Meandering in the Stream of Contrast from Old TV to the Pope

Today’s prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “contrast.” Use it any way you’d like. Have fun!

When I was a kid in the 60s and a teenager in the 70s, our TV had knobs that you turned for contrast, brightness, volume, and of course changing the channel, all of which we had to get off the couch to do, but most of that time, there were only 3 channels to choose from, ABC, NBC, and CBS. I think public broadcasting came next. Then sometime in the 70s, seems like I was in my late teens, a new channel came on. It was Turner broadcasting, if I remember correctly. Ted Turner died recently. He was in his 80s.

I remember calling a friend on the phone (by dialing the number, most likely, on a phone connected to the wall, ) and telling them about the new channel and that there was a news lady wearing globe earrings with goldfish in them! That’s one of those memories that stands out clearly after all these years.

You know who did NOT die recently? Sir David Attenborough, a naturalist, narrator, and producer of documentaries about nature. He just celebrated his 100th birthday! The stream of consciousness now pulls me to Mutal of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, a weekly series about animals on TV in the 70s.

Nature contrasts with modern buildings, unless the architect/builder makes an effort to design and build in harmony with nature. Like a hobbit house! A hole in the side of a hill. That would be really cool to build, but it would take a lot of work. Sigh. I do like to watch videos of such things occasionally, but I don’t think I want to work that hard.

Contrast. A little contrast can be a good thing. It gives life variety. David and I have contrast in our personalities. He’s a type A workaholic, even in retirement. He admits this. I’m naturally more laid back, though my life as a working mom might have looked type A once upon a time, because sometimes you just have to push yourself. David is an early bird. I’m a night owl. But our values are very similar, and that’s what is important. David takes Marley out for a long walk at around 7am most mornings. Last night, he asked to go outside at midnight, (Marley, not David) and I was still awake, so I got to look at the stars.

The stream is going to something about the contrast between the current US president and past presidents, especially leaders like Jimmy Carter, JFK, and Barrack Obama. Talk about stark contrast! Then there’s the whole thing with the pope. Way to go, Pope Leo!

Oh my, the stream is twisting and bending all over the place today.

Here are some recent photos that seem to illustrate contrast. You might see horse heads in the clouds over Pilot Mountain.

PS: Happy Mother’s Day to all moms everywhere, including dog moms, cat moms and Mother Earth.

SoCS: Neato, Groovy, and Hiking Highlights

Today’s prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “neat.” Use it any way you’d like. Enjoy!

Neato, Cheeto, Frito Lay

Far out, groovy, those were the days

No cell phones, lap tops, or video games

No presidents calling people names.

If you called and I was out

You’d have to try again.

No caller ID or voice mail.

You hoped it was a friend.

Playing in the sun

Or hanging in the room

Listening to vinly

My how time has zoomed!

I think I’ll just leave it at that for my attempt at Stream of Consciousness poetry. Thought about writing about how I’ve never been a neat freak. Never will be, but then, it’s all relative. My kids probably think I am. But no. My home is an eclectic mix of rustic farmhouse, vintage, with a hint of hobbit in the living room and my hippie corner in the guest room.

The record player and albums are close to 50 years old

Oh! I did some art recently. Got myself to a class at a little studio on Main Street and ended up with this tree:

Star Willow

I added another strand of leaves since taking this photo. Not sure if I like it better or not, but who cares? At least I got back to making art.

Nature is not neat. Nature’s designs have symmetry, which can be neat. But nature is neat in the slang sense of being cool, groovy, and far out.

Another thing I did that I’ve been wanting to do besides art, is I went hiking with my daughter Ayla to my favorite spot so far: The Lower Cascades of Hanging Rock State Park. My favorite thing there was watching the sunlight reflected on the rock walls around the pool. Talk about a natural high!

I’m not sure if you can see the video. It says it’s private. ??? Can you see them if you click the arrow? There are two videos before the photos.

video ? Click that arrow.

SoCS: My Favorite Places, Naturally in Nature

Today’s prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “favorite place.” Use it any way you’d like. Enjoy!

A favorite place can be real or imagined, or a combination of both. If I were to create a favorite place, it would have quiet sounds of nature. Gentle bird songs, whispering breezes, and a trickling of water. There would be lush greenery including ferns, trees of course, and a mingling of daisies and black eyed Susans which I’m cultivating. There would be rocks, smooth rocks to sit on or bask in the sun with. There would be only occasional human voices, maybe singing around a fire. Oooh, a cabin down the path that has a fireplace. And dogs. and horses. Now, I’m describing heaven, or what heaven would be for me.

There can be glimpses of heaven on earth. Slices of paradise since Earth IS a paradise or would be if we respected the work of Earth’s Creator, whoever or whatever you believe that is.

There were many years when I lived near the ocean and would have little slices of heaven in the late afternoon which was my favorite time to go to the beach,

Or we’d have an evening moonrise in late September when the water was still warm.

Or a sunset on the intracoastal waterway…

Now, since we’ve moved closer to the western part of North Carolina, there are slices of heaven with waterfalls…

on wooded trails….

… and in my own backyard.

Good News Tuesday for March 4, 2024: Europe’s Leaders Support Ukraine, UN Agreement to Protect Nature, a Boy Saves his Family from House Fire, and Biodegradable Mardi Gras Beads

Seeking Balance One Tuesday at a Time

Europe’s Leaders Express Strong Support for Ukraine

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was welcomed warmly to the Summit held in London with European countries pledging to work for peace in a way that is acceptable to Ukraine. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer led the summit on Sunday to rally support and “throw their full weight behind Ukraine.” Learn more here from AP News.

UN Reaches Agreement on Funding to Protect Nature

Two years after a landmark deal to protect nature by 2030, the United Nations agreed to a specific funding plan to protect ecosystems and wildlife. This article explains the challenges requiring compromise and decisions that were made including the
“creation of a permanent body to represent the interests of Indigenous people.”

“This is something very beautiful because it’s around protecting life that we have come together, and there cannot be anything higher than that.”

Susana Muhamad, COP16 President of Columbia

A Boy Saves Family from House Fire in Alaska

8-year-old Colton Koonooka-Kowchee, jumped out a window and ran for help to save his family from a house fire. Here’s the story from Alaska Public Media.

Biodegradable Mardi Gras Beads

Knowing that traditional Mardi Gras beads take 500 years to decompose and release toxins, students at Louisian State University created affordable biodegradable beads using 3D printers with bio-based plastics that decompose in just months. They even put seeds inside what they’ve named “Plant Me Beads.”

Do Not Allow Injustice to Consume Your Light

Today’s prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “use ‘just’ in your first sentence.” Use the word “just” any way you’d like in your first sentence, then just write to your heart’s content. Enjoy!

Sometimes I just can’t wrap my brain around certain things like the US national election results and cruelty to animals.

Thinking about injustice reminded me of this quote I saw recently:

This, my dear

is the greatest challenge

to being alive.

To witness injustice in the world

and not allow it to consume our light.

~Thich Nhat Hanh

How do we keep our light alive and strong in spite of injustice?

I walked away to ponder this a bit and realized that being in nature helps. I’m good at that. And singing. Singing helps me breathe deeper. If you’re in a place where singing is not okay, then hum.

We can always hum. Maybe a moan could turn into a hum…. Or an Ommmm.

It can also help to do good deeds and acts of kindness, even small ones.

From JRR Tolkien

Then there’s gratitude.

I’m grateful that my apparent brush with shingles has been mild. Makes me wonder if it really is shingles. The clinician I saw Tuesday said the rash looked like shingles to her. It really bothered me for a few days, but it’s definitely getting better. My energy was extra low right before this rash showed up on my torso about a week ago. But Thursday, I had lots of energy for which I am thankful. Maybe the energy is due to the anti-viral I’m taking. I scheduled to get established with an acupuncturist Dec. 5, and I’m trying not to watch the TV news. Instead, I’m watching Christmas movies, meditating and doing yoga, to build my immune system up and keep my light going strong.

Just breathe.

Inhale…. Exhale…..

How do you not let injustice consume your light?

What keeps your light glowing brightly?

Here are some recent photos of things that help my light glow brighter:

I love watching my guys play.

SoCS: Plane Ramblings, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Sanctuary Friends

David piloted with me as passenger.

Today’s prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is: “plain/plane.” Use one, use ’em both, bonus points if you get ’em both in your post. Have fun!

I haven’t flown with my husband David as pilot since that first flight a while back when I felt so sick I almost threw up in spite of Dramamine. Now, I have a new Rx waiting and ginger candy, but I’m waiting for the right time with perfect weather and scheduling. I like keeping my feet on the ground and can’t think too much about being way up high in a tiny plane. It’s the kind of thing that makes me pray hard for safety.

Is praying a form of reaching out to another plane of existence? Or is God right here with us? It’s another plane with connections, I think. I’m thinking right this minute of Jesus praying for God to take the cup of torturous pain away from him and then turning his will over to God, trusting. Letting go. Letting God take care of him.

I was nudged to add this clip of Ted Neeley (at about 80 years old) singing the Gethsemane song from Jesus Christ Superstar. The movie playing in the background is the 1973 version that planted seeds in my agnostic brain many years ago.

Letting go has never been easy for me. It’s never been plain and simple. Most things I let go of have claw marks. Let it go, but not quite. Take it back again. Worry about it some more, then let it go again.

But I don’t think I’ll ever jump out of a plane. Unless it’s on fire and we’re over water. But who wants to think about that? Not me! I’d rather think of glimpses of another plane of existence we sometimes get where the veil is thin. That happens in the mountains or at the ocean – places where we can see and feel the vastness of creation.

I’m hoping we’ll go to the beach tomorrow which is Saturday when you’re reading this. It’s so weird to live 15 or 30 minutes from the beach and rarely go. Part of that is that we take it for granted. But we’re coming up on the season when it will be crowded, especially the beach that’s 15 minutes away. I’m looking forward to going to the mountains in a few weeks. Looking for those places where the veil is thin. But then, we can also create those places of connection with intention…. or just live in the moment and enjoy this side of the veil. Lots to enjoy as long as we don’t watch much bad news. But then maybe Nature is medicine for that.

Well, enough rambling with words. A picture is worth a thousand words.

The gallery starts with some of my friends from Blueberry Lane Farm Animal Sanctuary who help me be grounded. Then we have nature photos from the neighborhood. Click each photo to see the entire image.

Tipping Points for Self Care, Peace, and Planet Earth

Our Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is: “tip.” Use it as a noun or a verb. Have fun!

So many possibilities for “tip.” That’s why Linda is the hostess with the most-est, and best-est prompts.

The tip of the iceberg can seem to be what caused the tipping point, but there was a lot more underneath. Lots of straws under the last straw. It’s like when you are in a relationship that’s not a good fit, but you stay there because there are some good things. Maybe he makes you laugh, but not as much as he used to, because he makes you cry, too. Maybe he has a good heart, but a crazy mind – not good crazy – paranoid, jealous, controlling. And then finally, something happens to make you realize, it’s not worth it. You deserve better.

The tipping point can happen in a job, or any toxic relationship – one too many criticisms, one too many late nights, stomachaches and other signs of stress…. Our bodies tell us if we pay attention. Eventually the time comes to get out, and you realize you can.

(From Pixabay perhaps?)

Forgiveness can come later. But forgiveness doesn’t mean we have to have lunch. We can forgive from a distance.

What a relief when we step away from something that has felt like a suit that didn’t really fit. That’s happened to me recently. I felt obligated to be part of something that became more restrictive (mentally and spiritually) over time. Now that I’ve stepped away, I feel more authentic.

A tipping point can also go in the direction of something good! What’s it going to take to get me to take that bike sitting on the catio to get fixed so I can ride it? What’s it going to take to get me back to a gym, or maybe a physical therapist, for my occasional back spasms? Those back spasms (almost gone now) were the tipping point to get me to pay someone do a little yard work instead of trying to do it all myself.

I’m hoping for a tipping point that will make Putin really back off and give Ukraine the power to be free of tyranny. Can there be a tipping point for peace?

I’m hoping for a tipping point that gets us to take care of planet earth. Not another crisis, but maybe that’s what it will take. It could go either way.

From Facebook

Speaking of nature, I greatly enjoyed the perfect weather and company when my friend met me at Airlie Gardens to take pictures last week.

Nature Loves Cycles

Photo by JoAnna of the Forest

Nature loves cycles

They come by design

Built in to our blood

Sleep cycles and life cycles

Day to night to seasons.

Life, death, rebirth.

The circle of life

Comes again and again.

On that we can depend.

It might not look like what we want.

Our messes have consequences.

Bugs could inherit the earth.

But life will continue in some form.

Will we nurture the diversity of life?

Will we help nature and ourselves be well?

Our choices and time will tell.

With each new day and each new night,

We have a chance to love life.

And on a lighter note: Carly Simon Sings “Coming Around Again” with the “Itsy Bitsy Spider.”

Thanks to our host, Linda Hill, for the opportunity to offer today’s prompt.

Thursday Tree Love: A Bowl and a Bend

I can only begin to imagine what might have given this tree such an unusual shape with a bowl at the bottom and a slender trunk bent back into an arch, yet still growing leaves. We discovered this unique individual on my daughter’s May birthday hike through a nature preserve in southeatern North Carolina. I do not know what kind of tree it is, perhaps some kind of laurel, but I do know that it is a survivor. Here are some close ups:

The Ev-Henwood Nature Preserve contains a variety of habitats and diverse terrain:
