A hockey field in Jharkhand. A classroom in Assam. A hillside spring in Tripura. There is no obvious connection between them, except the one that is easy to miss. In each case, the person or community on the other end wasn't in a position to navigate a system, find a programme, or travel somewhere to ask for support. They did not even know how to reach for help, till help reached out to them first. Addressing the alumni of IIM Bangalore at IIMBue 2026, their flagship leadership conclave, Mr. Noel Tata, Chairman, Tata Trusts, emphasised that businesses must serve society and not merely pursue wealth.  He reaffirmed the founders’ guiding message: "Do what India needs." The true measure of an idea is the value it creates long after those who conceived it are gone. That conviction has shaped the Tata Trusts' approach to philanthropy for more than a century. Speaking on 'From Influence to Impact: Shaping Society for Tomorrow' at the IIM Bangalore Alumni Association, Mr. Siddharth Sharma, CEO, Tata Trusts, reflected on philanthropy's evolving role, from supporting programmes to strengthening systems, building institutions, and bringing together governments, academia, industry and communities to address shared challenges. Drawing on the Trusts' work across education, healthcare, cancer care, nutrition, water security, livelihoods, and climate resilience, he spoke about the importance of investing in solutions that are collaborative, scalable, and designed to endure. He also reflected on the Trusts' long-standing commitment to institution-building, from pioneering institutions in scientific and social research to its recent commitment to IIM Bangalore's School of Undergraduate Studies, as a way of creating knowledge, building capability and expanding opportunities across generations. For the Tata Trusts, the future of philanthropy lies not only in addressing today's challenges, but in building the institutions and capabilities that will serve future generations. This week's Drawing's On The Wall is about what happens when the gesture of conservation becomes the goal. Tree plantation drives are announced with fanfare, photographed with care, and counted with precision from the number of saplings planted, certificates issued, and targets met. What is harder to count, and easier to ignore, is the forest that was already standing before the drive began. A sapling planted today will take decades to become what a cleared forest already was. The carbon dioxide it absorbs, the biodiversity it holds, the communities it sustains are simply not recoverable at the pace of deforestation. The hope is that environmental action grows beyond the gestures to include the hard, unglamorous work of protecting what exists before celebrating what's been planted to replace it. A sapling planted is an investment, whereas a forest is a legacy. And the most meaningful environmental commitments are the ones that don’t settle for substitutes, but work on complementary commitments. #DrawingsOnTheWall #TataTrusts

On his 122nd birth anniversary, the Tata Trusts remember Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata for his enduring belief that right opportunities change a society's trajectory. His conviction enabled the founding of institutions that continue to define India's scientific and social landscape, like the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, and the Tata Memorial Hospital, among many others. That same principle continues to guide the Trusts today, building capability and enabling access. As India's older population continues to grow, the focus is shifting from adding years to ensuring those years are lived with dignity, purpose and connection. Preparing for an ageing population goes beyond policy and healthcare. It means building communities where older adults continue to actively contribute and participate in everyday life. As noted by Srinivas HSD, Head, Health Initiatives, Tata Trusts, "The challenge is not the absence of a hospital or a government scheme. It is the absence of someone to accompany an elderly person to a health facility, remind them to take medication or simply check whether they have eaten." Every handloom holds a history that stretches far longer than the fabric itself. At Bharat Tex 2026, Antaran-Transforming Crafts, an initiative of the Tata Trusts, brought together seven clusters, a curated showcase of India's living craft traditions, spanning hand-spun Tussar silk and single weft ikat from Odisha, loin loom weaving from Nagaland, extra weft eri silk, silk brocades from Assam, and hand painted textiles from Srikalahasti and Jamdani cottons and silks from venkatagiri, Andhra Pradesh.
