How Did the Fandom Snowflake Challenge Go?

It went all right, I'm always happy to have a go. Community spaces like these are really important these days.

Challenge #14

In your own space, create a promo and/or rec list for someone new to a fandom. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it and include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

The Saga of the Exiles by Julian May is a SFF book series about life in the 22nd century. Aliens contacted us and we're now part of their galactic alliance. Everything is fairly stable, but for those who don't fit in, there's a one-way time gate in France that takes you back six million years to prehistoric France.

This attracts misfits, petty criminals and others who don't fit in modern life, who want something simpler. The only thing is... no one knows exactly what they'll find when they go back to the past.

The books follow a group of eight people who are going through the time gate because they're running towards or away from something.

Disclaimer: This series was written in the '80's, so some things have dated badly. But some of the characters might stay rent-free in your heads for quite a while!

The series was almost made into a movie or TV series and there was an animated promotional trailer made (spoilers if you haven't read the books).

Challenge #13

TALK ABOUT A COMMUNITY SPACE YOU LIKE. It doesn’t need to be your favorite, or the one where you spend the most time (although it certainly can be). Maybe it’s even one that you’ve barely visited. But talk about that space and how it helps support fannish community.

I like the DW community fandomweekly because it celebrates writing and fandom - it has a weekly challenge that you write fan fiction / original fiction for. There's no pressure and at the end of each one you get to vote on your favourite story. If you like, you can post it on A03 in the community set up for it.

Challenge #12

Make an appreciation post to those who enhance your fandom life. Appreciate them in bullet points, prose, poetry, a moodboard, a song... whatever moves you!

I write fanfiction on A03 and I appreciate all those who have written nice comments as well as just giving kudos to my stories. It really makes my day if I receive one.

Challenge #10: Big Mood (Board)

CHOOSE SOMETHING YOU LOVE AND CREATE A MINI MOOD COLLECTION OF THREE (or more) ITEMS THAT EVOKE YOUR FEELINGS ABOUT IT. You don’t have to limit yourself to visual media, or collect the items into a special format like a square (though you can if you’d like).

I have a mood board I did for Elizabeth Orme from the Saga of the Exiles by Julian May.

A widowed children's teacher from a snowy planet, the last thing she wants is being thought of as The Chosen One Who Will Fix Everything.

Challenge #9

Talk about your favorite tropes in media or transformative works. (Feel free to substitute in theme/motif/cliche if "trope" doesn't resonate with you.)

1. Group of misfits saving the world - they might not all like or trust each other, but on the plus side they can be unpredictable enough that the villain doesn't know what they'll do next either.

2. Enemies forced to work together - the angst! Maybe there's the potential they'll stop being enemies and become an unstoppable power couple instead.

3. Hurt / comfort - enough said.

4. Rags to riches - especially when there's a steep learning curve to go with the riches (which don't come that easily).

5. Reluctant Chosen One  - 'what do you mean I have to save the world? I'm a mess!'

Challenge #8

Talk about your creative process.

Well, I'm a landscape artist and my process is that I take a photo with my phone and then get a printout of that. Then I prepare a canvas and paint using the photo as a guide. Sometimes I change some details; any building in a photo often gets painted purple. No, I'm not quite sure why either.

I know some art experts say if you don't actually paint landscapes outside (en plein), it doesn't actually count. Well, my city can have four seasons in one day, so I'd rather paint my way, thanks.

Challenge #7

LIST THREE (or more) THINGS YOU LIKE ABOUT YOURSELF. They don’t have to be your favorite things, just things that you think are good. Feel free to expand as much or as little as you want.

1. I like being able to fix things when possible. I make beaded jewellery so I have the tools to fix other peoples jewellery - I restring bracelets, replace the clasp on someones necklace if it's broken, etc.

2. I'm a writer, it's a comfort if I'm feeling stressed.

3. I can bake; I can make a cake from scratch and you can eat it (don't look at the icing too closely though, sometimes that can be tricky to make).

Challenge #4: Rec The Contents Of Your Last Page

Any website that you like, be it fanfiction, art, social media, or something a bit more eccentric!

I like visiting a fantasy book review blog here - https://www.fantasybookcafe.com/   They review the latest books and there's a month each year where female authors are interviewed.

Challenge #3

Write a love letter to fandom. It might be to fandom in general, to a particular fandom, favourite character, anything at all.

I was an outsider at school, never really belonged. But when I found fandom, I could be part of a community. It gave me a reason to start writing (hello, fan fiction) and a reason to do art (hello, fan art). I made friends through fandom, some of whom I've known for years now.

When one of my old schools advertised a school reunion recently, I flinched in horror and stayed away.

I would rather go to a sci-fi convention, even if I didn't know anyone there. But I would definitely have more fun.

Challenge #2: Pets of Fandom

Loosely defined! Post about your pets, pets from your canon, anything you want!

When I was a kid, I had a pet rabbit that lived in a hutch outside. Later on, I had budgies and goldfish as pets.

Mum and I were allergic to cats, so sadly I've never had any.

I like cats in fandom though - there's Data's cat Spot in ST:TNG and Uncle Rogi has Maine Coon cats in the Galactic Milieu book series by Julian May.

Hornets

There are hornets here now in New Zealand. 😑 This isn't good for our bees and horticulture.

Here's how to make a home-made trap:

Best bit I've seen today on the website notalwaysright.com

Miss Patty slowly blinks, sips her iced tea, and gives the kind of smile you usually see before a tornado drops.

Storms

imhilien: Lady Riding (Lady Riding)

So the night before as I was nearly falling asleep, there was a loud thunderstorm that went on for about an hour. It felt like the gods were playing ten-pin bowling above my neighbourhood. 😱

It was probably a bit worse than usual because we've had ex-tropical cyclone Tam roaming over the North Island in the last few days. There's been rain and occasional howling winds but luckily the power didn't go off like it did further north.

No I don't like thunderstorms, how did you guess this.

Last Friday was the lunar eclipse. It was too cloudy to see it start, but the clouds cleared and the full moon looked a smoky, reddish colour.

Then I saw a bright line at the bottom (like a thin white smile) that slowly spread upwards until the moon was its white colour again.

Challenge #9

In your own space, create a fanwork.

I wrote a short fan fiction story 'Double Trouble' for the sci-fi romance 'Games of Command' by Linnea Sinclair.

Snowflake Challenge 10: Fandom Firsts

In your own space, talk about one of your fandom firsts.

When I was a teenager, there was no internet and I had never read fan fiction written by others. I don't think I knew it even existed - I had no way of finding out. I joined a science fiction club and it was great meeting fellow fans.

One day, I saw someone at the club with a publication that was a collection of Phantom of the Opera fan fiction - my mind was blown. Not that it existed, but that someone had gone to the trouble of painstakingly putting it together and physically printing it out.

That was a fandom first I remember to this day.

Challenge #8

In your own space, write a promo, manifesto or primer for a beloved character, relationship or fandom.

Title: Children of the Dog Star (1980's TV series)

Approx length: Six episodes

Where to find it: Youtube

What is it, in summary?: New Zealand YA sci-fi about three pre-teens on holiday in the countryside. They're bored, but soon realise there's something alien nearby in the swamp.

What do you love about it?: I like how the characters in different ways slowly realise something odd is going on. Gretchen, the main character, is determined to get to the bottom of things, no matter what.
