When Thoughts Come True

How many times have you ever thought of something that could happen...and then it does?

Feeding the herd this mornin', I tripped while pushing the wheelbarrow, fell forward and landed with my lower teeth on the rim of the metal wheelbarrow. Tripped over a damn rock...which I have done too many times to remember~and always thought "what if?"

One tooth is broke in half and a couple others are loose...split my lip of course, and I look like I was in a fight...and lost.

Off to the dentist...hope they can fix me up.

It can only get better from here today.

This rim rock is what attracted us most to this piece of property. It gives shelter from wind, rain, snow and sun...and it makes a great fence that you don't have to repair!

Sunday Stills ~ A Small Part of a Whole

This week's Sunday Stills photo challenge was pretty fun. We were to take two photos, one of something large, and the second photo would be a small part of the first photo.

I didn't leave the ranch this week as usual, so I made do with my surroundings.

Rim Rock

I never get tired of the beautiful rim rock behind the barn. Sunny mornings such as when this photo was taken is when my favorite light appears.

Standing back from the rim rock you don't see much except for lots of rock, but up close...I could spend hours taking shots of all the interesting plants, shapes and colors. I took a few macro shots, but, I'm just going to share this one...and it made me real excited...

Grass...GREEN Grass!!!

That's green grass coming out of the clump...yeah...spring is coming!!! And yes, that's a bit of snow there on the left.

Friday Fences ~ Needin' Mendin'

No matter how much work gets done, there's always more to do! My Man and I have talked about rebuilding this short line of fence ever since we moved here...over six years now...and it's still standin'!

Sometimes, it's hard to tear down an ol' fence when it's been there for so many years. I think it gives character to the place. But when it becomes a health hazard for the livestock, serious consideration beyond aesthetics takes place.

Seen Better Days

We've contemplated moving the angle of the fence which would relocate the gate going up onto the hill...something we can't seem to decide on...probably the main reason we haven't done anything. The other reason is because it's on a really steep, rocky hillside..which is not going to make it an easy task.

So, for now, I'll just enjoy looking at it for the next while...it could be another six years!

Back in the Day

This ol' fence is the last section that is still standing from the corrals that were behind our house. I've always wondered what it looked like back when it was a working ranch with hundreds of cows and calves...I can hear those cows from yesteryear bawlin' through the wood planks.

Note the rock crib on the right; rock cribs are still built today. It's easier to build a crib than try to sink a hole in this rocky ground! The left side butts up against the rim rock which goes straight up 20 feet or so at that spot.

Sunday Stills~Nature's Frames

Sunday Stills on Monday...always a day late and a dollar short. OH well.

I climbed up to the top of the rim rock and had some fun playing around yesterday. I just didn't get  time to post. BTW, I would never climb around up there at any other time but winter...you just might find something that rattles hidin' in one of those crevices!!

The spot below is really what I wanted to get to...but the gap in the boulders was way beyond where I could reach...off that edge was a straight drop for about 20 feet...I played it on the safe side...

Sunday Stills ~ Rocks and Rock Formations

Rocks...and more rocks...

Well, if we could grow alfalfa like we can grow rocks around here, we'd be rich!

This natural fence line runs three quarters of a mile through our ranch.
Our alfalfa fields at the base of the rim have some
of the best soil in the county because through the centuries the wind
 has blown the top soil off of the upper level onto the lower level.

Buttes such as this are most common.

Every little crack gathers soil has something trying to plant it's roots into it.
Over this edge is a 30 foot drop. The background is BLM land where
you can see the horizontal lines the cattle have made while grazing.

While gathering cow/calf pairs in late September it was
nice to see big trees in the Rattlesnake allotment area.
Here again, plants are growing out of the rock.

Two weeks ago we did a two day cattle drive taking Rancher Dan's
mother cows to his winter ranch in the Princeton area.
This gap in the trail is one of my favorites spots where the
trail narrows. I believe the gap is natural even though
the electrical lines go through.

I always love looking at this small butte. We have arrived at the
half way point on the two day drive. The cows are watered and fed,
and we meet back here first thing in the morning to drive them
the rest of the way...another 14 miles.

This pretty view is on the edge of the Diamond Craters...a very
unique 17,000 acres of volcanic rock formations.

I always love the morning light. As the grass begins to show that we are well into summer, the colors of the sage brush and grasses, mixed with the lichen on the rim rock always makes a pretty picture. Add a few fluffy white clouds with a bright blue sky...and a good cup of coffee...it's another perfect day!
