timed to line up with annual Furry Convention? I think so... Another painting I'd like to own... Charlie Sheen was caught with briefcase of cocaine and nothing happens but if an inner city kid is caught with a single rock of crack he goes to jail. That in a nutshell is the problem with our drug laws in this country... Cthulhu doesn't play dice with the universe. (Is that how the quote goes?)... OK the FBI got Whitey Bulger but remember - the Hamburgler is still at large! Robble robble!... Pat Tillman Foundation names a new president... Sad to hear about the passing of an American original - Peter Falk. I don't think you've ever heard anyone say anything about gentleman and funny guy Peter Falk.

Linky Links

Stuff I thought was interesting and thought I'd share.

- Very cool stop motion photography

- Michael J Fox News (I felt like a bad person for laughing at that - the only redeeming thing is the information at the bottom of the screen.)

- Voted best illusion of the year

- Reasons Why the Crackdown on Internet Poker Is a Mistake

- Is HBO's Entourage wooing Charlie Sheen to join the cast for their final season? I admit - that could get me watching the show again.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

The Michael Smith podcast may be the best one Bill Simmons has ever done. MUST listening for Celtics or NBA fans. Great insight into the league and the tail-end of the original Big 3 era in Boston... Sam Simon makes a good point - as out of control as Charlie Sheen has been as an actor he still will never top the antics of John Wilkes Booth... I wonder if Tim McCarver's two-year extension is just a holding pattern for FOX waiting for Derek Jeter to retire?... Phil Collins retired because Cincinnati would not trade his concert dates to a more competitive city... Heh heh - speaking of Bill Simmons... Never noticed this before but Ray McKinnon who was Reverend Smith in Deadwood also plays Coach Cotton in The Blind Side... According Yahoo! Sports Jim Tressel knew of Pryor's memorabilia sale in April 2010, which would be a possible major NCAA violation. As an aside - I can't help but wonder just for perspective what were the costs of the Federal, Ohio St and NCAA investigations vs the total amount of the $7,500 players received for selling some of the things they owned. The NCAA makes these bizarre scenarios possible through their rules. How strange will it be if a Championship winning coach is fired because of a tattoo artist?... I get sick of people who mention that David Duke ran for office as a Republican. How come they never mention that Fred Phelps (the Westboro Baptist Church uber douchebag) ran for office as a Democrat?... The TV ads for Bob Seger's Boston appearance show clips of him from the 80's and 90's ignoring fact that he now looks like a modern Burl Ives... Call me immature but every time I see "Jeter in the 2-hole" I have to laugh...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Ted Gundy is now my favorite sniper. Seriously cool. Good for him... Someone should redo the Rolling Stones classic Sympathy for the Devil with new lyrics making it Sympathy for Charlie... I may have missed it but have the Wisconsin union protesters or the missing State Senators offered any solutions of their own to the Wisconsin debt problem? Or are they just for the status quo? Unbelievable... RIP, Henry Africa, creator of the 1st fern bar. Very cool story. He also had a bar named after Eddie Rickenbacker - very cool indeed... Another good song remake for Charlie Sheen would be Robert Palmer's Addicted to Love which easily could be changed Addicted to Charlie. Bonus is you could have the "goddesses" in the background just like the original music video... The Joe Posnanski story on the dying Nick Charles is must reading. Very sad but it seems like Nick Charles has led a very full life... Charlie was the beloved unicorn who went to candy mountain and got his kidney stolen. That's not winning... The Minty Goodness of the Shamrock Shake is back! Yay green poop!... Does Charlie surf? I was told he does not... Jimmy Fallon's Charlie Sheen is truly great. Funny but I can't remember Fallon doing any impressions on SNL but his Neil Young and now Charlie Sheen impressions have been spot on...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

If I ran Single A or below baseball team I'd invite Charlie Sheen to play in a Press Release. I'd ask him to bring his winning. Seriously I'd invite Charlie Sheen to play any position he wants. The number of outlets reporting on it alone would make it a "winning" proposition. Free advertising for the team and an outside shot he's crazy enough to take up the offer... Victor Davis Hanson on Donald Rumsfeld - double win... How screwed up would it be if Zack Greinke became of charter member of Charlie Sheen's cult?... Charlie Sheen quotes as New Yorker cartoons... Now when I see the question "Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?" I really expect the answer to be Charlie Sheen... Very cool! New Jersey Congressman Beats IBM’s Watson... If I was at all musical I would start a Bruce Springsteen cover band with an Elvis impersonator as the frontman singing the Springsteen songs in an Elvis voice. I'd call it Boss Elvis. I think that would be awesome... God forgive me but I laughed my ass off at this... Some sites have this "Space Ball" banner ad - the noise on those ads is the most annoying thing in the history of the Internet. I wish I knew what product those ads are for just so I could avoid buying that product for the rest of my life... Very cool! Band of Brothers cast to jump out of planes in aid of Normandy memorial. I just knew that Dale Dye would be one of the parachuters... I agree with this legislation 100% - NH Bill Would Make Some T&A Screening Sexual Assault...

Two and a Half Men Guest Stars

I think they should keep making Two and a Half Men episodes but with a different person playing Charlie Sheen's role each week. First week I'd have Ellen DeGeneres. How funny would that be?

Next episode I'd do a complete 180 and have Ernest Bognine. See the potential for this idea? Just have the guest star where a Charlie Sheen wig and a bowling shirt and let them roll. You could even go American idol on this and have people vote on who the next person to play Charlie would be. This could completely reboot the series and make life without Charlie Sheen so easy to take. Plus the production costs would decrease (which means additional profits for the show's owners).

So let it be written - so let it be done!

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

What happens when a Black Bear runs into a cow? (Amazing pictures)... I'm looking forward to the Charlie Sheen anti-drug public service announcements. You know they are only a few weeks away from being made... The Men's and Women's winners at the Australian Open each get $2.2 million mean while Erik Seidel just got $2.5 mil for one day's work playing poker at the $250,000 buy in at the Aussie Millions... Mike Lombardi has a good look at why Jeff Fisher's time had come in Tennessee. I especially agree with this quote: "[Vince] Young's lack of leadership, work ethic and commitment to the team is why he is not coming back, not Fisher"... Tweet of the Day - @pourmecoffee: Mubarak on Internet connectivity: Probably your router; try turning it off and back on again... Wade Boggs for his career hit .369 at Fenway and just .307 on road yet people always point out Jim Rice's Fenway splits. Oh and overall Boggs had just a .781 OPS and just a 82 OPS+ for his career on the road. Don't get me going on Wade Boggs... 10 strange beer names and their stories... So turns out Bernie Madoff is going to be to the Wilpons and the Mets what Michael Jackson was to the Sullivans and the Patriots... Never noticed it before but Captain Crunch has crazy eyes. Just left Charlie Sheen's house kind of crazy eyes... I'm guessing Cromartie didn't put aside any game checks like NFLPA suggested. No wonder he's so uptight... Maybe it's the name "Wade" - Wade Boggs, Ed Wade, Wade Phillips - not a guy in the bunch I like...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Today will be a day of watching Band of Brothers on Spike and college football on ESPN. What a country!... The Battle of Trenton: An Eyewitness Account. I love stuff like this... The Oakland A's hit just 135 HR last YR with 25 of them coming from Jack Cust. With Cust all but gone there is a real chance the A's hit less than 100 HR in 2010. Next up for the A's giving their players Deadball Nicknames like Pud and Chief... Charlie Sheen's real name is Carlos Irwin Estevez - I did not know that... I think the San Francisco Giants could be a darkhorse team to sign Jason Bay - God knows they need a power hitter... Nugget from ESPN's Adam Schefter, "Chris Johnson will enter Titans' finale against Seattle 128 yards short of 2,000 and 233 short of Eric Dickerson's single-season record"... I think Ryan Garko could be an interesting low cost pick-up for a team that needs a 1st or DH... Another good name for a blog would be "Quodlibet" which is derived from the Latin for "whatever pleases"... I posted about the importance of the Battle of Trenton before... Happy 62nd birthday to Carlton "Pudge" Fisk. Wow - 62?
