India may not need to choose between renewable energy and reliable power. A new Ember analysis suggests that solar combined with battery storage could economically meet up to 90% of India’s electricity demand. Across India’s 10 largest electricity-consuming states, the modelled share ranges from 83% to 92%. The reason is simple: storage changes what solar can do. During the day, solar panels generate electricity. Batteries can store excess generation and release it when demand rises in the evening or after sunset. However, India’s monsoon highlights an important limitation. Batteries can shift energy across hours, but prolonged periods of weak sunlight can put pressure on stored energy. The Ember analysis therefore points toward the need for a broader, flexible energy system that combines solar, storage and complementary sources such as wind and hydro. The modelling estimates that reaching the 90% level would require around 930 GW of solar capacity and 2,560 GWh of battery storage. The bigger takeaway? India’s clean-energy transition is moving beyond simply installing more solar panels. The next opportunity lies in making renewable electricity reliable, flexible and available when demand requires it.
