Ah, yes, some high-brow entertainment! The Taiwanese small orchestra that features violin, cello, piano keys and an acoustic guitar, came back with another brillant release (there's too many for me to count, really) that transforms geography into music and feels as artistic as mysterious.

The band is around for over 15 years now. In this time, the band "has woven Taiwan’s mountains, seas, and landscapes into sound". This time, the geographical inspirations are broader as the artists draw inspiration from the wintery sceneries of Iceland, Greenland or New Zealand. The cold, the ice, the whiteness, it's all enchanted into classical music notes. However, it's not like we are served with droney white noise, quite the opposite, there is a lot going on. Perhaps not something I'd associate with the winter stillness, but maybe the inspirations were rather subtle.

"Through delicate sound and moments gathered on the road, Cicada turns the disappearance of eternal landscapes into intimate encounters between music and listener". And the music in questions is particularly magical.

Takahiro Kido - INSOMNIA (2025)

The artists around the Japanese Ricco Label have inspired me more or less from the beginning of this blog. Anoice, Mizu Amane, Tokyo Ambient Collective they all appeared here and for a good reason: the label is basically a quality stamp for music revolving around neoclassical and ambient soundscapes. And around Takahiro Kido himself.

A member of all of the above and a founder of the label comes back to releasing music under his name, after almost a decade since the last album, "The New World". And it's a great thing he does so. The music on the album is lead by piano keys, but a great deal of the fantastic atmosphere is created by string instruments (violins, violas, and cellos) played by the members of Anoice. There is a certain drama felt in the compositions, the spine-thrilling and unnerving at times passages are far from the relaxing or melancholic atmosphere often associated with neoclassical music. This time, it keeps the heart beating and the mind wondering what'll happen next.

And it's not a surprise since the album was inspired by insomnia, as suggested by its title. It is focused on a simply, yet captivating question: "Where is the boundary between reality and dream" which people suffering from this sleeping disorder may need to ask themselves more often then not. It also leads to the atmosphere, unnerving as I said but also dreamy and airy. Given the artist's background, it won't be a very novel thought that this music is basically a movie score without the movie, but it really describes it so well.

The Infinity Ring - Ataraxia (2025)

"New England’s best kept secret", The Infinity Ring released their sophomore album and I have to say that there is tons to unveil here. This collective atmospheric but also very artsy and very dark rock music is meant to enchant everyone who tastes it. One can only appreciate the range of feelings the album triggers: from the intimate melancholia up to the euphoria of the loud crescendos.

The first thing you notice when listening to the Americans' music is how deep Cameron Moretti's vocal is. It's almost Leonard Cohen-esque so you can imagine the structure of the voice you can practically feel on your skin. The second thing would be how beautifully complex their compositions are. Always starting from the point of calm darkness and sometimes maintaining this atmosphere til the very end, sometimes bursting into loud and noisy, orchestral-like giant made of notes, out of which each is equally important. I, being a post-rock fan, prefer slightly the latter with the absolute masterpiece entitled Elysium in the first place.

And since the loudness and the calmness here are both fueled by violin sounds, you can be sure that the atmosphere on the album is the most important thing. Being an enormous challenge to make, the album itself is a monument to "the exploration, the emotional toll and ultimately the ecstasy of creation" while the band is praised not only for not breaking under the pressure of the process but also for live performances. I hope to be able to experience the latter on my own one day.

Hope the Flowers - Sonorous Faith PT​.​2 (2023)

The first part of this album came out all the way in 2023 and I liked it so much that this year's second part had to appear here as well. Hailing from Thailand, Hope the Flowers is one of my favourite Asian post-rock outfits and the one that shows how to make a really orchestral sound within this music genre.

The new album is said to represent the "beautiful and gentle side" of the project that started as a one-man outfit by Narongrit Ittipolnavakul to evolve into the full-blown orchestral line-up we know at the moment. This multi-threaded music really can become something very powerful, even in this "gentler" form. So, even though it really is softer and more detail-oriented post-rock music, the overall structure of the tracks do remind me of MONO's music with the long developing compositions that can suddenly burst into loud, very emotional fragments. 

However, most of the album is kept in this key-like notes-filled, beautiful, neoclassical soundscape atmosphere that is both extremely attractive and very moody. This all is achieved with guitars that are accompanied by orchestra-like classical instruments, with the heavier sounds of trumpets and the softest ones of glockenspiel and, very occasionally, vocals. Good stuff from South-East Asia.

Hoofless - Ad Nauseam (2022)

Although the Salt Lake City's Hoofless advertise their own music as "chamber punk", there's not much of the chamber subtlety here. The band is really a small orchestra with instruments such as cello and trumpets and what they do can probably be described as neoclassical post-rock. Which I love. Their second ever album Ad Nauseam is so good, one could listen to it over and over again without any side effects (regardless of what the title suggests).

While the orchestral nature of their music obviously adds tons of grandeur, it is composed in such a way as to evoke the emotions of nervousness and anxiety, there's more of the dark and heavy than any other feeling here. And as such, in many parts, the slow but steady pace and the presence of trumpets make me think of Godspeed You! Black Emperor and it's pretty clear that the Canadians were a big influence on the American band. While the neoclassical instruments play vital role throughout the whole album, the vocals only appear later, in Rise, but for a major role, they have to wait til the very end and the most lyrical and, yes, chamber pop-like, And This Too, Again and Again.

There are more calmer moments here as well. The first part of 9 to 7 sounds a lot like a sunny weather after a storm would sound like with a lot of shiny and soft sounds. However, as one could guess, it mainly serves as an introduction to another acoustic storm. Still, the loudness and noise here are introduced skill- and tastefully, only where they matter the most.

Introvert - Dreamless Sleep (2022)

Introvert is a quite a fitting moniker for an instrumental ambient/neoclassical artist. This particular one comes from the West Coast and seems to release quite a bunch of albums every year since 2020. The newest one is called Dreamless Sleep.

The music on the album is based on classical instruments but it's not some minimal, atmosphere-oriented piano/strings-only stuff. The short compositions here have the real orchestral grandeur with the full complexity of various instruments put in one track. The artist describes the album as "a soundtrack to a movie in my head as well as an exploration of the empty space in which we sleep and arise from". It's no surprise then that the album has both massive and calm, happier and darker moments, just like a movie, just like life.

Pertegò - Una (2021)

Pertegò and their emotional music appeared on my blog three years ago with their previous album Black. In the meantime, the Emilia-Romagna-based group celebrated the 10 years anniversary of their debut album and now, to underline this achievement, they showed their fourth album mischievously called Una.

The focus point for their art is nature and its forces, they are "telling stories about still free nature, they are talking about their world made of simple things and the nature that gave them birth" and fittingly, the music on the new album ranges from delicate and airy places to sky-reaching, breath-taking monuments made of sound. Just like the world around us was meant to be. The artists do that with an epic take on melancholic post-rock/prog-rock music with extremely heavy focus on creating the airy and ethereal atmosphere. The inclusion of piano keys gives it the delicate notes, the string sequences add to the whole thing's tear-jerking nostalgia, the oneiric-sounding vocals bring the element of Sacrum and simultaneously makes me think of the soundtrack for Civilization V, my favourite gaming soundtrack ever - with similar orchestral/choral take on the ethereal music. I love it so much as it goes on and delivers more and more nostalgic cinematic vibes and, simply speaking, beauty.

For the band, the album is "the end of the fifteen-year journey, a journey that has described [them] in every moment of [their] life until today" and, at the same time, marks the time of personal changes within the band's line-up. As a result, the album sounds fittingly epic (it's not always that an album means so much for a group of people) and magical.

O liverpoolskim A Burial at Sea miałem okazję postować już w momencie ich debiutu EP-ką ​..​.​And the Sum of Its Parts dwa lata temu. Potem był jeszcze gig na Bergmal Festival zeszłą jesienią, a teraz mogę w końcu powiedzieć, że wyjątkowy post-rock zespołu doczekał się wydania długogrającego na A Burial at Sea.

Niewiele zespołów post-rockowych decyduje się na użycie w swoim line-upie instrumentów dętych, na myśl przychodzą mi jeszcze norwescy szaleńcy z genialnego Spurv. Tymczasem dla Anglików jest to w zasadzie podstawa twórczości, na swoim profilu sami swoją muzykę nazywają "trąbkowym rockiem". To oczywiście uproszczenie, bo jest w niej dużo, dużo więcej, ale fakt jest faktem. W muzyce zespołu dźwięki trąbki dodają jeszcze więcej szaleństwa do już i tak math-rockowo chaotycznego post-rocka, w którym nastroje, tempa i melodie zmieniają się co i rusz.

Natomiast muzycy dają sobie spokojnie radę również, gdy trzeba zakończyć kawałek w bardzo post-rockowy, monumentalny i głośny sposób (Lest We Remember) czy gdy chcą połączyć pełną napięcia gitarową kompozycję z chóralnym wokalem o tęsknocie za domem (Lightning Blanket). A dźwięki trąbki zawsze temu towarzyszom i zawsze dodają kolorytu.

A Burial at Sea - A Burial at Sea (2020) EN

I posted about the Liverpool-based A Burial at Sea when they showed their debut EP ​..​.​And the Sum of Its Parts two years ago. Then there was a gig at the Bergmal Festival last autumn and now I can safely say that the band's unique post-rock has finally an LP form on A Burial at Sea.

There's only a few post-rock bands that use the trumpet's sounds in their music, actually, I can think only of the Norwegian crazy guys of the brilliant Spurv. That being said, for the English band this is essentially the basis of their work, they even call their music "trumpet rock" on their FB account. Of course, this is understatement, there's so much more in it, but a fact is a fact. In the band's music the trumpet sounds add on to the madness of the already math-rock-like chaotic post-rock in which the moods, paces and melodies change every second.

But the artists feel good also when it's the time to finish a song in a very post-rock, monumental and loud way (Lest We Remember) or when they want to combine a very tension-filled guitar composition with some chanting about home sickness (Lightning Blanket). And the sounds of the trumpet are always there and always add to the colourfullness of the music.

Hope the Flower - Sonorous Faith Pt. 1 (2020) EN

Thailand's Hope the Flower is a collective that assembles a small troop of musicians resulting in an exceptionally spacious and multidimensional music. The band just released their third album called Sonorous Faith Pt. 1.

The release is meant to be delivered in two parts, this is the first one in which the band decided to break a mold and show "a more aggressive and heavier sound than what we have done in the previous album". Indeed, there's a lot of guitars that gain the whole attention together with the good, solid noise (as in the thrilling Sentinel), although every moment has a huge saturation of melancholy too.

Another thing is that the band's strength is diversification of the sound. Interlude I breaks the guitar's cacophony with violins and glockenspiel already. But it's best audible in Shout Out for the Sea, in which both strings and trumpets and keys work fantastically with the guitars, as well as in the album's finish in Rewind Nature. I think I'd rather have more of this in the whole album but it seems that for this, I need to wait for the second part of the release.

Tajlandzkie Hope the Flower to zespół zrzeszający mały szwadron muzyków, co niezmiennie owocuje przestrzennym i wielowymiarowym graniem. Zespół wydał właśnie swoją trzecią płytę długogrającą zatytułowaną Sonorous Faith Pt. 1.

Wydawnictwo ma być docelowo podane w dwóch częściach, to jest część pierwsza, w której zespół zdecydował się zerwać ze schematami i zaprezentować "bardziej gwałtowne i cięższe brzmienie niż to, co robiliśmy na poprzednich albumach". Faktycznie, sporo jest na niej rzucających się w uszy gitar i mocnego depnięcia (jak choćby w porywającym Sentinel), chociaż w każdej chwili nasycenie melancholijną atmosferą jest równie duże. 

No i siła zespołu leży w zróżnicowaniu jego muzyki. Interlude I przerywa nawał gitar dźwiękami skrzypiec i dzwonków. Najlepiej słychać to jednak w Shout Out for the Sea, gdzie i smyczki i dęciaki i klawisze fantastycznie współpracują z głośnymi gitarami, a także w zamykającym album Rewind Nature. Chyba trochę zabrakło mi tego w większej ilości na płycie, ale zdaje się, że dla takiej muzyki poczekać trzeba na część drugą albumu.

Northwest - II (2019) EN

One of the most interesting, most standing out and experimental projects that ever appeared on the blog. Created by two Spaniards: - multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer Ignacio Simón and visual artist and vocalist Mariuca García-Lomas, the London-based Northwest. This winter they are back with their new album simply called II.

The duo that sent 460 hand-written postcards to the fans who bought digital version of their album I, that created their own festival (London Art Festival One), that besides music makes also video-arts. And from the music's point of view, play everything "from contemporary classical music and avant-garde electronica to experimental pop, psychedelia and trip-hop". You can barely not appreciates those artists spelled with capital A, capital R and capital TISTS.

On II there's more neoclassicism and subtle and more atmospheric pop with García-Lomas' beautiful vocals. There's also the whole range of classical instruments (from violins to clarinet) and also... a whole orchestra - City University Experimental Ensemble conducted by... Simón. A real treat for the fans of neoclassical pop ballads.

Jeden z najciekawszych, najbardziej wyróżniających się i eksperymentalnych projektów, który pojawił się na tym blogu. Założony przez dwoje Hiszpanów - multi-instrumentalistę, kompozytora i producenta Ignacio Simóna i artystki wizualnej i wokalistki Mariuki Garcíi-Lomas, londyński Northwest. Tej zimy wraca z nowym albumem zatytułowanym po prostu II.

Duet, który wysłał 460 odręcznie napisanych kartek do fanów, którzy zakupili cyfrową wersję I, który założył swój festiwal (London Art Festival One), który poza muzyką tworzy video-arty. A od strony muzycznej gra wszystko "od współczesnej muzyki klasycznej i awangardowej elektorniki po eksperymentalny pop, psychodelię i trip-hop". Jak tu nie docenić takich artystów przez duże A, duże R i duże RTYŚCI?

Na II wiecej jest neoklasyki i subtelnego i bardzo klimatycznego popu z pięknym wokalem García-Lomas. Do tego dochodzi cała gama instrumentów klasycznych (od skrzypiec po klarnet) a także.. cała orkiestra - City University Experimental Ensemble dyrygowana przez... Simóna. Prawdziwa uczta dla fanów neoklasycznego balladowego popu.

Hold Your Horses! - Datsusara (2019) EN

Broader audience knows the French band Hold Your Horses! from their brilliant music video to the track 70 Million. But still, it was almost a decade ago. Now the musicians often compared to Arcade Fire are back with the EP called Datsusara.

While the French are really close to the sounds of Win Butler's collective, I was more bound to compare them to one of my favourite bands ever, The Paper Chase. This comparison is clearly due to the similarities between the vocals of Charles from Hold Your Horses!  and John Congleton. But there is more to it, it's also about the complexity and the apparent chaos in the both band's music, the French themselves call it as "enthusiastic and colourful pop alchemy". This blending of rock, folk instruments and energy is clearly visible on Datsusara. 

The album is started with Call from the Hill with its folk-like message and really an orchestral execution, but the EP's best is Arms & Arms. Opened with a charming melody on keys and strings, the track quickly changes to something that could easily be included on Someday This Could All Be Yours by the already mentioned The Paper Chase. However, the track from France i a bit more melodic and a tad less aggressive in what it stands for. But the music quality is about just the same.

Hold Your Horses! - Datsusara (2019) PL

W świadomości szerszego kręgu fanów francuski zespół Hold Your Horses! zasłynął dzięki genialnemu teledyskowi do kawałka 70 Million. Niemniej, było to już prawie dekadę temu. Teraz porównywani do Arcade Fire muzycy wracają z EP-ką Datsusara.

O ile faktycznie Francuzi porównywani sa do zespołu Wina Butlera, mnie skojarzył się z jednym z moich ulubionych formacji ever, The Paper Chase. To porównanie bierze się oczywiście z podobieństwa wokalu Charlesa z Hold Your Horses!  i Johna Congletona. Ale również ze złożoności i pozornego chaosu muzyki obu zespołów, zresztą Francuzi w efektowny sposób opisuje ją jako "entuzjastyczna i barwna popowa alchemia". Ta mieszanka rocka, folkowego instrumentarium i energii świetnie ukazana jest na Datsusarze. 

Album otwiera Call from the Hill z folkowym przesłaniem i naprawdę orkiestrowym wykonaniem, jednak najlepsza na płycie jest Arms & Arms. Otwarty urokliwą melodią na klawisze i smyczki, bardzo szybko zamienia się w kawałek, który spokojnie mógłby znaleźć się na Someday This Could All Be Yours przywoływanego wcześniej The Paper Chase. Chociaż kawałek z Francji jest trochę bardziej melodyjny i mniej agresywny w przekazie. Natomiast poziom tak samo wysoki.

cintaadhesiva - FRONTEIRA PARAISO (2019) EN

Cintaadhesiva is a multimedia project the core of which is to put together poetry, music and visual arts. From the lyrics perspective led by Silvia Penas, from the music one by Jesús Andrés Tejada, the Spanish (Galician) collective does a lot so everybody could appreciate Iberian poetry without the knowledge of the language. Check it out on the January album FRONTEIRA PARAISO.

If anybody's tempted to depict the album to be recited text accompanied by music, the artists had prepared a reply for this: "It is an organic whole where text, music and video are not accompanied, but rather try to merge and confuse". The test doesn't function without the musi and the music without the text. That makes it especially sad that in order to fully appreciate the project's work one would have to speak Galician (even Spanish is not enough). On the other hand though, the poignant voice of Xabi Xil Xardón can be easily treated and appreciated as another kind of instrument.

And there are many of them. Cintaadhesiva inspires awe with the diversity of the music that sounds like one of the best soundtracks to an eerie spectacle. On one hand we have electric guitars, on the other the orchestral section, and they sometimes are more epic and sometimes more swinging (Lume). But always entirely unique.

cintaadhesiva - FRONTEIRA PARAISO (2019) PL

Cintaadhesiva to multimedialny projekt, który w swojej istocie spaja poezję, muzykę i sztuki wizualne. Od strony tekstowej dowodzony przez Silvię Penas, a od muzycznej przez Jesúsa Andrésa Tejadę, hiszpański kolektyw robi wiele by każdy mógł poczuć magię iberyjskiej poezji nie znając języka. Sprawdźcie na styczniowej płycie FRONTEIRA PARAISO.

Jeśli kogoś kusi by użyć przy tym albumie stwierdzenia, że jest to recytowany tekst akompaniowany muzyką, artyści mają na to przygotowaną odpowiedź: "It is an organic whole where text, music and video are not accompanied, but rather try to merge and confuse". Tekst nie istnieje tutaj bez muzyki, a muzyka bez tekstu. Tym bardziej szkoda, że żeby w pełni projekt docenić należałoby mówić po galicyjsku (nawet nie po hiszpańsku). Z drugiej jednak strony, przejmujący głos Xabi Xil Xardón potraktować można jako kolejny, fascynujący instrument.

Tych i tak jest dużo. Cintaadhesiva zachwyca różnorodnością muzyki, która brzmi jak najlepsza ścieżka dźwiękowa do przedziwnego spektaklu. Mamy więc z jednej strony gitary elektryczne, a z drugiej sekcję orkiestralną, niekiedy bardziej epickie, niekiedy zupełnie rozkołysane (Lume). Ale za każdym razem natomiast zupełnie niepowtarzalne.

FRONTEIRA PARAISO jest darmowa.

Hazards of swimming naked come from a very hot part of Australia (hence, probably, their name) and it's not without significance as they claim: "The humidity and vibrancy of that region permeates their music" that reaches places typical for their musical influences such as MONO, Mogwai or Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

Another interesting description of their music is the following: "loud:quiet:not-so-loud:not-so-quiet:louder:quietest:not-quite-quiet:loudest". Indeed, the balance between the more peaceful fragments and the ones in which the Australians' music reaches the sky is the key. The guitar-based tracks are written in such a way that keeps the listener's attention while they never know if after a peaceful track enriched with samples (sometimes very interesting ones talking about, i.e., the state of the music education in waiting for 5120) the next one won't be something wilder and crazier.

Extremely interesting is the lullaby in sofðu unga ástin mín sung in Icelandic by Bjarnheiður Kristinsdóttir. She is not the only guest on the album, another ones bring some orchestral support with cello, violas and even horn, adding a lot of grandeur to the whole album.

Hazards of swimming naked pochodzą z bardzo gorącej części Australii (stąd pewnie nazwa) i nie jest to bez znaczenia jak sami twierdzą: "wilgoć i żywotność tego rejonu rezonuje w ich muzyce", która sięga rejonów typowych dla inspiracji zespołu, takich jak MONO, Mogwai czy Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

Innym ciekawym opisem ich twórczości jest ten: "głośno:cicho:nie-tak-głośno:nie-tak-cicho:głośniej:najciszej:nie-całkiem-cicho:najgłośniej". Faktycznie, balans między fragmentami spokojnymi, a tymi, w których muzyka Australijczyków podchodzi pod nieboskłon jest tu kluczowy. Gitarowe utwory napisane są w taki sposób, że umiejętnie trzymają uwagę słuchacza w szachu bo nie wiadomo, czy po spokojnym kawałku wzbogaconym samplem (np. wyjątkowo interesującym opowiadającym o kondycji edukacji muzycznej w waiting for 5120) nie nastąpi coś bardziej szalonego i dzikiego.

Wyjątkowo ciekawy jest natomiast kołysanka sofðu unga ástin mín zaśpiewana po islandzku przez Bjarnheiður Kristinsdóttir. Nie jest ona jedynym gościem na płycie, inni zapewniają wsparcie całkiem orkiestralne z wiolonczelą, wiolą czy nawet rogiem dodając całemu albumowi prawdziwego rozmachu.
