Give Up to Failure - Burden (2020) EN

Wrocław-based Polish band playing very dark and very noisy blend of shoegaze and darkwave. This is Give Up to Failure, band that started to intrigue me playing live, now released a very interesting debut LP called Burden.

It seems to me that the Poles really underline their shoegaze inspirations. Indeed, the album really is loud and guitar-filled in the shoegaze style: more of the wall of guitar sounds than metal riffs. On the other hand, I'd rather call them darkwave, especially when it comes to the cold, dispersed vocals with the very coldwave vibes. And then, there's also rather flat sound and minimalist compositions. Atmosphere, darkness and melancholic noise.

It seems that their Bandcamp found compromise tagging their new album as darkgaze. Noise can be found everywhere on it, especially in tracks such as After the Fall or the final Burial Ground. But this noise is dirty, furious and not-at-all tamed. And it suits the band very well.

Polacy z Wrocławia grający bardzo mroczny i bardzo noise'owy blend shoegaze'u i darkwave'u. Oto Give Up to Failure, zespół, który zaintrygował mnie na żywo, a teraz wydał bardzo ciekawy debiutancki long play zatytułowany Burden.

Zdaje się, że Polacy bardzo podkreślają swoje shoegaze'owe inspiracje. I faktycznie, na krążku z pewnością jest głośno i bardzo gitarowo ale właśnie w shoegaze'owym stylu: raczej ściana gitar niż metalowe riffy. Z drugiej strony, sam bardziej nazwałbym ich darkwave'em, zwłaszcza jeśli chodzi o zimny, rozproszony wokal w bardzo zimnofalowym stylu. Do tego dochodzi raczej płaski dźwięk i minimalistyczne kompozycje. Atmosfera, mrok i melancholijny hałas.

Wygląda na to, że ich Bandcamp poszedł na kompromis i otagował nową płytę grupy jako darkgaze. Hałasu jest co niemiara, zwłaszcza w takich kawałkach jak After the Fall czy finałowym Burial Ground. Ale jest to hałas brudny, noise'owy, zupełnie nie ułagodzony. Bardzo z tym zespołowi do twarzy.

MVGRE - Punks De La Ola Oscura EP (2018) EN

The title of the EP means exactly "The punks of the darkwave" And it's basically enough to describe the music created by the Argentinian artist known as MVGRE.

All of the three not very long songs are drowned in the same atmosphere of nihilism and fascination of several decade old electronic music. Plus the dispersed vocal that brings this darkgazing flavour. Synth compositions tell the stories of fear of the future ("Paranoia is my shield I can't get rid of, let's leave the future in front of us" in "Dejemos El Futuro Atrás") and personality crisis ("How can I heal? How can I believe?" in "Porcelana Marcial"). 

The whole album has a lot of this non-professional coldwave's charm which makes this music honest and more reliable than other genres. And since it is an invocation about pain of existence, we should feel for the artist and treasure the emotions he put in his music.

Tytuł EPki projektu z Buenos Aires oznacza ni mniej ni więcej jak "punki darkwave'u". W zasadzie tyle wystarczy do opisu muzyki tworzonej przez Argentyńczyka znanego jako MVGRE. 

Wszystkie trzy niedługie utwory mają tę samą atmosferę nihilizmu łamanego przez fascynację mroczną elektroniką sprzed kilku dekad. Do tego rozproszony wokal dodający całości darkgaze'ującego posmaku. Synthowe kompozycje opowiadają o lęku przed przyszłością ("Paranoja to tarcza, której nie potrafię się pozbyć, zostawmy przyszłość przed nami" w "Dejemos El Futuro Atrás") i kryzysie osobowości ("W jaki sposób mogę się uleczyć? W jaki sposób mógłbym uwierzyć?" w "Porcelana Marcial"). 

Całość ma w sobie dużo uroku nieprofesjonalnej zimnej fali, takie, która jest bardziej szczera i wiarygodna od innych gatunków. A że całość jest o inwokacją o bólu istnienia, należy tylko współczuć autorowi i cieszyć się emocjami, które zawarł w muzyce.

Vlimmer - IIIIIIII​/​IIIIIIIII (8 & 9) (2017) EN

Vlimmer doesn't need to be introduced to anyone who reads this blog on regular basis. Aparat from that he is a productive artist and how atmospheric everything he produces is, we all know that he likes surprising his audience and change his music. He has just released two EP-s and they are no exceptions.

The eighth EP is opened by a surprisingly aggressive wall of sound in "Beutenacht", that in time transforms into extremely climatic darkgaze with the artist's vocals that never disappoint. The diffused vocal and synth melodies are drowned in this vlimmerish gloomy mood and go on until the album ends. Sometimes they are interrupted though by some astounding attractions like for example oriental sound of keys in "Hirngespinst".

Meanwhile, the ninth album sounds as if Vlimmer had been listening to some elctropop and decided to record his impression on that topic. Dark compositions are lined with irregular beats and "Metropolo" is its peak as it sounds like a cold-wave disco with neons replaced by smoke penetrating white lasers.

Vlimmer - IIIIIIII​/​IIIIIIIII (8 & 9) (2017) PL

Żadnemu z bywalców tego bloga Vlimmera przedstawiać nie trzeba. Oprócz tego jak płodnym jest artystą i jak bardzo klimatyczne jego płody są, wiemy o nim również tyle, że lubi zaskakiwać i zmieniać nieco kolejne swoje utwory. Wydał ostatnio dwie kolejne EP-ki i one nie odstają od tej reguły.

Ósma otworzona jest przez zaskakującą agresywnością ścianą dźwięku w "Beutenacht", która zmienia się po chwili w bardzo klimatyczny darkgaze z niezawodnym wokalem artysty. Rozproszony wokal i syntezatorowe melodie utopione w tym vlimmerowym ponurym nastroju ciągną się aż do końca płyty. Czasem jednak przerywane są przez zadziwiające atrakcje, jak np orientalnie brzmiące klawisze w "Hirngespinst".

Dziewiąta tymczasem brzmi jakby Vlimmer nasłuchał się electropopu i postanowił nagrać swoją impresję na ten temat. Mroczne kompozycje poprzetykane są nieregularnymi bitami, a "Metropolo" to już w ogóle zimnofalowa dyskoteka, na której zamiast neonów dym przetykają białe jak śmierć lasery.

Część ósma i dziewiąta razem kosztują 21 złotych (5 EUR).

Sadness Isolation - Tragic (2017) EN

Latin America should bring connotations with heat but my music discoveries indicate something else, it is a kingdom of cold wave. Today, another example of this is Sadness Isolation created by Daniel Rossier from Peru.

The characteristic trait of his is combination of coldness, darkness and high pace. Apart from the deep voice and whispers that appear out of nowhere, darkness is suggested by the depressive image and lyrics. The name of the project is quite clear - the isolation caused by sadness may lead to creation of great art and the gloomy Rossier is a perfect example of this claim.

The coldness is almost everywhere in this album. From the cold-blooded vocal to flat and clear bass line and the synth backgrounds making the whole thing very suggestive. While it's all true, the tracks are also surprisingly fast, very often almost disco-like if there's someone who likes such dark discos. The most important though is that, as it's the artist's goal, his music contemplates the 80s like a not very distant yesterday.

Sadness Isolation - Tragic (2017) PL

Ameryka Łacińska powinna kojarzyć się z gorącem, tymczasem moje muzyczne odkrycia mówią co innego, to królestwo zimnego wave'u. Kolejnym przedstawicielem jest dziś peruwiańskie Sadness Isolation tworzone przez Daniela Rossiera.

Jego znakiem rozpoznawczym jest połączenie zimna, mroku i tempa. Oprócz głębokiego głosu, pojawiających się czasem znienacka szeptów mroczne są przede wszystkim depresyjny imydż i teksty utworów. Nazwa projektu to dość jasny przekaz - izolacja spowodowana smutkiem potrafi prowadzić do wspaniałej sztuki, mroczny Rossier jest na to dobrym przykładem.

Zimne na tej płycie jest niemal wszystko. Od zimnokrwistego wokalu przez płaski ale wyraźny bas po nadające całości wyrazu warstwy syntezatorowego dźwięku. Tymczasem utwory są zaskakująco szybkie, często prawie dyskotekowe, jeśli ktoś lubi tak mroczne dyskoteki. Najważniejsze jednak, że tak jak chce artysta, jego muzyka kontempluje lata 80. jako nie tak odległe w czasie wczoraj.

Espejo Convexo - Ruina Circular (2017) EN

This nation has this something in them because after Stockhaussen there is another project on our blog, that offers a combination of shoegaze, darkness and cold - Espejo Convexo.  The band from the Mexican capital city's goal is to create music they call a "darkgaze pop" - as catchy as jarring. If you add the feeling of an incoming danger and darkness, no wonder the combination is interesting.

The band is really good at the not easy task of combining genres. Thick bass strings set the course and lead the dark atmosphere of guitars and electronic sounds and really intriguing vocals: shoegazing by Azul Carazo (her name means "blue" in Spanish, the colour of sadness) as in "Color del Cielo" and a colder one by Daniel Arp (e.g. in "El Miedo").

Czemu nie. The whole thing sounds like a calmer and sadder version of the Horrors. The name of the band means a convex mirror - a mirror that exaggerates feelings, disfigures reality, scares with deformation? Why not.

Espejo Convexo - Ruina Circular (2017) PL

Ta nacja chyba coś w sobie ma bo po Stockhaussen na blogu pojawia się właśnie kolejny meksykański mariaż shoegaze'u z mrokiem i zimnem - Espejo Convexo.  Zespół ze stolicy kraju za wyzwanie wyznaczył sobie stworzenie muzyki mogącej uchodzić za "darkgaze pop" - tak chwytliwej jak i drażniącej. Jeśli dodać do tego uczucie zagrożenia i nadciągającego mroku, trzeba przyznać, że mieszanka jest intrygująca.

Zespół fenomenalnie radzi sobie z zadaniem niełatwego połączenia gatunków. Grube struny basu wytaczają szlak, a podąża nim mroczna atmosfera gitarowo-elektroniczna i niezwykle intrygujący shoegaze'owy wokal Azul Carazo (jej imię oznacza kolor niebieski, który jak wiemy w kulturze angielskiej oznacza smutek) - np w "Color del Cielo" lub chłodniejszy głos Daniela Arpa (w "El Miedo").

Całość przywodzi mi na myśl łagodniejszą i smutniejszą wersję the Horrors. Nazwa zespołu oznacza tyle co wypukłe zwierciadło - lustro uwypuklające uczucia, przeinaczające rzeczywistość, straszące deformacjami? Czemu nie.

Violent Dreams - Scared of the Dark (2017) EN

Violent Dreams, Liverpool based project, is supposed to be using violent sounds to express beauty. It's one of the projects whose name says absolutely everything. It is both loud and dreamy, just like during a downpour in Merseyside.

Violent Dreams should be classified as lo-fi music in which the quality of sound is not as important as the overall atmosphere. Personally, I think that lo-fi projects have to be twice as good to catch my attention as they can't rely only on the pleasure from listening to perfect sounds.So the fact that the Englishmen are on this blog now says a lot.

And they had to be here because this is the place for sad and melancholic albums as this one. As if there is a song about romance, it is also about depression ("Pieces"), if there's a song about broken heart, it's also about hope ("Laura") and finally, if there's one about fear, it is also about love ("Scared of the Dark").

Violent Dreams - Scared of the Dark (2017) PL

Violent Dreams, projekt z Liverpoolu, w założeniu używający gwałtownych dźwięków by wyrazić piękno. Jest też jednym z tych projektów, których nazwa mówi absolutnie wszystko, co trzeba wiedzieć. Jest głośno i onirycznie, tak jak w czasie liverpoolskiej ulewy.

Violent Dreams bezsprzecznie zakwalifikować można do nurtu lo-fi, gdzie jakość dźwięków ustępuje ważności nastrojowi. Dla mnie projekty lo-fi'owe muszą być szczególnie dobre, bo nie mogą nadrabiać samą przyjemnością ze słuchania perfekcyjnych dźwięków. Tak więc sam fakt, że Anglicy się na blog znaleźli świadczy o nich jak najlepiej.

A znaleźć się musieli bo jest to miejsce dla tak smutnych i melancholijnych płyt. Bo jeśli jest tu piosenka o romansie to jest też o depresji ("Pieces"), jeśli jest o zranionym sercu to jest też o nadziei ("Laura") i w końcu jeśli jest o strachu to również o miłości ("Scared of the Dark").

SUIR - Ater (2017) PL

Debiut niemieckiego duetu SUIR to połączenie darkwave'u, post-punku i shoegaze'u. Atakują dwoma frontami - gęstymi dźwiękami syntezatorów i zadziornym oraz głębokim wokalem. Ciężko być wobec tej ofensywy obojętnym.

Wydany przez Black Verb Records krążek zaczyna się budującym napięcie intro, które przechodzi w "Realism". A ten jest niespieszny i pełny niezwykłej - mrocznej i pokolorowanej elektroniką atmosfery. Melodie wygrywane na syntezatorach nie należą do tych oczywistych i czasem zgrzytają między zębami ("Den of Thieves" zamieniający się z czasem w plątaninę dźwięków), co pasuje do mrocznej i awangardowej muzyki. Bardziej gitarowe jest "White Spheres" ale "122 Eyes" to już prawdziwy ocean dźwięków, który tylko przypadkiem opatrzony jest zimnofalowym wokalem.

Płytę zamyka klamrą "No More Reality" ze swoimi niepokojącymi tłami i leniwym tempem.

SUIR - Ater (2017) EN

The debut album by German SUIR is a combination of darkwave, post-punk and shoegaze. It attacks on two fronts - with dense synthesizer sounds and belligerent vocal. One can hardly stay indifferent facing twe two.

The album released by Black Verb Records starts with a suspense building intro that is continued by "Realism". Which is slow and full of an uncanny mood - a dark one, coloured with electronic sounds. The melodies played on synthesizers are not, let's say, orthodoxically melodic, sometimes they are like grains of sand between your teeth ("Den of Thieves" that turns into a real mess of sounds) but it really suits this dark and avant-garde music. The next track, "White Spheres" is more guitar-based but soon enough, in "122 Eyes", the band comes back to creating an ocean of sound that almost by an accident is used as a background for some cold wave vocals.

The album and its composition is closed by "No More Reality" with its unnerving background noise and lazy pace.

Thanatoloop & Vlimmer - Vlimmer & Thanatoloop (2017) PL

Vlimmer, nasz dobry muzyczny znajomy zza zachodniej granicy wdał się własnie w kolejną po duecie z The Oceaneer fascynującą kolaborację. Tym razem jego partnerem został chilijski producent Michel Leroy Valdés znany jako Thanatoloop, który swoją mroczną muzykę tworzy już od ponad dwudziestu lat.

Płyta powstała więc na dwóch kontynentach, prawdopodobnie w wirtualnej przestrzeni pomiędzy Chile a Niemcami, a mimo to brzmi jakby była od początku do końca zagrana w jakiejś z dawna opuszczonej gotyckiej katedrze wśród całkowitych ciemności. Mroczne wokale na przemian niemieckie i hiszpańskie powolne tempo oraz elektronika, której zdecydowanie bliżej do cmentarza niż tanecznego parkietu tworzą ten wyjątkowy klimat.

Thanatoloop & Vlimmer - Vlimmer & Thanatoloop (2017) EN

Vlimmer, our good musical friend from Germany, has just gotten involved into another fantastic collaboration. After cooperation with The Oceaneer, he became the partner of the Chilean producer Michel Leroy Valdés known as Thanatoloop, who makes his music already for over 20 years.

So the album was created on two different continents, probably in the virtual space between Germany and Chile, but still it sounds as if from the beginning to the end was all played in a long time abandoned gothic cathedral in complete darkness. Gloomy vocals in both German and Spanish, slow pace and the electronic music that is definitely closer to a cemetery than to a dance floor are the factors creating this unique atmosphere.

Ono Scream - Ono Scream (2017) EN

Uncommonly long as for this blog, the album by Ono Scream from Belgium couldn't be missed out here.Because it's worth attention from the first to the fourteenth track. OS is a project by Bart Willems known as a frontman of Aparaat, who in his solo works combines inspirations from his youth (Bauhaus, Fad Gadgets, Simple Minds) and today (Soft Moon, Tropic of Cancer) and filters it with his own, very dark, perception.

The album immediately shows its best side as "Hollow Man" is one of the best songs of this month for me. Shoegazing vocal combined with catchy coldwave and melodies and, can't be left unnoticed, depressive lyrics do the trick. later it is also unsettling in "That Salty Taste" and more airy in "This Endless Walking", in which there is also a beautiful female vocal. Another great track with quite straightforward message is "What Have They Done".

The whole album balances between moody shoegaze and protest-songing coldwave. That's why dull and icy voice of Willems fits it perfectly. As well as twitching in some places and droning in other guitars in the background.

Ono Scream - Ono Scream (2017) PL

Nadzwyczaj długa jak na ten blog płyta Ono Scream z Belgii nie mogła się tu nie pojawić. Bo od pierwszego do czternastego utworu zasługuje na najwyższą uwagę. OS to Bart Willems znany jako frontman Aparaatu, który zabrał się za projekt solowy, w którym rozlicza się ze swoimi inspiracjami z młodości (Bauhaus, Fad Gadgets, Simple Minds) i teraźniejszości (Soft Moon, Tropic of Cancer) i przefiltrowuje je przez swoją własną, bardzo mroczną, percepcję.

Płyta od razu prezentuje swoją najlepszą stronę. Bo "Hollow Man" to dla mnie jeden z lepszych utworów tego miesiąca. Shoegaze'owy wokal połączony z przebojowym coldwave'em i chwytliwą melodią oraz, nie da się ukryć, depresyjnym tekstem robią swoją robotę. Dalej jest równie niepokojąco w "That Salty Taste" lub bardziej eterycznie w "This Endless Walking", w którym pojawia się również żeński wokal. Genialnym kawałkiem, bardzo wyrazistym w swoim przesłaniu jest "What Have They Done".

Cały materiał balansuje pomiędzy nastrojowym shoegaze'em a protest-songującą zimną falą. Doskonale nadaje się do tego głuchy i zimny głos Willemsa i czasem szarpiące, a czasem nastrojowo drone'ujące gitary w tłach.

King Woman - Created in the Image of Suffering (2017) EN

King Woman makes one of this year's hottest full length debuts, so good they're on Bandcamp and could end up here as well. The Californians name tag themselves as doom rock and that's no coincidence - heavy sounds of stoner guitars can hit so hard. But there's also Kristina Esfandiari's vocal that makes the whole thing sound shoegaze-y (or rather darkgaze-y).

"Create in the Image of Suffering" begins with an intro followed by the album's hit because that's the way to call "Utopia". But the album keeps your attention til the very end. The combination of tough music and airy vocal (but the vocalist can also show some claws, like in "Shame") with dark atmosphere doesn't leave you indifferent. Bandcamp's website says that they are some kind of unbelievable concoction of Black Sabbath and Mazzy Star and that's so very true.

King Woman - Created in the Image of Suffering (2017) PL

King Woman to jeden z najgorętszych długogrających debiutów tego roku, jak dobrze, że znalazł się też na Bandcampie i mógł trafić też tutaj. Kalifornijczycy określają się jako doom rock i nie ma w tym przypadku, ciężka atmosfera i stonerowe gitary potrafią wgnieść w ziemię. Ale z drugiej strony pojawia się też wokal Kristiny Esfandiari, który nadaje całości shoegaze'owego (a raczej mocno darkgaze'owego) sznytu.

"Create in the Image of Suffering" zaczyna się intrem i od razu największym swoim przebojem, bo tak należy określić "Utopię". Jednak album wciąga do samego końca. To połączenie twardej muzyki i eterycznego wokalu (chociaż, wokalistka też potrafi pokazać, na co ją stać (np. w "Shame")) a także mrocznej atmosfery nie daje przejść obok siebie obojętnie. Na stronie Bandcampu porównywani są do Black Sabbath w przedziwny sposób stopionego z Mazzy Star i jest to porównanie niezwykle zasadne.
