Monday/19-Aug-19: Busy day today, a trip to the vet, a visit from the mayor and vice-mayor, and a trip to the gendarmerie. Didn't feel like cooking what was on the plan, so exchanged with tomorrow's meal.
We had a halfish version of Spicy Thai Basil Chicken (web). Chopped up some aiguillettes to use instead of ground chicken. This was fast and easy. Served with a bit of basmati rice. Some mini ice cream bars for dessert. Then the last bit of our Toulouse chocolate.
Tuesday/20-Aug-19: Dinner was a half dose of Tortino di Pomodori—Hot Tomato Pie (TuscTable, p108). Except for the part about peeling the tomatoes, this was really easy and very tasty. Then a salad. Then we finished the buttermilk ice cream
Wednesday/21-Aug-19: Dinner was a half dose of Poblanos Stuffed with Cheddar and Chicken (web). Simmered the chicken to cook and used the stock for long-grain brown rice. Had lots of that; froze up enough for some fried rice. English cheddar maybe wasn't the best cheese choice, but still it was quite edible. For second course, I made up a salad of home-grown tomatoes, feta, onions, cuke, and mint. Tasty. Chocolate-covered madeleines for after.
Thursday/22-Aug-19: Shopping today.
Vanessa was on our porch today in spite of the Privé sign. Too much excitement with the maire and gendarmes. We think V actually called the gendarmes. I tried, but they sent me to the mairie. The answer machine message there gave me the maire's cell phone.
Dinner was Roast Cod with Upmarket Mushy Green Peas (How2Eat, p194). Used lieu noir instead of cod. The fish was slightly overdone, cooked much shorter time than asked. The mushy peas were good, certainly better than those from a can. Served with some small boiled potatoes. Chocolate custard things for dessert.
Friday/23-Aug-19: Made some Pineapple Upside-Down Cake (MC) using my old recipe, originally from Betty Crocker, but modified. The recipe in Joy of Cooking for this is a fancy cake with separated eggs. Not what this rustic cake is supposed to be.
I bought another packet of poblanos yesterday and we had a half recipe of Chiles Rellenos Casserole (CL90, p147). Pretty good stuff. Meant to make guacamole, but all four avocados in house were bad. Served with a tomato salad, almost a salsa sort of thing, that was pretty good. Ed's t-shirt showed his dinner, a splash of red wine, some tomato juice, and some caramel from the cake. Oh well.
Saturday/24-Aug-19: Nice afternoon with Cath, we went to the Marché des Potiers in Montbron, then to the art exhibit at the chateau there. It was nice in spite of being so hot, although the chateau was cool inside. We came home, had some tea, and then dinner.
We started with Salade de Mâche aux Magrets de Canard. Not sure where I found this recipe (I just wrote down the ingredients), but it's really simple and delicious. Per person: 4 tranches magret de canard seche, fat removed, 3 sun-dried tomatoes (I made lengthwise slices), 20g of pine nuts, and some parmesan shavings, all topped with a little vinaigrette.
Our main was Escalopines de Veau de Noix et de Roquefort (web). This was easy and super yummy. Used all the topping for slightly less meat. Served with pasta and pesto. Then some Pineapple Upside Down Cake. Nice dinner.
Sunday/25-Aug-19: Dinner from the freezer more or less. Ed barbecued that had marinated for a bit in charmoula. And the rest of the little potatoes I bought on Thursday with some cilantro pesto. And some Courgettes with Lemon, Caper Dressing (web). (Turns out I made these before, in nov14.) All were good. We finished the Pineapple Upside Down Cake for afters.
Yogurt on overnight.

This week in the kitchen
Monday/10-Sep-18: Disappointing dinner. We had Easy Green Curry with Pork (Rains, p138). Used some of our little white eggplants from the potager, which have a really bitter taste. Don't need to make it again. Over basmati rice. Peaches and cream for dessert.
Tuesday/11-Sep-18: This morning we were sitting at breakfast when I saw a motion out of my eye. Thought is was a cat, come a-begging for a yogurt jar, but it turned out to be a tiny mouse dragging a dust bunny from its tail. It was barely moving. I threw a hand towel over it and we put it in a bucket outside. Unfortunately we left the bucket on the ground. After a bit we found the bucket empty and we suspect one of the cats had itself a little treat. The mouse was fully furred but its eyes were barely open. Don't know if it was sickly or a big baby. Feel a bit sad, except for the damage one (or two?) is doing in the pantry shelves.
Dinner was an oldie, half of Spicy Chicken Strips (CL90, 170). Pretty good stuff, even though it takes way more corn chips than asked to get a nice crispy coating. Served with guacamole, some "Spanish" rice, and some mixed veggies (broccoli, canned corn, canned roast pepper strips). A made-up dessert: I defrosted two squares of pâte feuilletée I found in the freezer. Mixed up the last of the mascarpone (about half of a 500g bakje) with an egg, some ground almonds, some lemon juice, a slog of amaretto. Lined a small casserole with the pastry and covered the bottom with frozen, pitted cherries, then topped with the mascarpone mixture. After baking it a while, I realized that I'd forgotten to add sugar, so I sprinkled some brown sugar on the top. It baked about 20min at 400F and another bit at about 350F. Still a bit runny, but tasty. I'm full.
Yogurt on overnight.
Wednesday/12-Sep-18: Shopping today.
Dinner was a halfish recipe of Roasted Salmon & Butternut Squash Salad (EW/sep-oct15, web), with tuna instead of salmon. And that was barbecued, rather than cooked in the oven with the squash. The salad was excellent and a good foil for the fish. Chocolate-covered madeleines for dessert.
Thursday/13-Sep-18: Dinner was (sort of) Fideos with Pasilla Chiles, Avocado, and Crema (VegSups, p61). My pasillas were moldy, and so were my guajillos, so I used anchos (and now need to get more of them all). The two of us ate the whole recipe, meant of four. Tasty stuff. Forgot to prep the avocado, which I'd saved, and forgot to serve the Pickled Onions (VegSups, p169) that I'd made up as garnish. Oh well. We ate well anyhow.
Friday/14-Sep-18: Just before I came down to cook dinner, an ex-colleague from Uniface days showed up on the doorstep. He and his wife are camping in the area and used our old blog to find the place. They're thinking of moving to the area.
Dinner started with insalata caprese, with one store-bought tomatoes and several small ones from the potager. This year's tomatoes are all small instead of the 500g monsters we've had in the past. Maybe from the dry spell we had while we were away in June. Then we had Lemon Orzo with Avocado and Herbs (web). I think this recipe is meant as a side dish A double recipe was a nice dinner for two. And a pretty bare salad for after.
Yogurt on overnight.

This week in the kitchen
Monday/16-Oct-17: Came back from Paris today. Scrambled eggs for an evening snack.
Tuesday/17-Oct-17: There was a half recipe of Baked Scallops (CL90, p136) for dinner. Served with some mushroom pasta and gesneden snijbonen, hand-cut, of course. Then some of the wonderful chocolate pavés we brought back from Paris with us.
Wednesday/18-Oct-17: I had lunch with friends today while Ed ate from the freezer. Then we shopped. Nothing further happened in the kitchen.
Thursday/19-Oct-17: Early meal today, a half recipe of Fish Molee (web) made with lieu noir. I emptied my tomatoes to get rid of the seeds. They tasted a bit blah so I added a tablespoon of tomato paste from the freezer to flavor up the broth. Took a bit of time to prep everything, then it goes together lickety split. And it's yummy. (I collected this recipe from an Arizona newspaper in 2008. The article, with a number of "curry" recipes, is no longer there, but can be found here.) More pavés for dessert.
Yogurt on overnight.
Friday/20-Oct-17: Earlyish meal, a half recipe of Sautéed Chicken Cutlets with Porcini Sauce (CI/mar09, web). This was good and relatively quick once the prep is done. Served with Spaetzle (MW@Home, p203; Handybook) and gesneden snijbonen, cut in slightly bigger pieces today. Finished the wonderful Chaudun pavés for dessert.
Saturday/21-Oct-17: We had a delicious Indian meal this evening. There was Ekuri (Parsi)—Scrambled Eggs with Coriander and Ginger (TLInd, p14), which was extra yummy. I made a half recipe (three eggs for two), which was a bit skimpy as a dinner, but would make a wonderful breakfast. As suggested, I served this with sliced tomatoes and Paratha (TLInd, p83), as well as Alu ka Rayta—Yoghurt with Spiced Potatoes (TLInd, p92). The paratha tasted ok, but didn't seem quite right. Later I saw that Madhur Jaffrey says the dough should be soft, and mine was still on the dry side, kneadable but dry, after adding about half of the extra water suggested; that might be the difference. This is fairly easy to make, if full of ghee, so I might try this again. The raita was delicious, definitely do-me-again.
Sunday/22-Oct-17: We went to Mazerolles' old folks dinner today. Nothing happened in the kitchen.

This week in the kitchen
Monday/4-Sep-17: Earlyish meal today. There were Wraps Poulet, Figues, et Roquefort (web, VPG). The photo clearly shows chunks of roquefort, where the recipe clearly says to mash the cheese with crème fraîche. The recipe I have from VPG was for 4; what I found on the web is for two. I made the whole recipe and we ate two wraps each. Tasty and really sufficient for two for dinner. As a side (unneeded), there were polenta points with a topping of zucchini, tomato, and haricots verts from the garden. We were quite stuffed.
Tuesday/5-Sep-17: Working on the harvest from the potager today with stuffed zucchini, sort of following this recipe for Sausage-Stuffed Zucchini Boats (web). The sausage was the last of Hazan's from the freezer. No mozzarella, only Parmesan. Good, but filling. Then a salad. That was all.
Seeded a bunch of tomatoes and started them stewing.
Wednesday/6-Sep-17: Oops, neglected to turn off the fire under the tomatoes. Woke to the smell of burnt tomatoes. Later in the date, I realized the that unburnt bits could be puréed to make a sort of tomato paste. Froze up lots of 2 tablespoon bakjes.
Shopping today.
Dinner was, sort of Catfish Barbecue (CL90, p127). Instead of catsup, I used my burnt tomato paste. No sugar added since the tomatoes are so sweet. Easy and pretty tasty. Served with corn on the cob and trio rice, a better brand than we've had of late. For dessert there were some pretty awful little waffles with a bit of vanilla ice cream and blueberries.
Thursday/7-Sep-17: Dinner was Curried Scallop-Apple Salad (web), which was quite good in spite for my messing up a bit. To make the dressing I read apple cider vinegar, so used that, then got to where some cider vinegar was added and realized it wanted apple cider. I added a bit of honey to take the sour off. I also added a bit of apple cider (and finished the bottle this evening), which is an alcoholic drink rather than fancy apple juice.) Anyhow it was good.
Yogurt on overnight.
Friday/8-Sep-17: A good-bye lunch with a friend today. Nothing happened in the kitchen.
Saturday/9-Sep-17: Thought I'd get back to the tomatoes today, but didn't.
Dinner was Roasted Red Bell Pepper Sauce (web). The recipe is supposed to be served over spiralized zukes; I cut strips off mine. We used only about half of the sauce; I froze the rest to serve over real pasta. Edible, but not really a recipe to do again. Ice cream for dessert.
Sunday/10-Sep-17: Yogurt on overday.
Ed asked for roast chicken, so that's what we had today. Spatchcocked and rubbed with Penzey's Quebec Beef Spice (which it suggests for chicken). Pretty good, if a trifle spicy. And an old favorite Dusoulier's Perfect Roasted Potatoes (web) and steamed broccoli topped with garlic slices and red pepper flakes stewed in olive oil. We were full.

This week in the kitchen
Monday/5-Jun-17: Change of plan today, since I forgot to defrost the lamb yesterday and will have that tomorrow. Ate from the freezer today instead, some yummy carrot soup. That was about it in the kitchen.
Tuesday/6-Jun-17: Dinner was Spicy Cumin Lamb Skewers (Yang Rou Chuan) (web). I didn't take the meat off the chops, but used the spice mix as a rub and cooked them under the broiler. Extra delicious. We probably ate three people's worth of meat between us. This rub would probably be good on other meats. I didn't use the oil and Shaoxing wine. Accompanied by plain rice and a half-dose of Hot and Spicy Wrinkled Beans (Chinatown, p106), which we've enjoyed before. No dessert necessary. Ed thought it would be nice to finish the bottle of wine we started. I'm a bit tipsy.
Yogurt on overnight.
Wednesday/7-Jun-17: Shopping today.
Dinner was Warm & Spicy Fish Salad (PatSalads, p95), which I've made before and is still good. I used rocket/arugula/roquette instead of spinach for the salad, and probably more than they intended. For dessert I made some raspberry ice cream. Raspberries from the yard. Vanilla ice cream made with with part mascarpone cream and one part cream cream. Yummy stuff.
Thursday/8-Jun-17: With my French teacher's help, I finally managed to get our new dishwasher ordered. It will be more than a week till it arrives, but at least that's in progress.
Dinner was Rhubarb Khoresh (Roden, p360), a kind of beef stew, with rhubarb from the garden (maybe the last for this year). The stew was one of those glad-I-made-it-don't-have-to-do-it-again things. It's strange that the garden rhubarb is almost gone, but I still haven't seen it in the store. Served with plain rice, Beet Salad (Roden, p68), and Michoteta—Cream Creese and Cucumber Salad (Roden, p65). I've made both of the salads before. Both are good, but the one with feta and cuke really scratches my itch. Then some of the raspberry ice cream.
Friday/9-Jun-17: Found traces of another kitchen mouse, another one that especially likes cantuccini. Sigh.
Dinner was Chiles Rellenos Casserole (CL90, p147). It's the first time I've made this in quite a while. Used a big can of poblanos. Quite yummy. Then a salad. Then we finished off the raspberry ice cream. Yum.
Yogurt on overnight.
Saturday/10-Jun-17: Early meal today, a half recipe of Bang Bang Shrimp (web). Pretty good stuff, and fast and easy. I substituted smoked paprika for regular, which was a mistake. Served with a big salad.
Sunday/11-Jun-17: Mouse was in the trap this morning. Ed dropped him off (possibly too close to the house) on his way to singing this afternoon, so we had a fast dinner from the freezer. Mongolian Beef, served over rice with a side of broccoli. Okay and filling.

This week in the kitchen
Monday/13-Jan-14: A busy day out and about today. Bought some lamps that may be our over-the-sink lamps, although not 100% sure yet. Not what we had in mind, but maybe they work. Visited Géant to get some pasta, not very successful in that area. Looks like they're cutting back selection. They used to have a huge produce section, with lots of "exotic" things and a large selection of lettuces and herbs and such with misters to keep them cool and moist. That's all gone. Produce selection down to ordinary, Too bad.
Dinner was Broccoli Mac and Cheese (web; cookbooker). Good stuff it was too. Except it was meant as a side dish, since two of us easily ate what should have been for four. A funny Cooking Light job; they want you to use low-fat cheese (yuck), then add bacon and butter. Huh?
Tuesday/14-Jan-14: Yogurt on overday. Turned off somewhat before the time set.
Having some brussels sprouts left, I found a recipe for Tortellini met Spruitjes (Allerhande, web) and manipulated it to suit what needed to be used up, mostly the magret séché I bought at a marché de noël and some mushroom ravioli from the freezer. Pretty good it was, although Ed thought the duck was too dry (well, yes). Then a big salad. Finished off with mini magnums.
Wednesday/15-Jan-14: Shopping today.
Dinner was Hoisin-Glazed Salmon Burgers with Pickled Cucumber (CL jun/12; web). Did this without the burger bits, just served all (two patties) per person; Ed wanted more. Very good. Bet it would work fine with canned salmon too, so you didn't have to chop up salmon fillet. Served with Mama's Garlic Coleslaw (Handybook, MC).
Thursday/16-Jan-14: Lunch out today, prior to going to a concert in Limoges this evening. Not much happened in the kitchen today.
Friday/17-Jan-14: Crockpot dinner tonight, Chipotle Lentil Soup (SWCrock*, p24), which filled my old crockpot very full. The lentils didn't quite get done, so I simmered it for a bit on the stove. Have lots left, some for lunch and more in the freezer for another dinner. Made Cayenne Cornbread (BigGerman, p182) as a go-with, and ate most of it.
Saturday/18-Jan-14: Yogurt on overday. Timer definitely flakey.
Lamps over the sink installed. Much brighter now. Not 100% sure about them yet.
Didn't feel like roasting the chicken I've got thawed; instead made Chiles Rellenos Casserole (CL90, p147). Used a big can of poblanos and a 250g package of mozzarella; add a teaspoon of chile powder to the batter. Pretty good for fairly easy. Made a salad of tomatoes, avocado, shallot and other stuff. We split a Magnum classic for dessert.
Sunday/19-Jan-14: Dinner was Spiced-Rubbed Lemon Chicken (web); it was pretty good. I used 1 teaspoon for peppercorns (instead of 1/4) and spatchcocked the chickie so it would cook faster. Put in the pan on top of some chunked potatoes, carrots, and parsnips. These weren't done when the chicken was, so I cooked them in a pot while the chickie rested. For a salad, I roasted the rest of the brussels sprouts and tossed with a lemon vinaigrette and some shredded lemon peel. All very good.

This week in the kitchen
Monday/22-Apr-13: Dinner was Spinach, Mushroom, and Feta Crustless Quiche (web), a recipe I picked up from who knows where fairly recently. Good it was. Followed by a salad and a dog walk.
Tuesday/23-Apr-13: Last week Ed said he'd like to demolish a bird for dinner. So tonight there was a half dose (one bird) of Roasted Guinea Hens with Whole-Grain Mustard and Herbs (web). This include potatoes, shallots, and garlic roasted along with the bird and was pretty good; indeed, Ed did a good job of demolishing. Served with the last bit of broccoli, steamed then sautéed with some mushroom and garlic. Good stuff.
Wednesday/24-Apr-13: Shopping today.
Dinner was a half dose of Fast Fish Fry (web), really simple, not bad. Fish coated with mayo and rolled in crushed pretzels mixed with Old Bay, then sautéed. Any coating could be used, and maybe cooked in the oven or under the grill. Served with a small dose of Mama's Garlic Coleslaw (MC) and Easy Hush Puppies (CL90, p58; MC). Some little store-bought rice puddings ("like grandma made") for dessert.
Yogurt on overnight.
Thursday/25-Apr-13: Off to a quiz tonight. Nothing happening in the kitchen.
Friday/26-Apr-13: IHCC time again. With the yummy stew, I served Spicy Cucumber Wedges (MJ1, p172)—which I make so often, it probably ought to go in my Handy Book—and a pair of storebought naan.. And double-chocolate mini-magnums for dessert.
Saturday/27-Apr-13: Dinner was Slow-Cooker Red Curry Pulled-Pork Sandwiches (web; cookbooker). Easy and yummy.
Sunday/28-Apr-13: Yogurt on overday,
Dinner was Sweet and Spicy Vegetable Pasta (MC), a moldy-oldy recipe. Still good. Lots of veggies (broccoli, red bell pepper, carrots, onion, garlic) in a sauce of yogurt, ricotta, sour cream, coarse mustard with a dab of honey.

This week in the kitchen
Monday/14-Feb-11: Hmm ... next thing up on the freezer list (oldest, to be used soon) is two small containers of spicy apricot chutney, a recipe from CLmag. Now, what I remember is that we didn't especially like this and spicy, it wasn't. Dilemma: should I try to salvage these or just toss them?
Valentine's day lunch at Montemboeuf's Cafe de la Mairie today. No need for further food today!
Tuesday/15-Feb-11: Yogurt on overday. No one wanted to go to the boulanger, so I made Bran Bread (BMB, p44), a nice dense bread. Early in the day, I did the chop-chop for Squash and Corn Chowder (Soups4Seas, p34) and we had that for dinner. Not bad.
Wednesday/16-Feb-11: Finished the travelogue part of Auberge last night. On to the recipes now. Today's post at Gherkins and Tomatoes was about this book. How about that for a bit of serendipity?
Dinner was Chiles Rellenos Casserole (CL90, p147), a TNT recipe I haven't made in a long time. Recently some recipes billed as chiles rellenos casseroles were shared on EAT-L, but they included chopped chiles rather than whole stuffed ones. That made me think of this oldie. Not bad. I make it with two of those little cans of whole chilies, which usually contain three chilies. This time one of the cans had only two chilies, and I can't say either was especially big. We ate half of the casserole with a big salad. Neither of us especially hungry, so no dessert.
Thursday/17-Feb-11: Shopping today. Avoided most impulse purchases.
Before dinner, I baked some of the finger-food "packets" that I got for new year's eve, but we didn't eat. They were surprisingly good, and all the flavors were tasty. Dinner was Spaghetti all'Amatriciana with Eggplant (MedHot, p77). This was rather similar to Cooking Italy's recent-ish Eggplant Sauce with Tomato and Red Chili Pepper. We might have liked tonight's better, since it was less oily. The eggplant was cut in cubes, salted, drained, then tossed with flour before frying, which gave it a nice crisper outer surface. Followed by a salad, then by some rice gelato.
Friday/18-Feb-11: A day in the kitchen.
Saturday/19-Feb-11: Leftover chile relleno casserole for dinner, followed by a big salad. Forgot to take the rice gelato out of the freezer beforehand, so we had some cookies for dessert, kind of hazelnut sandies. Tiny cookies, and we ended up eating the whole box. Oink, oink.
Sunday/20-Feb-11: Finished off the jar of fig jam at breakfast, so tomorrow we'll see how the apple-kiwi butter worked.
Dinner was Zucchini Pancakes (Q&EVeg, p220), an old favorite. When I was considering exactly what to do for this, I realized that many zucchini pancake recipes are really pancakes with some zucchini thrown in, while this recipe is zucchini. Since I'm trying to use up some, that's what I chose. This time the bread crumbs I got from the freezer still had some biggish bits in them; those turned out really nice and chewy. For dessert we finished off the rice gelato.

Friday/18-Feb-11: A day in the kitchen.
- Yogurt on overday.
- Made some apple-kiwi butter. How will that be, I wonder?
- For our midday meal, we had Lamb Shanks with Mustard and Mash (Diaries, p44). (It's a year project to read through Diaries following through the year.) I cooked the shanks in the oven longer and slower than asked, like the Cajun-spiced shanks I did last July. For a starter there was Zucchini and Feta Cheese Salad (WorldVeg, p648), which we've enjoyed before.
- Made 13 meringue cups (pavlovas, I think they can be called), following recipe in CL88. We had a couple as a belated dessert with some raspberries. The cups didn't work as well as the last time I did them; they're remarkably similar to marshmallows. Hoping the freezer will perk them up.
- Made a double dose of pâte brisée (Tenth, p256) for the freezer.
- Used the rest of a jar of roasted red peppers to make some faux pizza sauce for the freezer.
- Chopped a red chili really fine and macerated this is a bit of rice vinegar. Then I stirred it into one of the containers of not-so-Spicy Apricot Chutney. If it perks up, we'll use it; if not, they both get tossed.
