What if your engineers only had to think about producing an event and executing when one comes in? That's the reality at Extend, the AI-native commerce platform unifying delivery, returns, exchanges, and warranty claims. In this episode of Life Is But A Stream, Jonathan Kropp joins Joseph Morais to share how Extend built a 100% serverless platform with Apache Kafka® on Confluent Cloud as its central nervous system. The results? ↪ An immutable, replayable event log tracking fraud signals ↪ Schema enforcement that stabilized services across the platform ↪ Technology spend traceable to every revenue-generating event This is what making great bets on your data foundation looks like.

#IBMPartner I’ve lost count of how many AI pilots I’ve watched stall the same way. Then everyone is quick to blame the model while no one audits what actually happening underneath. That’s where Confluent, an IBM company comes in. It's a pattern we keep seeing: the pilot failed because the data feeding it is stale and unreliable, and the infrastructure moving that data was only held together by a handful of your most vital engineers. That infrastructure is usually Kafka. And "free" open-source Kafka has a real price tag: ✔️ Engineering time spent just keeping clusters alive ✔️ Cloud spend finance can't explain ✔️ Governance gaps you discover after the audit This is exactly the problem Confluent was built to solve. It was founded by the original creators of Kafka — and now it turns Kafka into one complete, fully managed, governed-by-default platform. In this video, I cover: ↳ Why data infrastructure stalls pilots in production ↳ What self-managed Kafka is actually costing you ↳ How Confluent automates the migration off it — offsets, ACLs, and consumer groups intact, with zero downtime If your AI roadmap is stuck behind infrastructure you have to babysit, Confluent is the upgrade path a CIO can actually stand behind. 🎁 30-day Confluent free trial + $400 in credits → https://bit.ly/4pUCCok

Business leaders almost always know exactly what they want. It’s usually an increment on something they already offer. They’re really just talking about customers. Deliveries. Shipments. Payments. Accounts, Stores, Policies. The verbs and nouns of the business. The funny thing is, as far as the business side of the house is concerned, these asks are not complicated at all. And yet they end up being incredibly complicated to deliver, and to deliver well, because all of those nouns and verbs are locked in a multitude of systems. I’ve seen this play out at company after company. One global bank shared an architecture diagram with me for a single subsidiary. Just North America. For my own interest, I counted the boxes. Over 600. You can imagine why any project there was thought of in years, and hundreds of people. Anything new has to be wired to all of it. Here’s the mindset shift: the systems aren’t the key asset. The data is. And more than that, the ability to work with it. To update it. Evolve it. Improve it. To power business processes with it. That’s where new value gets created. That’s what competitive advantage actually is.

  • Managing Flink SQL operations, monitoring, KRaft migrations, and data governance in separate workflows adds a lot of friction for platform teams. Confluent Platform 8.3 changes that. Built on Apache Kafka 4.3, this release brings these capabilities into Confluent Platform, so you can scale data in motion with complete control. Use an agent-ready MCP server for Apache Flink, build richer Flink SQL applications without leaving the SQL workflow, monitor KStreams applications and clients, and simplify KRaft migrations and governance across your estate. • Last week, we teamed up with Judo Bank for a full-day, in-person Data Streaming Engineer Certification Day. Teams came together to collaborate, swap ideas, and see how real-time data will fuel Judo’s future. In just a few hours, attendees went from the fundamentals all the way to earning their official certifications. Thank you to everyone who joined us, and a special shoutout to Chris Thorburn, James Gollan, and Rohan Walia for leading an incredible workshop!
