Hi Carolus,
The music in these 6 quartets is not by Paisiello. In 1789 the quartets were published under the false name Paisiello by J.J. Hummel, in the nineties of the 18th century they were printed again by Gunter and Böhme, this time additionally with the freely invented opus number 23. Otherwise there are no opus numbers by Paisiello. Works by the famous composer sold well and the forgery was not discovered for a long time. There are even at least three modern new editions of the quartets and a number of CD recordings under the Paisiello name. RISM also lists the quartets under Paisiello.
Only the authoritative editor of a catalog of Paisiello's works, Michael F. Robinson, places the quartets among the doubtful works. (RobW E.06 - 11).
However, except for minimal differences, one can assign the music to the following composers and their works:
Quartet 1 + Quartet 2 = Quartet for oboe, violin, viola and cello ReiF 7.43 by Joseph Fiala.
Quartet 3 + Quartet 5 = Quartet for oboe, violin, viola and cello ReiF 7.42 by Joseph Fiala
Quartet 4 = movements 2 and 3 of the quartet for flute, 2 violas and cello by Johannes Sperger (RISM 240004755)
Only the author of the 6th (single movement!) quartet is unknown. The oboe quartets were transposed one tone up. Claus Reinländer (in his Fiala Werkverzeichnis) and Peter Wuttke (in his first edition of ReiF 7.43) draw attention to these connections. The stylistic assignment is clear, at least in the case of Fiala; the work by Sperger exists as an autograph.
What changes should we make in IMSLP?
Best Greetings, Notenschreiber
